About the property

Private, 2 bedroom, gorgeous gardens, close to everything.

The Secret Garden is a serene retreat nestled in gorgeous gardens in one of the most beautiful and safe neighbourhoods in Vancouver. Ten minutes to UBC or downtown - close to the best of everything Vancouver has to offer!

Our large, bright yet cozy apartment occupies the ground level of a character home. Just outside the separate entrance are a private patio, BBQ hut for guests and the lush back garden.

The carpeted living room has large windows looking onto gardens, a big comfy couch and extra seating, a gas fireplace and flatscreen tv.

There are two bedrooms, both with windows looking onto gardens. The master has a queen bed and the other bedroom a double bed and sleeping nook for kids.

The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, toaster, kettle; everything you need to cook at home. The fridge and stove are both full size.

The dining area also looks onto gardens and has seating for six.

Our luxurious tiled bathroom with walk-in shower, rainhead, and granite counter opens into a private sauna.

The laundry room has a washing machine and dryer, laundry tubs, and cleaning supplies. There are no charges for the use of the washer and dryer.

Our tropical feel back garden features a large stone deck, water feature and landscape lighting. Birds and squirrels visit many times a day and can often be seen drinking at the fountain. The garden is featured annually in the “Dunbar in Bloom” garden tour in May.

The front garden has a delightful little stone patio surrounded by beautiful trees and shrubs.

We are half a block from Dunbar Village in the historic neighbourhood of Dunbar-Southlands. Within two blocks are many restaurants and bars, liquor store, produce and fish markets, Starbucks and other coffee shops, Mac's, drug store, small shops, beauty salons and medical clinic. SaveOnFoods is at 41st and Dunbar. A fresh fruit and vegetable market is two blocks away at Dunbar and 28th.

There is ample free parking in front of the house with no need for permits.

Families with children will enjoy the Dunbar Community Centre, one block away, which has a great playground, tennis courts, fitness centre and picnic area.

The west side beaches are a ten-minute drive or short bus ride down the hill. Also nearby are UBC, the Museum of Anthropology and several public golf courses. A few blocks west is the entrance to Pacific Spirit Park where you can walk for hours in old-growth forest. A 10-minute drive or 25-minute bus ride takes you to downtown Vancouver.

Granville Island, Queen Elizabeth Park, VanDusen Gardens, Commercial Drive, South Granville, Main Street and UBC are some of the attractions you won't want to miss on our side of town.

For families with small children we have a play-and-pack and high chair free of charge.

If you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a quiet, beautiful setting close to the best of everything Vancouver has to offer, we would love to welcome you to The Secret Garden.

About Noo-Noo

My name is Noo-Noo - grandmother, gardener and part-time businesswoman. I live upstairs and am available by phone but not necessarily in 24-hour residence. No dogs, cats, raucous parties or elephants bowling up here! Just let me know if you need anything and I'll be happy to help.

Noo-Noo purchased this apartment in 1985

Why Noo-Noo chose Vancouver

I love Dunbar! I moved here from North Van in 1985. I bought this home for its large treed lot, proximity to the forest and Dunbar Village and most of all I loved the character of the house (it used to be an old mill worker's home and was built in 1924).

What makes this apartment unique

The location is fantastic - everything needed for day to day living is within walking distance. There is a SaveOnFoods 11 blocks away and our new Stongs Supermarket will be opening in winter 2017 only three blocks from the house. There are 11 restaurants/ coffee shops/ diners offering British pub food, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Subway and sushi all within three blocks (and Starbucks!) as well as a liquor store, drug store, and various small shops. There are three parks within a few blocks and a beautiful garden to enjoy no matter what the season.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Awesome shower and sauna I have to say...right in the suite itself...better than any hotel at that price.

Kitchen with everything you could want and an upscale supermarket, Stongs at the end of the block that's open till midnight.

Super quiet, great beds and just a beautiful getaway that's 15 minutes from downtown.

We are staying there whenever we go to Vancouver from now on if at all possible.

Fabulous find!

Noo Noo has done an excellent job of creating a special nest in a lovely neighborhood. The sauna in the bathroom and fireplace ib the living room got quite the workout during our 8 day stay given the cool rainy weather. The bedding was luxurious, the extra sleeping nook in one of the bedrooms was just darling. The neighborhood was conveniently located with many services in easy walking distance. We hated to leave to come home!

Owner's Response: Hi Lori: How nice of you to take the time to write such a great review - much appreciated! It's snowing this morning; so pretty with all the Christmas lights. Glad to hear you liked the sauna and the fireplace, cozy indeed! Just got back last week from visiting my grandaughters in San Diego. They're coming for Christmas so I'm hoping the snow lasts for their visit. I hope to see you again the next time you visit our beautiful city. Noo-Noo

~~~ Perfection in a 'Secret Garden' Stay ~~~
  • 5 of 5
~ WOW ~, what more can a person say about this 'Secret Garden' gem that is tucked into a beautiful neighborhood. We had an amazing time staying in this wonderfully decorated and exquisitely landscaped house. Noo-Noo was a very gracious host and we appreciated all of the small details that she has throughout the property. Thank you so much for the Birthday card for our daughter that she found in 'her' bedroom upon our arrival. The neighbor hood was very safe and secure and parking was not a problem in front of the house. The foliage around Vancouver this time of the year is just indescribable; the colors are so vibrate and the crispness of the fall air was a welcome break from the weather here in Oklahoma. Thank you for offering your beautiful home and allowing us to have a safe and secure place to call 'home' while we visited the Vancouver area. Our only regret was having to leave and not being able to stay longer, but we now have a place to come back to next year.
Owner's Response: Hi Chris - WOW! back to you. Thanks for the fabulous review - it certainly makes all my efforts worthwhile and really made my day. I'm so happy that Stephanie got to see the sets for Once Upon a Time in Steveston, and the Mayor's house to boot! I really do hope you'll come back next year - you were great guests. Maybe for Stephanie's Sweet Sixteen?? Noo-Noo
A perfect secret gem in a very nice neighbourhood
  • 5 of 5
The two bedrooms apartment was perfect, exactly as described, very well maintain, nice pleasant decor. Situated in the ground floor of a beautiful house surrounding by trees and flowers... In a very upscale residential neighbourhood, very safe and plaisant. Three minutes walk from a commercial street with everything we needed, grocery shopping, nice little coffee and all kinds of ethnic and traditional restaurants. Also, right at the corner buses going to downtown and other area of the city. Very convenient... Noo Noo was very helpful and we really did appreciate her welcoming us upon arrival and her beautiful place . Me and my family we felt right at home and hope we will be able to come back!!!
Owner's Response: Hi Valerie So glad to read that you, your daughter at UBC and your son enjoyed your stay at The Secret Garden. When you come back to visit your daughter please stay here if possible - I'd love to see you again. Hopefully it won't be raining so much on your next visit so you can sit outside and enjoy the gardens and the BBQ hut. Noo-Noo
A wonderful retreat
  • 5 of 5
The secret garden as the owner lovingly calls it, was the best vrbo rental I've ever chosen. The community in which the house is was bustling with beautiful homes and near by restaurants and business. I would recommend anyone going to Vancouver rent this beautiful surreal apartment. The owner was most gracious and helpful with information.
A little gem of a holiday home
  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at Noo Noo's beautiful apartment - very clean and comfortable. Noo Noo was very welcoming and helpful and made every effort to ensure that we had everything we needed, particularly as we were travelling with a toddler. We made good use of the BBQ and the sauna was an unusual but nice addition. The gardens are stunning and everything we needed was within walking distance, which was a massive bonus, including a fantastic Chinese restaurant/takeaway (Simons). Vancouver has so much to offer - Whale Watching, Stanley Park, Granville Island to name but a few activities during our trip. We sincerely hope that this wont be our first and last trip to Canada and most importantly to the fabulous Secret Garden. Many thanks
Owner's Response: Hi Emily, Andy and Phoebe: Thanks for the wonderful review. I'm really happy to hear how much you enjoyed your stay here. Simon's Kitchen has always been a favourite of my family; glad you liked it as well. The highlight of your stay was when I finally managed to get a wave out of dear little Phoebe! Hope to see you again next time you come to Canada. Noo-Noo
At home in a Vancouver Neighborhood
  • 5 of 5
Noo-noo's delightful apt is in a real neighborhood and you feel as if it is home away from home. It is as beautiful as the website portrays, and Noo-noo is helpful, supportive, without being intrusive. My sister and I enjoyed our stay immensely in this well-equipped, beautiful space. And the garden space outside is spectacular. I'd stay here again anytime and highly recommend it to my family and friends. The recommendation from Noo-noo for the restaurant in Queen Elizabeth Park was spot-on. Thank you for a wonderful experience in Vancouver.
Owner's Response: Thanks, Esther, I really appreciate your taking the time to write such a great review. I'm so glad I thought of sending you to Seasons in the Park at Queen Elizabeth Park - I also sent guests there in August for their 35th anniversary and they raved about it. Indeed, there is so much more to Vancouver than the downtown core which really isn't Vancouver at all any more! There is so much to see here on the west side and I'm glad you were able to experience the "real" Vancouver. Also was happy you enjoyed your day at our westside beaches, the Museum of Anthropology and UBC. Hope you'll come again sometime, you and your sister were so much fun! Noo-Noo
The Secret Garden is in the historic neighbourhood of Dunbar-Southlands, on a quiet, tree-lined street half a block from Dunbar Village. A 10-minute drive or 20-minute bus ride takes you downtown. The best beaches in Vancouver are just down the hill - Jericho, Spanish Banks, Locarno, and Kitsilano. The University of British Columbia is a 10-minute drive. Also on this side of town are the Museum of Anthropology, VanDusen Gardens, the Planetarium, Science World, and the funky areas of Main Street and Commercial Drive for bars, ethnic restaurants and music. The old fishing village of Steveston is half an hour's drive - great fish and chips and you can buy fresh fish off the boats to cook in our fully equipped kitchen.
Please take note that the one thing our heritage homes in Dunbar have in common is that the ceilings can be a bit lower than usual (although to code). If you are over 6' tall you may not find this property a good fit although many taller gents have stayed here with no complaints. Also the second bedroom has a DOUBLE bed so if you are four adults staying please keep that in mind. The last thing I ever want is unhappy guests!
