Overview

Guanacaste Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Costa Rica is a paradise for lovers of wildlife, adventure, blue skies, ocean waves lapping sandy shores and rivers winding through lush forests. It's a slower pace with a laid-back rhythm.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, are adventurous, self-sufficient, and in good condition [NOT appropriate for VERY small children]--- read on. If you're looking for 5 star pampering, it's not the place for you, [ a reviewer recently, aptly, described it, as '5-star camping'! ].

The treehouses are very basic but have available WiFi, and nice, small kitchens; besides good beds and full bathrooms with heated water.

If you want adventure, you can keep busy for days.

Click on 'Photos and More Information' for Tad's [Popo's] web site and additional pictures at the bottom of this listing-------------------------------

There are two 'Treehouses' built of local woods and tree trunks, with upper level bedrooms and porches and lower level bathrooms and kitchens, with tables and chairs. These are in a compound close to the main house in the midst of lush planting [the lushest time is after the "green season" kicks in [June until Dec.] The BEAUTIFUL beach is just about four hundred yards down the road. All the windows are screened but you will rarely see any flying insects, [apparently, a few people are bothered by them, however, so bring bug spray to be safe.]

Each treehouse sleeps four in one bedroom with an overhead fan, a bedside reading lamp, a double bed plus twin bunks, plus a private bath with heated water. There is a new, small kitchen in each.

Dec. through April is dry. The nights are in the 60's to 70's and days in the 80's to 90's. The nights are usually cool enough to use a light blanket The 'green' months--later in the summer until Nov., are very lush with more chance of rain showers and are more humid. November to April is about 10 or so degrees cooler than later in the year.

In SEASON, [May, June, July] the howler monkeys arrive and the toucans and humming birds come to feast on the papayas left for them. There are also roosters and dogs in the distance. It's a different world, with more natural sounds than we are used to. Most people love it, but that may not appeal to you.

Tad [ Popo ], Susie and the children [10, 19, 21, 23, and 28 yrs.old] are totally bilingual and love to interact with guests. Although the older ones are now living on their own, they, usually are available to guide and advise you about everything there is to do, give surfing lessons, kayak trips, anything you would like. JUST INQUIRE OF SUSIE.

Although Tad's great love is surfing, his main business is river and sea kayaking in his 2-person, 'sit-on-top' kayaks; float trips down the nearby ecologically diverse Rio Ora or out to the nearby islands in the ocean; snorkeling and adventuring everywhere. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna and knows every little nook and cranny along the coast line. Don't miss the experience of a kayak trip with him!

There is also great, protected ocean swimming at the lovely, nearly private beach; [ by law one cannot build within 50 meters of the high tide line ];plus various adventure trips you might like to take, and biking, hiking, snorkeling, horseback riding, waterfalls, canopy tours [great fun!], Ultra-light rides, and on and on. Rentals of bikes, horses, etc. are also available nearby. You can arrange to have the horses brought right to your door. AGAIN, ASK SUSIE ABOUT ANYTHING.

Right next door are Susie's "office" [she teaches Spanish and has yoga classes] and son, Chicho's, Blue Barrel Surf School's office, with a delightful covered porch where you can hang out.

Conveniently, there is a small grocery store next to it.

Carrillo is still a laid back, little village. Within a 5 minute walk, there are funny little restaurants, a few upscale ones, and the Guanamar Resort/ Sport Fishing Hotel just 100 yards down the road. It has a bar, restaurant, pool, Internet access, etc.

If you pine for funky little shops, bars, music and lots of activity, Samara is just three + miles away, on a GREAT NEW PAVED ROAD ALL THE WAY FROM SAN JOSE [I can't stress how important a PAVED road is---no ruts or CLOUDS of dust !] At the many diverse restaurants there, and in Carrillo, you will find great meals for much lower prices than you are used to. There is a fantastic one for BBQ just across from Popo's entrance. Don't miss the wonderful smoothies and other fruit drinks made from delicious local fruits.

The local 'casado' [rice and beans, salad, veg. and meat or fish, ---all on one plate] is a great buy as are delicious steaks and jumbo shrimp.

The beach, Playa Carrillo, is just about 400 yards down the road [ 4-5 minute walk ]. It's one of the most beautiful, clean, unspoiled beaches in Central America. You will usually have it all to yourselves. Its white sand stretches for over a mile around a semi-circular bay rimmed by shady palms. The water is kept calm by a reef at the entrance to the bay which makes it ideal for swimming [great for children] and for water sports.

The surrounding exotic flora and fauna remain untouched. At dusk, if you want a treat, stroll down to the beach and watch the flaming ball of the sun sink into the Pacific. Salt Water Magazine has named Puerto Carrillo as the top sport fishing spot in the WORLD, several times!

Eco-tourists come to Costa Rica to get involved with the environment and to commune with nature. Carrillo is still Costa Rica as it was before all the developers moved in. Most eco-tourism places charge their guests highly for the privilege of living more basically than they would at home, but we just want everyone to have a chance to enjoy this before it's all gone.

Quite a few airlines fly into Liberia-- about a 2 hour drive to Popo's, or to San Jose-[now, with the new road, only a 31/2 - 4 hour drive, by way of Caldera, Punteranus, then follow the sign that says, Liberia, BUT turn off to the left at the sign for the Taiwanese Peace Bridge and then head for Nicoya. From Nicoya you head towards Samara , then go past it for another 3 to 4 miles to Carrillo. Pass the beautiful, long beach and go up the hill; in several hundred yards, just past the cemetery, you'll see 'Popo's sign on your left. TURN LEFT HERE and you'll see Popo's, just down the road on your right.

Without a car, LOCAL buses and bikes are a good option. There are, ALSO, 2 PUBLIC buses a day, leaving from the ALFARO bus station in San Jose [KEEP AN EYE on your things!] Take a taxi to ALFARO BUS STATION in SAN JOSE. There is a 12 noon bus to NICOYA and a 5PM to NICOYA. Change buses at the NICOYA bus station for a connecting one going to Samara and CARRILLO. It ends just up the road from Popo's.[Ask anyone]. SAME THING GOING BACK TO S.J. FOR THE TRIP HOME. The bus leaves CARRILLO at 4 AM so catches all MID- MORNING FLIGHTS. There is also a PRIVATE shuttle service ,[Google it] that leaves early, about 8AM from hotels in San Jose. MUST HAVE A RESERVATION. This option requires an overnight stay in/near San Jose as the early AM daily trip doesn't work out with the available plane arrivals.

LIBERIA does not have a shuttle service going south to Carrillo but a rental car can be delivered to the airport for you or you can make arrangements with Popo's to be met by taxi. With all the places to go and see, a car is a good option, although there is a local bus and local taxis are inexpensive.

About Tad or Susie

My wife, Susie, and I have been living here in Carrillo for about 23years. We have five children, only the youngest [10 yrs] is still at home.. We are completely bi-lingual. We often visit the States but always long to get back to Carrillo.

Susie takes care of the treehouses-- and yoga and Spanish lessons. I concentrate on the kayaking trips, teaching surfing, and adventure trips [custom].The ecology here fascinates me and there is nothing I like more than to introduce visitors to it and teach them all about it, then, in return, to get to know all about our guests. Tad

Tad or Susie purchased this cabin in 1993

Why Tad or Susie chose Guanacaste

Tad: I was born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, then came here from Colorado in 1991, met, and married Susie, [a beautiful Costa Rican girl] and hve never left! We built our place here because it is near our lovely beach and great little town of Carrillo. It's also near a fantastic surfing beach [all our kids and I are surfers]. We have great restaurants and a laidback lifestyle but the nearby town of Samara has LOTS more frenetic activity, if you like that and want additional variety in restaurants and shops.

Our main road is now beautifully paved but there is still the same lovely, laid-back atmosphere as before for a complete change from the rush of elsewhere, nowadays. Go kayaking and spot wildlife or Indian relics, lie on a beautiful, empty beach; go surfing at our fantastic double-break surfing spot; go horseback riding or on a 4-wheeler, watch the big red ball of sun sink into the Pacific; whiz over the treetops and look down at orchids and monkeys on the canopy tour. Pore over the locally made trinkets or pottery for sale. At night, enjoy the many restaurants with great food and drinks at great prices. THAT'S why we choose to live here!

What makes this cabin unique

Back to nature! Who wouldn't enjoy a few nights in a tree house? If you never did it as a kid, now's your chance---and let your kids experience it. It's a complete contrast to ANYTHING they're going to be doing in today's world!

Great place, great people!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in these funky tree houses! It's a unique, simple and rustic place to stay in Costa Rica. If you're looking for a 5 star hotel then this may not be the place, but we really loved everything about it, as did our 7 year old daughter. The hosts, Susie and Tad, are wonderful – friendly, accommodating, and very laid back. Susie was very helpful arranging a fishing/snorkelling trip for us. From the tree houses it's just a 5 minute walk to the beautiful beach, and we often saw monkeys, iguanas and lots of birds in the area. We enjoyed local restaurants (Soda la Plaza and Los Delfines), and they both had good local food and friendly service. We also ate at the Hotel Esperanza restaurant – also good but a little pricier. We had a great time, and highly recommend this as a place for those looking for an alternative to a resort experience.

Family retreat in the most beautiful beach are of Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

Playa Carillo was highly anticipated in our family of four adventure around Costa Rica. Popo's Tree Houses were exactly what we were wanting to get away and experience a peaceful and relaxing stay. Tad, Susie and family were the best hosts a traveler could ever wish for. Safe, clean, genuine, great food and our girls, now 7 & 9 got to learn to surf by one of their sons. Walking around locally, strolling down to the beach for surfing, swimming and sunsets (absolutely amazing), it can't be beat. Chatting with Susie at meal times was very pleasurable. Exploring up and down the coast line, we always loved coming back to Playa Carillo and of course our time with the host's and other travelers. An all around spectacular time traveling through this part of Costa Rica - myself, Renee, Shayla and Kyla thank Tad, Susie and family for making this such a great experience.

A wonderful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We had a most lovely 9 days in Playa Carrillo at Popo's Treehouse. A truly relaxing holiday, from the comfortable accommodation, to a beach that can't be beat, to a handful of lovely restaurants in the village (including wonderful dinners cooked by the inestimable Susie..more on that in a minute). The treehouse was everything described online: basic yet comfortable and including all the necessities, a clean, good shower with lots of hot water though we didn't really need the hot - and most importantly, a setting that felt we were right in the jungle. The birds woke us up in the morning (in fact, on our first morning, the howler monkeys camped in the tree right outside our cabina - what a welcome!), the iguanas scurried along the roof and Popo's dogs came by for a daily visit. Tad and Susie were wonderful hosts - there when we needed them, available to guide and assist in any way possible but not intrusive. Breakfasts were delicious - coffee, fresh fruit, toast and served at our requested time each morning. Susie also offers dinners and we enjoyed them on three different evenings - tuna, chicken or homemade pasta, organic brown rice, salad and her specialty salad dressings. Playa Carillo is quiet but if that's what you want and like, this place is for you. We left Popo's and Costa Rica truly rejuvenated! Oh, I forgot to mention: Tad and Susie arranged for us to kayak and snorkel in the bay with their oldest son as guide; a great way to see the area from a different viewpoint some terrific fish sightings.

Better than we could have imagined!

  • 5 of 5

Where do I start? We arrived late after a long drive from the airport and were greeted by Tad and Susie. After a long day of traveling it was nice to sleep In a comfortable bed nestled in the trees. Susie makes a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit and toast and coffee each morning, and we quickly learned that she was such a gem! We met our other treehouse partners and planned a kayaking/snorkeling trip through Tad and guided by one of their sons. Snorkeled on the bay and saw beautiful fish. The beach is so beautiful. Great swimming and good shade.

We quickly felt like we were part of a family, with Susie and our treehouse partners! Tad gave us great driving directions to the nearby wildlife refuge. We spent an afternoon with Susie, Noni and friend, swimming up in a river in the mountains....perfect way to escape the heat!

Susie is a FABULOUS cook! We had her cook dinner for us twice...fresh yellowfin tuna one night, and chicken the other other night. Homemade sauces, organic food and did I say DELICIOUS?

We loved the treehouse...the morning sounds are loud...but amazing. Birds and howler monkeys in the trees. Most exciting!

Susie also has a great little organic, natural foods shop she runs with her smoothie stand. She is really such an amazing woman.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!

Can't wait to return!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fantastic time ever at Popo's. Tad and Susie were personable, knowledgeable, helpful, and engaging. They had lots of information to offer up of where to go, what to eat, and what the lowdown of the town was. What an idyllic spot and life they have right there! The town of Carrillo is just really a slice of paradise, and what better way to experience it than up in the trees?! We have two young children (8 and 11) and felt totally comfortable giving them some cash, sending them to the store on their own, walkin around town. Each morning we'd walk by a family of horses on our way to the most picturesque beach you could imagine. Popo had everything we needed in the kitchen and the treehouse was clean and we felt instantly at home there. You gotta eat at the Argentenian steakhouse right by the treehouses (Popo recommended)! We spent Thanksgiving dinner there, and it was supremely delicious. When we get back to Carrillo (hopefully real soon), Popo's is top of our list of where to stay!
