About Richard

Originally from Chicago and the western suburbs we fell in love with the Galena area years ago as we drove through the area en route to Dubuque, Iowa. Eventually we bought this cottage that we have so much enjoyed and now would like to offer you the chance to fall in love with Galena and the beauty of JoDavies County

Richard purchased this house in 2008

What makes this house unique

A special little cottage-somewhat quaint, nestled within the settlement...trees, a seasonal view of Lake Galena, beautiful starry nights and the lull of Galena falls...hiking trails just down the road. A quiet retreat, tho minutes away from tourist hustle and bustle of historic Galena if desired.

Great Home in Galena!

  • 4 of 5

Just wanted to thank Richard for his hospitality and sharing his home with us. Property exactly as described and having read reviews, I knew it was in close proximity to the other homes. It's a short drive to the Owner's Club (gorgeous and fun!) as well as into downtown Galena. We fell in love with Galena and will be back.

I'd only suggest that the doorway and back porch be swept up of cobwebs and bugs. I realize this home is in a wooded area but we didn't sit on the back porch to enjoy the view due to the closeness of the trees leaves covered in webs.

Owner's Response: Our place is part of an association which is supposed to take care of those issues. We will be looking into it, and in worse case address it in the immediate space around the deck and doorway if the assiciation does not move on this quickly.

Cozy, Cute Home

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for two couples and a small dog. The house is very cozy and comfortable and has plenty of space for everyone to hang out. We had never been to The Galena Territory before so we had no idea what to expect, but wow was it beautiful! This home is located not too far from Eagle Ridge Resort, and there is even a path that will take you to the resort from the home. We had dinner in the lounge one night and it was very good and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed just walking around the Territory and taking in the scenery.

The house was very clean and there were no signs of previous pets having stayed there. Even though the houses in the Settlement are really close to one another we never really heard or saw anyone else when we were hanging out on the deck. It was very quiet and peaceful. The only small issue we had was that the night we arrived it was extremely hot in the house. It was in the 90s during the day and the ac was totally turned off, so it took quite some time for the house to cool down, especially the bedrooms upstairs. Other than that everything else was great. We certainly plan on returning in the future and would recommend this home as a great accommodation in the Territory.

For a great breakfast head to Otto's - you won't be disappointed. Also Blaum Bros. Distilling Company is producing some pretty amazing spirits and their drink menu is really extensive and reasonably priced.

A PERFECT Memorial Day Weekend!!

  • 4 of 5

For those of your who have not been to the Galena Territory like us, it's a HUGE 7000 acre place that is GORGEOUS with a mix of housing spread out throughout the property. Settler Lane is part of a neighborhood called The Settlement and is a grouping of about 4 small cluster of homes. I was surprised the houses were right next to each other b/c I had imagined it more spread out but it really didn't matter - all of the houses are adorable and the neighbors and visitors were all really nice. The house is perfect for a small family. We brought a blow up bed b/c we have 3 kids and it fit perfectly in the 2nd bedroom. The kitchen was fabulous and my kids ADORED that there was Netflix (something we stopped at our house). The deck is small and was SO buggy b/c there is a ton of trees etc....so it's pretty but just so natty. The bathrooms were sufficient and we were so happy there was a sample shampoo and conditioner b/c we forgot that!! The house is also located right next to a paved walking bath. We were SO happy the weather was nice. We LOVED the owners club, the falls, downtown Galena, everything. We loved that we could bring our dog w/ us on our trip too!! 2 parents, 3 kids, 1 dog - SUNSHINE, GREAT house = A very happy family!!

Anniversary week in Galena

  • 5 of 5

Hello,

My husband, our dog Grover and I enjoyed a lovely anniversary weekend at the Settlement Home May 20-22nd 2016. It was picture perfect for what we needed. The listing is just as it seems. The property was clean and well equipped for cooking in and enjoying long walks around the Galena Territory. The location is wonderful for getting to and from downtown Galena and enjoying the owner's club as well as golf. We would highly recommend the settlement home to anyone looking for a little R and R with their fur friends. Thank you Rick!

Peaceful Place for Relaxation

  • 4 of 5

We chose this cottage (settlement home) as a Spring Break getaway. It was a wonderful surprise to hear Thunder Bay Falls from the back patio. The home is located high on a ridge so you get a great view of the Falls and Lake Galena. We took advantage of the paved hiking trails and our dog loved the trek as well. This house is in a small cluster of similar homes so it truly is like a settlement. The Galena Territory, which is a vastly sprawling resort community where this home is located, has 3 golf courses, plenty of trails for walking, two clubhouses and a General Store. You'll need to take the car to get to the Owner's Club to use the indoor pool and large fitness room. Our teenager liked the large game room with pool tables, pinball and Ping-Pong at the Owner's Club. Parents - there was no lifeguard on duty at the pool when we were there. The home had reliable electric heat and we mostly used the upstairs shower with no concerns. The beds were sufficient as there is a layer of memory foam over the actual mattress, it may seem firm at first, but was suitable. The Wi-Fi is speedy and our family enjoyed the board games provided and free Netflix. The fridge and stove are starting to show their age but work fine. The kitchen was well stocked, only thing missing was a cookie sheet for baking. Coffee and tea were provided. It's about a 15 minute drive down the highway to Galena for shopping and dining out. The owner was very helpful in recommending places to eat. We also toured President Grant's home while in town. We'll definitely keep this home in mind for a return trip.

Great get-away!

  • 5 of 5

Quiet, cozy, well stocked. Fireplace with wood provided was very nice. The settlement home was everything we dreamed of. The view and sound of the waterfalls from our deck was a bonus, as well as wild turkeys in back of the home in the expansive wooded area. The General Store was fun to visit and when we wanted more than they had, we went down the highway to Piggly Wiggly food store.

Overall, a fun stay -- and another huge plus was bringing our dog along. Will plan to come again.

Nestled within 6800 acres of the Galena Territory our cottage provides the perfect backdrop from which to enjoy 19th century history and architecture, great local wineries and restaurants, arts and crafts and many eclectic shops found in Galena and the surrounding towns of Elizabeth, Hanover and Stockton.Within the territory you might enjoy Illinois' largest golf course, the Eagle Ridge Spa, the marina from which you could rent pontoons, the Shenandoah riding stables, outdoor and indoor swimming, a fitness center, and a game room featuring pool tables, ping pong, foosball, etc. Miles of trails for hikers and cyclists, and wonderful opportunities for birdwatching.

The town of Galena is home to art galleries, spas, wineries, irish music and the home of President Ulysses S Grant. More trails to bicycle or-perhaps canoeing or kayaking the Mississippi backwaters is more to your fancy. Come winter there are the skiing/snowboarding opportunities at Chestnut mountain or snowshoeing at the Galena Cellar Vineyard.

Downtown Dubuque is 40 minutes away--here one might enjoy various concerts and musical/cultural arts events, casinos, Mississippi riverboat rides, and the world's steepest trolley.

For lovers of nature-rolling hills close to the might Mississippi; for lovers of wine-the many award winning wineries; lovers of outdoor sports; lovers of history; or just lovers...you are welcome.
