Completed in spring of 2013, hummingbird cottage is a charming cottage built for comfort. The ground floor has an open plan room with vaulted ceiling and beautiful venetian glass chandelier. The dining room area has a table that will comfortably seat six adults. The living area has a tv and comfortable slipcovered couch and two arm chairs. There are four large windows to maximise the natural light and provide wonderful cross breezes in the summer. The back door leads out to a patio with cushioned chairs and table for Al Fresco dining and two adirondack s for relaxing. There is an outdoor shower behind the house for showers after your days at the beach. Upstairs there is a loft style bedroom, quaintly tucked into the eaves, that has two twin beds that can also be pushed together to make a king size bed. The kitchen has a small fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker so you can enjoy light meals at home. A grill is also available to use. The marble walk in shower and marble floor bathroom is located next to the master bedroom which has a queen size bed.
Situated in Duxbury, a quiet town at the beginning of cape cod, close to everything but off the beaten track. This historic town has so much to offer, from oysters and lobsters to fresh baked french pastries. The six mile beach is just a few miles away from the cottage and here you can spend a day reaxing on the outer beach, home to endangered plovers and in the winter months, snowy owls.Just 35 miles from Boston you can see all the sites of the city easily in a day trip. There is a commuter train that takes you right to the city from the next town, Kingston. The ski resorts are just two hours drive and many can be reached in a day trip. Vermont and New Hampshire are also within a short drive and Rhode island too. The cottage is a perfect point from which to explore or to relax and enjoy all the local activities. The historic town of Plymouth, where the pilgrims landed is just a few miles away and a trip to Plymouth plantation or a whale watch off Provincetown are fun to do. We will do anything we can to make your stay wonderful and great. There is so much to see that one trip just wont be enough!
We have lived here since the year before our son was born in 2001. We have always dreamed of building a guest cottage and have visitors from all over the world to enjoy our beautiful town. My husband grew up here and I am originally from England.
Ashley MacCallum purchased this cottage in 2000
This is our dream cottage that we designed after years of renting homes all over the world. We designed a clean, comfortable space with a private patio and garden with all the modern conveniences.
This home is bright, decorated with beautiful furniture and decorated tastefully. The grounds have beautiful plantings with many birds and rabbits, chipmunks and occasionally turkeys and deer can be seen.
Had a great stay, was exactly what we were looking for
We stayed for a winter weekend while visiting family in Duxbury and everything could not have been more perfect - from the wine and pasties upon arrival to the bright and sunny interior of the cottage. We will definitely be staying again for any future family trips! Thanks so much!
This cottage is on the owner's property and couldn't be cuter! We squeezed 5 people into the cottage (3 adults, 1 15 year old and a 12 year old) as we were in town for a big celebration and wanted to stay together. There are beds for 4 (2 on the queen bed in the bedroom and 2 in the twin loft beds). We put the 12 year old on the couch with some extra blankets and pillows. She seemed very comfortable. Note that the loft is open to the living area below, and there is one bathroom to share. We found it to be quite spacious and wouldn't hesitate to share this cottage with friends again, but you're not going to have a lot of privacy. The steps to the loft are steep and the loft is somewhat open, so you may not want very young children sleeping there. I, however, did make it up and down the steps with a sprained ankle, so I wouldn't call them treacherous - just something to watch around little people. The cottage itself is extremely well furnished. There is a mini fridge, coffee maker, hot water pot, soap/shampoo, iron -- truly everything you could think to use. There were even cards and games to play as well as a "take a book, leave a book" basket. The towels were fluffy and the bedding quite comfortable. If you were planning to cook for yourself (we ate out), you would need to work around using a hot plate, microwave, and I think BBQ. There is no regular stove or oven. But, honestly, you're on vacation, right? We ate out at two recommended breakfast places - The Blueberry Muffin and Percy's Place and enjoyed them both. The Blueberry Muffin was quite crowded, but they had delicious muffins (go figure!) and HUGE omelets. Percy's Place had a fantastic corned beef hash. The owner stays in great contact with you (more so than I've had with other VRBO experiences) and I get the feeling that she would be extremely helpful if you needed anything - prestocking the fridge with milk and cereal, specific coffee and tea, etc. Truly a great experience.
Although small, the cottage was spotlessly clean, well decorated and appointed. Everything works, ( normally good news) but it does lack a range in the kitchen.
If you need to be close to Duxbury or Plymouth, this cottage far outshines the hotels in the area!
I grew up in Duxbury and wanted to go back and visit to show my husband and 5-month-old son this very special area - and the Hummingbird Cottage could not have been more perfect. It was clean and beautifully decorated - Ashley has an amazing eye for interior design. The beds were comfortable and we always looked forward to going "home" after a day around town and at the beach. Ashley always went out of her way to make sure our stay went well. There was wine in the fridge and French Memories pastries on the counter upon our arrival. She even helped us bring our son to the Duxbury drive-on beach - which will forever be a cherished memory for us. Ashley and her family provided the perfect balance of privacy while also being accommodating when needed. I cannot recommend the cottage and Ashley enough. We will definitely be back. Thank you, Ashley!
We had a great time at the cottage. It is so cute and cozy. Everything we needed was there including beach towels, beach chairs, washer and dryer, etc. Loved the ping pong table in the basement also and enjoying the nice evenings in the private yard area. Beds were so comfortable and the bedding was beatuiful. Definitely will be back next time we are in Duxbury.
Beautiful historic town with six mile beach. Historic homes of some of the first pilgrim settlers and an art museum, state parks and historical beaches to visit.
