Featured in the Times '50 Best Villas in the Caribbean' list, 15 November 2014
'The overall effect is a mash-up of Mad Men, Rudyard Kipling and James Bond. Features include a deep veranda, white cathedral ceilings, old metal fans, white muslin and a bathtub at the foot of the master bedroom's four-poster.' The Sunday Times, 6 June 2013.
'Cross Gone with the Wind with an early Bond film (think Dr No) and the resulting style will be something akin to that of Naomi Cleaver's gorgeous house on the Caribbean island of Nevis: ceiling fans, white muslin, lush colours and romantic verandas, plus leggy furniture, graphic fabrics and sleek mid-century minimalism.' Katherine Sorrell, Daily Telegraph magazine, 23 October 2010.
'Naomi Cleaver has kept it simple – white-painted wooden floors, cathedral ceilings and walls (except in the living room with grey/blue tones inspired by a cactus in the garden). And she brought over her Fifties’ furniture that was upholstered to match. The whole look’s a fantasy blend of Mad Men, Somerset Maugham and James Bond.' Cheryl Markosky, Primelocation.com
The Galleries has 5,500 feet of living space, with two double bedrooms – one air conditioned – three bathrooms, large living room, vast kitchen, studio and an air-conditioned media room with WiFi, Hi-Fi, books and over a hundred movies on DVD.
There is an acre of garden, featuring mahogany, banana, citrus, palm and mango trees and a variety of cactus, and bird life including herons, white egrets, warblers, banana quits, grass quits, finches and hummingbirds.
Plus a 70 foot swimming pool, with outdoor shower, loungers and eating area.
We have been visiting for over 20 years, and we've owned the villa there since 2005. We lived there for two years 2008-2010 while we managed a major refurbishment. Naomi wrote her book 'The Joy of Home' there (Conran Octopus 2010).
Naomi Cleaver purchased this villa in 2005
The villa is elegant and funky, mainly stone and wood with natural breeze and a wide wraparound veranda gallery. There is secluded 70 foot pool and large airy kitchen. Nevis itself is small and peaceful (there are no traffic lights!) but with plenty to do - hiking, cycling, sailing, golf and tennis - plus beautiful beaches and romantic plantation house restaurants.
Designed and refurbished by Naomi Cleaver, designer, author and TV presenter ('Other People's Houses', 'Britain's Best Home', 'Honey, I Ruined the House', 'Grand Designs Trade Secrets', etc.) www.naomicleaver.com
The Galleries really has a sense of understated elegance. The photographs show exactly what the house is like. It really is that good!
Our stay at The Galleries was wonderful. The manager, Amelia, is delightful and so helpful. The property is clean and well maintained. We all enjoyed sailing, snorkeling, biking, and even hiked to the top of Mt. Nevis! We loved our pool time with the monkeys in the backyard. I will recommend the house to family and friends. Oliver and Naomi, the home owners, have a real jewel! Thank you for sharing your home and your knowledge of the island. We hope to return in years to come.
Wow! We have just returned from a week's+ stay at The Galleries. It was perfection. The owner, Oliver, & local villa manager, Amelia, are fantastic and communicated regularly leading up to our arrival--making everything seamless. The villa itself is beautifully decorated (no surprise given Naomi's talent) and is situated among fruit-laden trees & vibrant flowers, which attract green vervet monkeys and beautiful birds. The villa is a short distance to the island's best beaches and the well-maintained pool is perfect for lazy afternoons. We were a family of four (two adults and two young children) and it was a delight for all ages. We highly recommend this special villa.
The Galleries was lovely. It was our second stay at this stylish and elegant villa which recently received a decorating update—now with two master, ensuite bedrooms, on each side of the comfortable, airy living room, and a small kitchen and media room to the rear. A very large kitchen and third bedroom and bath are on the lower level. There are so many screened windows that there are always breezes throughout. This home has all the modern comforts, plus its architecture, with a wide, wrap-around veranda, makes one feel a part of an earlier, romantic age. The lap pool is so inviting, set away and below the house, surrounded by trees, with monkeys adding that touch of the exotic. Oliver Cleaver makes all the arrangements for the rental and arrival so smooth and easy. After a long flight, it’s wonderful to be met at the St. Kitts airport, driven across St. Kitts to a water taxi, whiz across the water to Nevis (it’s so exhilarating), and be met by Amelia Chiverton who will help make your stay on Nevis very comfortable. The very clean rental car arranged through Oliver offered good cushioning on Nevis’s sometimes bumpy roads. Also, you’re an easy drive to nearby restaurants, like Chrishi Beach Club, where you can enjoy lunch and then laze on lounges on the beach. Don’t miss Golden Rock for its lobster sandwiches and its beautiful, ever-expanding garden and Bananas for its coconut cake and another pretty garden. Have fun comparing rum punches everywhere—I even found that I liked the rum punch at Montpelier better than Sunshine’s Killer Bees (though we did go to Sunshine’s three times during our stay. The whole grilled fish there is delicious.) Everyone on Nevis is very friendly. Staying at The Galleries on Nevis is the perfect getaway.
The house occupies several beautifully landscaped acres on a rise overlooking the sea, very near some of the best beaches on Nevis. We loved the open plan, and the way the house invites the outdoors in. The lap pool in a shady spot in the garden was welcome after a day in the sun and salt water. Evening visits by a troop of monkeys gave us all much pleasure. The two very large upstairs bedrooms are on either side of the living room, with screened doors on all sides that give on to a wide porch, which circles the house. We didn't need the air conditioners; the bedrooms were plenty cool from the cross-breeze and very comfortable. The downstairs bedroom isn't air-conditioned and doesn't get the breeze, but there are a couple of fans to help with that. There's a well-appointed butler's kitchen in a wing to itself upstairs. The kitchen downstairs is huge, and we didn't come close to making the most of it. Fixing our breakfasts there in the morning and organizing snacks and an occasional light supper in the evening was a pleasure, as were the variety of birds that visited us when we were at the table on the patio. This was the perfect spot for me and my family (there were 5 of us) to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's.
The house is stunning in a truly beautiful setting. We could not fault the facilities and everything we needed was provided with bells on. A lovely touch was that we were sent a lot of ideas for things to do and places to go in advance of arriving. Each trip lived up to the hype. We basically did not want to leave the island.
We had a fabulous weeklong stay at The Galleries. Oliver was very attentive and prompt with all communications and made the arrangements for our travel to and from the airport in St. Kitts to the property. Customer service was A+. Our travel and connections went seamlessly. The property itself is beautiful and well maintained. The house was perfectly suited to hosting our group of 2 couples given the 2 bedrooms and bath upstairs are almost mirror images of each other with each connecting to the lovely veranda that wraps around the entire upstairs. There is also a third bedroom and bath downstairs that are lovely. The 2 upstairs bedrooms have air conditioners but we barely used them given the nice breezes. We found the kitchen to be very well equipped with modern appliances. Each morning we prepared breakfast and enjoyed sitting on the outside patio area looking out at the lovely grounds. Oulie beach is an easy walk but I do advise renting a car to explore the island. Amelia is very attentive and arranged our car rental. At the end of the day it was lovely to come home to the 70 foot pool for a refreshing swim. The pool area is lovely and we had no problems with monkeys as noted in an earlier post. The view from the veranda is spectacular looking out at the ocean and St. Kitts. A perfect setting to enjoy sundowners. I definitely recommend this property to anyone seeking a relaxing week on the beautiful island of Nevis.
Nevis is old-fashioned Caribbean. Just five miles wide, it’s a relaxed island rounded by beaches and rising through rainforest to a 3,200 ft peak.
“On the map Nevis is a pool of green champagne. Life here seems defined by the constant, although somewhat half-hearted, struggle to achieve maximum comfort for minimum effort.' Sunday Times, April 11, 2010.
Nevis has plenty of places to visit, from old plantation inns (like Montpelier, where Nelson was married in 1787, and The Hermitage), to funky beach bars (Double Deuce, Sunshine’s) and romantic restaurants set high in the rainforest (Golden Rock, Bananas).
There is tennis and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. championship golf course. Hiking, cycling and horse riding are easy to arrange, as well as scuba diving and kayaking. We can also organise fishing charters and day sails.
We can also arrange car hire for your stay. But please note: there are no traffic lights on Nevis
