Guestbook comments from the manager

The Getaway was everything we needed! Perfect place to relax, enjoy the mountain views and "Getaway". The house is fully furnished and all we needed to bring was our food, drink and personal items. Everything is very well maintained and is in town, so you are close to everything in Banner Elk. The house is on a very quiet street and the paved driveway was a bonus. We even walked into downtown, via the Greenway Trail. Had a great time and will be back very soon.

You need to get away to the Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 stayed here for our last minute vacation. It was perfect in every way. The house was very clean

and had all the little extras needed like spices and coffee, cleaning supplies, plenty of kitchen supplies and very

comfortable bedding and furnishings. We spent each day with a late sleep-in and watching the Olympics. Then

we ventured out and took a mini-adventure between Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson and Linville. We

ate well at the local restaurants and enjoyed driving on the Parkway with stops along the way. This was the first

time our entire family has been together for several years for a break and we will be back soon. We had to stay somewhere else in town the last few days of our stay and we definitely liked the Getaway for the amenities it

offered in comparison to the other place. The rental manager was very accommodating as well and worked with us in every way to make sure we had what we needed. I would highly recommend this place and Banner Elk Mountain Cabins for any vacation plans in the future.

Just what we needed

  • 4 of 5

This is a really good spot, both the house and the town. Easy access to the park, "downtown" area, and main highways getting there. Yes the driveway is very steep and could present a problem in the winter (if there's precipitation) but we were there for 4th of July and while it took once or twice to figure out the backing out, turning around deal, after that it was really no big deal. The only real "concern" I have is that there is no central air. I get it, it's a mountain home and all that but it was a bit warm at times even with windows open and fans running. But I wouldn't let that deter me from staying again or recommending to others. The bedrooms were perfect for what we needed. The view was nice from the deck, though if those trees were just a bit shorter, it'd be even better....but again, not a huge deal. We were looking to just get out of town for a couple of days and escape to somewhere nice and different and we certainly got what we wanted by staying here. And the owner was incredibly accommodating and easy to work with.

Owner's Response: With temps topping out in the mid 80's this summer, we do have an A/C unit in the master bedroom window and one bigger floor unit in the living room. Combined with the ceiling fans......they keep the house nice and cool. Thank you so much for your kind words and you are welcome back anytime!

Perfect Getaway Cabin in the Heart of Banner Elk

  • 5 of 5

The Getaway was the perfect getaway for us. The location was private yet convenient to downtown and we found ourselves enjoying the Greenway trail into town many times. The cabin had every amenity we could of asked for (OK...a hot tub on the deck would have been nice) and we felt so comfortable from the minute we got there. The living room fireplace was amazing and we had it on constantly. The living room was comfortable and large. The kitchen was a bit small for both of us to work in but it was more than adequate. Both bedrooms were lovely (the king sized bed was super comfortable) and there were plenty of bathrooms to pick from. The sheets and towels were plentiful and plush and it was nice to be able to do laundry. The driveway up to the house was something. Super steep and it made the returns from our walks a bit challenging. And we were glad that it didn't snow to have to tackle it in the ice. The internet was great for keeping up with work but it wasn't sufficient to be able to stream movies or television. But the choices on the satellite TV made up for it. We loved The Getaway and will definiteley be back!

Decent spot for a getaway...

  • 3 of 5

The house was on a hill and has some eccentricities. No kitchen vent hood so the house always smelled like what we were cooking. Internet was slower than dial-up but I didn't come to stream movies... Just hoped to get a little work done. DVD/VCR doesn't work, just so you know. Master shower was frustratingly no-volume. Kids' room shower was remodeled and good. Bathroom doors don't lock. Driveway is insanely steep and there is no easy U-turn at the top. DO NOT drive up if there is a hint of a chance for snow. Long walk to car at bottom of hill. if it gets icy, you'll need about 70# of salt. (My 50 didn't quite get it). Don't touch the very old polyethylene rope (think cactus) at the fence if it's slippery. Hope they replace that.

"Average Price per night" shown on VRBO wasn't what we were charged, but we knew that with option to sign.

To the good stuff, heaters work swimmingly! Set them lower than the comfort zone. Beds were comfortable and layout was good. Lots of older movies on DVD and tape. Blankets on the couch. Dresser FULL of video games - we didn't try the hardware in there. Fireplace worked great. Prior guests (maybe owners) left some spices and whatnot - even coffee which we found valuable, and left in-kind. Super-quiet residential neighborhood and a great deck overlooking mountain-top views. Deer.

Owner's Response: This is not very good but it is good to hear so we know what to work on! I can't imagine what is wrong with the DVD since we used it in November. We really want to address the plumbing issue in the spring. We agree that the scratchy rope should probably be replaced and would be happy to add locks to the bathroom doors. I'm afraid there is nothing we can do to fix the kitchen exhaust issue. Also, the Internet was fast enough for our family of 4 to surf the web but we did not do much more than idle surfing. I can check into the speed and see if it can be upgraded, but I do know that our internet here is sometimes slower at times for no random reason. The house is on a hill and I make sure everyone has looked at the photo of the driveway in the listing. I also include in the rental agreement, that 4 wheel drive or tire chains may be needed. This time, all that was needed was to call and we would have had the driveway plowed.

Lives up to its name!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I visited for a long fall weekend and had a wonderful stay! We really enjoyed the convenience The Getaway cabin provided by being close to town (why we initially chose it), but it's tucked away up on a little hill which also provided the privacy to sit outdoors and enjoy the leaves. We found the cabin to be comfortable and immaculately clean, which can some times be hit or miss with cabin rentals. Anyway, it's a nice little place that I certainly wouldn't hesitate to recommend if you're headed to Banner Elk!
