Very enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

The Captains Rest was everything we needed. Very clean, spacious and light.

Luko picked us up and took us back to the airport which we think is a must as it takes away the stress of finding the accommodation. Just a walk down the hill and you are in the centre of La Pad with all the restaurants and bars and the beach at the end of the Promenade. We ate mostly at the Restaurant Agora which served good food and had very pleasant staff and lovely clean facilities. A short walk up the hill and the bus stop to Dubrovnik is on the left hand side. We used Lea Travel (down the Promenade) for our trips out who we found to be very efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Captains Rest and would recommend it to anyone and will certainly stay there again if we visit La Pad.

Great view, great location, great landlord.

  • 5 of 5

Luko was a great landlord and so helpful. He picked us up from the bus station and offered to give us a ride when we left. Gratis! Talk about great customer service. Plus, once you arrive at the apartment, he has maps, and some books of recommendations given by previous guests. Very helpful. Listing was accurate but photos don't do it justice. Loved that the wall of windows all open so that you can sit inside but feel like you are outside. Nice view over the harbor where you can watch the cruise ships come in. Hint: time your trips into Old Town Dubrovnik when no ships or small ships arrive. There is also a website which tells you how many passengers will be arriving. Apartment was clean, looked new, had modern appliances and everything needed to self cater a holiday. There is a small restaurant downstairs in the same building that was open for breakfast and lunch only at this time. A nice sized grocery store and two bakeries are four or five blocks away. The #6 bus goes right by the house and it's the one you take to Old Town. There is a great beauty shop right around the corner too that was inexpensive and really did a nice job on Tina's hair. There are a number of good restaurants within a few minutes easy walk so there is no need to go to Old Town every time you want to go out to eat. We enjoyed the historical aspect of Old Town, the churches and museums, walking the walls, the cable car to the fort but Old Town itself is, in my opinion, very touristy in not necessarily a good way. I would suggest getting out of Old Town to other neighborhoods (like Lapad) and meet and chat with some local folks away from the cruise ship crowds of Old Town. Go to Mato Krile's wine shop. He makes it on site and some of it rivals the best Chianti Classico Reserva. I absolutely recommend staying at Luko's place without any reservations. It had everything we needed and more.

Fabulous apartment with scenic view

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful apartment with a great view of the boats coming and going in the harbour. It had everything you could want including air conditioning, Wi-Fi, kitchen with modern appliances, spacious bedrooms, shower, tv, etc and was exceptionally clean. The owner Luko was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, for a nominal fee he picked us up and dropped off at the airport (on time). Lapad itself was a delight beautiful scenery, turquoise blue sea excellent for swimming. There are really nice restaurants and bars which are reasonably priced. We enjoyed walking right round Lapad on the coastal path. There are regular buses into Dubrovnik Old City where you can walk around the city walls, cable cars, kayaking, shopping or boat trips to Lokrum island. There are many other islands to visit we enjoyed the 3 island trip, which departed from Lapad. If you are self catering there is a market close by most mornings which sells home grown local produce and fresh fish. Overall we had a fabulous holiday staying at Captains Rest in Lapad, would definitely go back.

Room with a View

  • 5 of 5

All that previous reviews have said about Captain's Rest is accurate. No need to repeat. But must mention the bay window. it is a great feature with lovely views over Gruz Harbour. The window opens up creating the feel of an indoor, 'outdoor' space. A walk down the pedestrian walkway to Lapad Bay was always pleasurable. The Slasti Kutak kiosk is great for coffee and crepes. We also liked the Art Caffe/Bistra Konavoka. it had best inside space. Hotel Zagreb has a lovely outdoor areafor dining. We also liked Hotel Kompas down at the bay. Sunsets are great there, the food and service very good; and, always some form of musical entertainment.

There are walks you can do. Head around the headland of Babin Kuk for grat views and plenty of stop-off points for a coffee or beer. Feeling energetic, you can walk up Velika Petka, the big hill with the radio mast on top. The views on way up and at top are fantastic.

Thw Old Town is a great visit. Points in other reviews about Cruise ships and crowds are well made. Take the cable car up Mt. Srd. Great views over the old town. Nice facility at top. Fort Imperial also up there. Very evocative of the siege of Dubrovnik. The old town is probably better after dark, lit up by street lights and spotlights.

The 'Tommy' supermarket will meet your self-catering needs. There is another supermarket - 'Pemo' - as you head down to Gruz Harbour, take a left then first right. here is a wee cafe on the street that pemo is on too.

We had the best time on holiday in Dubrovnik. Captain's Rest was a big part of that. A comfortable base to relax in and to retuen to. Our thanks to Luko for the lifts to and from the Airport, for his good advice, and for the opportunity to spend time in his apartment. Hvala!

Great Dubrovnik Base & Central Location

  • 5 of 5

We spent one wonderful week at Teresa and Luko's Lapad apartment 'The Captain's Nest' and plan to return soon.

HOSPITALITY

Terezia and Luko were a joy to communicate with as we searched for a suitable apartment and after we decided to rent it, we took their advice and arranged for an airport pickup (30€). The scenic view on the coast was mesmerizing and along the way Luko provided us with helpful information.

APARTMENT

The 2 BR apartment had everything we needed and we enjoyed the sunny view from the dining room. It was fun the see the cruise ships sail in and out and we took advantage of the free WiFi to determine the passenger capacity of each ship, deciding whether to avoid the city center when the cruise passengers crowd the city center or to brave the masses.

LOCATION

We enjoyed the central location in Lapad, mainly getting around with bus 6.

Tip: Buy the Dubrovnik Card at the airport and you'll receive a Dubrovnik bus card, free access to top attractions, and various discounts.

On Luko's advice we went to Cavtat for the day with bus 10 and ate lunch at Tavern Ivan on the harbor and enjoyed the best fish platter ever.

You can grocery shop at Thomy or other grocery stores easily accessible by foot or 2 stops from the apartment with bus 6 (down the hill). If you need toiletries, go to DM located all over Dubrovnik.

EATS

Pivnica Dubrava - We took Luko's advice and ate at this pub/beer garden specializing in grilled meats that serve huge portions so beware. It's located in Babin Kuk (bus 6 towards hotels/conference center where you can enjoy stunning sunsets).

Restaurant Orsan - Another tip from Luko was the Yacht Club Orsan restaurant. They have indoor/outdoor seating overlooking the harbor and grill their fresh fish on an open grill. So nice we ate there twice.

Klarisa - I was skeptical about this restaurant located within the city walls, but the smell of the orange blossoms drew us in. This was one of the best meals we had and let me tell you, we are die-hard foodies. Love the Croatian-French influence.

Cafe Dubravka - In front of Pile Gate bus stop, views and 'Fantasy' cake to die for!!

Levanat Restaurant - We discovered a wonderful walk along the coast at the end of the Lapad Bay promenade. Keep walking past the cafes, beach, swim spots, and you'll find the restaurant.

TO DOs

We'll leave it up to you to decide, but you won't be disappointed with the Captain's Nest apartment or Dubrovnik.

A wonderful apartment in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week’s holiday at the Captain’s Rest. The apartment was just as described, spacious and bright with everything you could need and more, for a comfortable stay. As said in a previous review, the huge bay window provides a glorious view of Gruz Harbour and the mountains beyond, which made dining-in an absolute pleasure. Situated in the Babin Kuk area of Lapad, the apartment is just a few minutes’ walk away from cafés, restaurants, a bakery, the supermarket and bus stop to the Old Town (the no.6 bus, which runs every 15 minutes), making for an ideal location.

No visit to Dubrovnik would be complete if you didn’t venture into the Old Town at least once and walk the magnificent wall that surrounds the city. But, with large cruise ships docking daily, bringing thousands of visitors, it can get busy. So, if you wish to escape the crowds, on Luko’s, the apartment’s owner, recommendation, we ventured to quieter places in the surrounding area. Our first visit was to Cavtat, a very pretty fishing village that can be reached either by bus (no.6 from the apartment to the bus station at Gruz harbour, then no.10 to Cavtat) or by boat from the Old Town harbour, both take approximately 50 minutes. From the Old Town harbour, you can also take a boat to Lokrum for the day. Lokrum is a pine clad, uninhabited island, just a 10 minute ride away, which has several deserted bays with crystal clear water that are ideal for swimming.

If you wish to go even further afield I would recommend a trip to the pretty Elifite Islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. We took the local ferry ‘Jadroline’ from Gruz Harbour, which was very inexpensive and enabled us to do our ‘own thing’ rather than be ‘clock-watching’ as you are on an organised trip. Leaving Gruz at 10.00am, we were able to have 4 hours on Lopud, where we walked through a valley in the mountains to the other side of the island and to a glorious sandy beach for a swim and some lunch, before catching another ferry to Kolocep, the smallest of the 3 islands. Here, apart from one hotel, a few houses, a shop and café, there is little else and gave for a peaceful and relaxing couple of hours watching the world go by, before having to catch the next ferry back to Gruz.

To sum up, whatever your requirements are for a holiday, the Captain’s Rest is in an ideal location to offer it all and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Car: not necessary

Captain's Rest apartment is situated on Lapad Peninsula in a peaceful area of Dubrovnik. There are nice beaches in walking distance from the apartment.

Staying at Lapad is like taking a “two centre” holiday – without having to change location. On one side, you have the ‘city centre’, with all its many historic sites and cultural events. Then, on the other side, you have all you need for a quiet and relaxing ‘beach holiday’, with restaurants, café-bars, sports facilities, and romantic strolls around the coastline – all within easy walking distance.

You could take the local bus to the city centre. The bus stop is only 50m away, and buses run every 10 minutes.

This makes the ‘Captain’s Rest’ the most convenient location in Dubrovnik

Other Activities: boat trips to islands, snorkling
