We have been living in Nanaimo for the past 7 yrs and love all the Island has to offer. We especially enjoy the wonderful moderate climate, and the wide variety of healthy outdoor activities available at our doorstep.
Having travelled extensively in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, we’ve always enjoyed the value and flexibility of staying in self contained suites. Our enjoyable travelling experiences set us on this path to offer this distinct, one of a kind accommodation.
Norma is a retired Operating room Registered Nurse. Robert has been a fine furniture designer & maker for nearly 40 years. His working studio & gallery is on the property so he is always available for visits from our guests. He was instrumental in organizing the popular Hammond Bay Open Studio Tour, featuring fabulous local artists working in various mediums. A number of these talented artists exhibit in the Artful Suite, which lends to the richness of the decor.
So our intent was not only to offer a unique, comfortable surroundings for travellers but also a venue for local artists to showcase their work.
Norma or Robert Waddell purchased this apartment in 2007
Norma has family that have resided in Nanaimo for years. We had been coming to Vancouver Island to visit for many years, and loved what the island had to offer. An unexpected opportunity arose that allowed us to move here 7 yrs ago. We have never looked back and and enjoyed every moment here.
This is a mature property 1/3 acre in size, offering a lot of privacy to the home and suite that occupy it. We enjoy the location ,which is nestled amongst some of the very best seaside and land locked parks this area has to offer. We truly enjoy regular casual strolls to Piper Lagoon park to enjoy the smell of salt air, the pounding of the waves and screeches of the eagles over head.
Nice place run by nice people...who could ask for anything more
Lower level suite with convenient parking. Main drag for access.
Norma and Bob Waddell's 'Artful Suite' is just that. It is a wonderful and spacious accommodation, with every comfort and convenience you could imagine or wish for. There was absolutely nothing wanting, including a well-stocked kitchen looking out over a garden (with complimentary cream, coffee and muesli), a cozy bedroom and its double bed, and a delightful living area with gorgeous West Coast art adorning the walls (my favorite was a pair of hummingbirds in flight) and beautifully worked wooden furniture. A treat for the eye as well as a lovely respite from the workaday world.
A former resident of Nanaimo and an avid birder, I chose the suite due to it proximity to Pipers Lagoon, which is a short stroll away. And this did not disappoint. With bracing mid-winter winds off the sea, it brought joy to my heart, as I saw such a variety of things that will soon be gone once spring sets in. A variety of sea ducks - harlequins, buffleheads, red-breasted mergansers and the occasional grebe or loon. There are also oystercatchers, sandpipers, and a resident eagle or two. A very large sea lion was roving around the shores on any day I chose to come there. After a leisurely amble along the spit (enclosing the lagoon and opening to the sea on its southern side), a hill of rocks forms a barrier to a small island. If you have the ambition (and shoes) to clamber over the basalt, you'll reach an island which harbours rare Garry Oak habitat. It is a treasure to which I return, time and time again, and made especially wonderful by topping off each hike with a warm cup of tea in the Waddell's inviting suite.
And, of course, all of this is a mere 10 to 15 minutes away from any Nanaimo destination - the downtown, nearby shopping malls, other nature spots and in the summer, any number of beaches and lakesides. I am so grateful to Norma and Bobb for all their thought and care which made for a truly a memorable stay that I hope to reprise.
The suite is even better than advertised. Norma has thought of every thing including comfortable bath robes and slippers, there was even some rain gear though we didn't need it. It is in a great location, an easy drive to amenities and lots of beach and water activities. Norma recommended the Mahle restaurant for our anniversary dinner. It was a bit of a drive but was definitely worth it as it was excellent. We would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to friends. Sandy and Bruce, Edmonton, AB
The downstairs apartment is cozy with a lot of details. The mouse hole art work at the corner of the wall is very impressive. We really enjoy the garden outside the entrance. Internet wireless signal is excellent. My iPhone has very weak reception due to antenna issue. But I was getting very high data transfer rate. A walk to the nearby beach is relaxing. The owners are a delight to deal with. Overall, we highly recommend this rental.
This was our first stay other than at a hotel, and we lucked-out by spending two weeks at Nanaimo's Artful Suite. We felt pampered being surrounded with original artworks, and greatly enjoyed watching the hummingbirds. A private and comfortable home away from home.
This warm and inviting vacation rental is located in the popular north Nanaimo area. It's with in a 5 min. walk to one of the most beautiful ocean front parks Nanaimo has to offer Pipers Lagoon. With its scenic views across the Salish Sea to the snow capped mountains of the North Shore, Piper Lagoon is a favourite spot for out door activities. Recommendations are available should you want to arrange for kayaking, diving, or bike hires. Also with in a km is Neck Point park which is reputed to be one of the best underwater diving locations and some great birding (eagles and owls). With in a .5 km is Linley Valley park a very large and popular urban park, that offers very scenic views. Take a 13 minute (9 Km) drive to a beautiful harbour walk, and you'll quickly see why Nanamio is known as the Harbour city.
