About the property

Comforting 1700 Sq.ft. two story 3/2 Mountain Cabin- Stress Reliever's Dream

Cabin In Waterfall Cove. Sit next to the most musical creek you'll ever hear. You won't want to leave! The newly renovated vintage cedar two-story cabin in the Nantahala Forest sleeps 6-8, is situated in a private cove .Year round access by short paved drive to front door. No long or steep gravel road to endure and NO 4-wheel vehicle needed, unlike most cabins in the area. Ideal & very easy access for motorcyclist as well. This cabin has very large windows that allows the outdoors to be a part of the indoors. No feeling of being closed in or confined. Two large screened porches with rocking chairs adjacent to the flowing creek are shaded by a large canopy of giant hickory and poplar trees in a natural forest setting. Yet no long drives to all the places you want to visit . Bryson City (15 minutes); Nantahala Outdoor Center (4 minutes) ; the Great Smokey Mtns. National Park and Harrods' Casino in the middle of Cherokee Reservation (20 minutes away) The Cabin has a new & fully equipped modern kitchen with quality cook-ware and all the kitchen extras you would like to have in your own kitchen. Open the windows in all bedrooms and sleep to the sounds of the melodious creek that flows from the waterfall all year round. No need for air conditioning here as the canopy of trees and flowing creek keep the cabin cool and comfortable year round. The musical creek wraps around the cabin and is shallow enough for children to play. The cabin has 3 bedrooms : with king bed (downstairs including TV) & queen and twin beds bedrooms (upstairs) . Two new bathrooms, one downstairs and one upstairs. The screened back porch doubles as a 4th bedroom/sleeping area with a comfortable futon that opens into a double bed, and the most favorite place to sleep or just take a nap listening to the cascading creek. The living room is spacious and cozy with bay windows overlooking the creek, Lazy Boy recliners, flat screen TV & convenient internet, wi-fi included and a fireplace to keep you warm on cool nights.Full laundry room upstairs and extra storage for luggage and misc. large items. We took extra care to include the most comfortable mattress in each bedroom. We also took extra care to create numerous conversation areas so that even with 8 people there is always a place to 'get away' for private conversations rather than always having others 'underfoot' Enjoy your favorite book while sitting in one of two outdoor swings in the front or back terraces, or on a bench by the creek and waterfall as well, or rock in one of two large screen porches. The temperature here is always cooler than Bryson City due to the eco-rainforest environment and altitude. Walk to the secluded waterfall just a few yards behind the cabin and refresh yourself in the spring-fed water that forms a wading pool at the base & flows down into the creek that wraps around the cabin. The extra large fire pit area is paved with slate stones accessible by the wooden bridge. Grill a steak or roast hot dogs in the fire pit or chose one of two bar-b-que grills The beautiful old stone kitchen floor was preserved from the original farmhouse. Fully modernized retreat preserving its 1940's vintage ambiance. Offered for the first time to discriminating vacationers who are looking for something different. WHAT TO DO HERE? Many family Rafting outfitters are close by and THE NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) is a MUST SEE & is only one mile from my cabin, where Kayak and white water rafters end their trip down the Nantahala River. While there, have lunch or dinner at River's End restaurant. The NOC is a great place for families with lots of outdoor seating along the river and serves food and beverages to eat outside on large decks. Often NOC provides live music, games and other entertainment. For Day trips it is about 15 minutes to Bryson City and DEEP CREEK for renting tubes for the whole family to tube down the river in the National Park. In Bryson City , the Smokey Mountain Scenic Railroad and Polar Express takes you on a fabulous ride through the forest. Also very close by you can ring or rent a pontoon boat and enjoy the day on Lake Fontana. Several rivers and lakes are very nearby for fishing, rafting, kayaking, tubing, or boating . Enjoy the new zip-line tree top excursions in the Nantahala Forest, go trail biking, hiking or horseback riding on trails galore yet so centrally located. Reserve the big cabin and experience what our past guests call "a little piece of heaven".

About Theresa Wigginton

I am a native Florida girl with an eye for adventure. I am a practicing attorney who is tired of the rat race (the rats were winning) and was looking for just the perfect place to retire. As a Floridian, I love the water but was tired of the 9 months of hot weather. I started searching for 'my little cabin by a creek' for several years but could not find the right spot. If it was quiet, didn't feel like living in a subdivision, had lots of nature, tall trees, and water close by to fish, swim and boat, it usually was too far from everything, hard to get to in winter, too remote for comfort, or was one of too many cabins advertised and made to look like a tacky Daniel Boone's place for tourist. One day I stumbled on this abandoned house that most would never look at twice and the rest is history. It was sitting lonesome in a cove surrounded by hills of giant hickory trees on three sides, not too visible from the Hwy, but just minutes from lots of rivers, lakes, trails, and 'adventure'. Strange was that the road was paved going in. Later I learned it was an abandon Hwy after the new Hwy 19/74 was built. The giant hickory trees were covered in vines, the creek was full of dead branches, overgrown, and the ravine in front was knee deep in Kudzu and hid the flowing stream. It had been on the market for several years, but perhaps others didn't see what I saw it could be. I couldn't get the vision of its potential out of my mind. Looking past the mildew, trash, vines, and Kudzu, and derelict appearance, I saw what it now has become, a stress-free retreat that replenishes my soul.

Theresa Wigginton purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Theresa Wigginton chose Bryson City

To me the ideal retreat would have to have a creek to enjoy, but not one that I had to walk to experience. This property has the most musical little stream I've ever heard in all my searches. I was intrigued that with open windows, in nearly every room in the house I could hear the bubbling steam. Lying in a cozy bed or rocking on the porches and reading a good book, being lulled to sleep by the sounds of falling water is my idea of heaven on earth. I made sure the two porches with wooden floors, had rocking chairs, and I envisioned people sitting with a good glass of wine, reminiscing about the adventures they had that day. When I saw the ravine initially overgrown with Kudzu vines, I could imagine wildflowers and weeping willows swaying in sync with the music of the creek. In planning the remodel I wanted outdoor swings to sit and talk with my friends or just a quiet place to be alone. With much diligence and a desire to make it a happy place again, I began a six months remolding 'adventure'. Every room has been considered in making it cozy, convenient, and comfortable. After clearing the kudzu vines and planting grass in the ravine, I promptly planted three weeping willows to grow tall and provide cool shade for picnics by the creek that flows down through it. I brought in tree surgeons to trim the neglected giant hickories and dogwood that abound on the property. I personally searched for the right furniture and decorations that would be the icing on the cake. I have diligently photographed the metamorphosis and am proud to say the worm turned into a beautify butterfly!

What makes this cabin unique

Two large screened porches, a year-round cascading stream flows from the waterfall and circles the cabin from back to front and can be heard no matter where you sit. The tall hickory trees and dogwoods keep the property cool and shaded no matter what the temperature. I love being close to so many fun places within minutes of the cabin. The surrounding forest always gives peace to any weary traveler.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Nice cottage home that sleeps up to 6 very comfortably. Has a short trail behind house that takes you to a pretty nice sized waterfall which we used for our family photos. House has no AC but does appear to have heat and since it was summer we didn't use heat. Paddle fans abound and with windows opened we had nice cool nights for sleeping. There is a creek that runs alongside house which offers a very nice sound when sitting in either one of the two screened porches. On the back porch there is a futon which one of us slept on during some of the stay just to hear the musical sounds of the water. Nice outdoor swings and seating too. Kitchen came with everything needed and appliances were new looking. Decor is simply stated but perfect for this atmosphere of mountain life. We did have wifi however some phone providers do not work from here at this time but that has nothing to so with the house or owners. Towels and bedding were luxury new. Bathrooms all new. Water wasnt hot in showers but that could be altered by hot water heater setting though we sidnt touch that dueing our visit. We would and will rent this again and highly recommend it. PS: The only downfall was that the property signage is not lit to find easily at night and it sits as you come around a mountain corner so having lights at the sign would be a great help. That's the only issue we had...and we managed it too

Need extra room for larger parties? The Tree House (owners' cabin ) is available for rent as well but only to the same group for privacy reasons. Sleeps 4 with its own creek and deck overlooking it. Across from the big cabin but far enough for privacy. Bikers Welcome. Don't forget to ride the dragon's tail highway in Deal's Gap, just 30 minutes from cabin. Other great places to ride & just a short distance away are Fontana Dam, Great Smokey Mtn Scenic Highway, but just about any road you take is worth the trip.

This is a beautiful cabin in a secluded spot. We really enjoyed the amenities like two screened in porches, the spacious kitchen, and the nice little stream bubbling nearby.

Fall getaway

  • 4 of 5

Waterfall cove worked out really great for my family. Close to NOC and downtown Bryson City. The house was stocked with everything you may need for a weeks vacation. The owner lives a stones throw from the cabin but never intruded on our space. The only downside was that it was a very mild week and the house was warm at night as there is no A/C. An attic fan helps keep the air moving but some nights it was a bit too warm. Overall a great time! Outdoor fire pit was a highlight.

Super clean cabin that is wonderful for families!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six had a comfortable stay in this cabin. We loved the ravine on the property and the soothing sounds from it in the evening. Everything you need to make meals is in the cozy kitchen. If you are planning to go rafting on the river you can’t beat this location. All around an amazing stay and we hope to return soon.

Early fall vacation with young children

  • 5 of 5

We picked the property because I thought my children would enjoy the creek and waterfall. It did not disappoint! They even hiked up to the top of the mountain which was a fun adventure. Theresa did an excellent job of creating seating areas throughout the property; so, depending on the time of day, there was somewhere cozy to sit and take in the landscape. We enjoyed using the fire pit to cook hot dogs and marshmellows a couple of nights. She provides roasting sticks and we found plenty of fire wood on the property. The owners provide plenty of dishes and the pantry is well stocked with items supplied by the owner or left by previous renters. The house sits off a fairly well traveled road so it wasn't as secluded as my husband would have liked but I prefer not to feel isolated or driving up windy roads so it didn't bother me. The proximity to the NOC is also very appealing. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely book again if in the area. In regards to sightseeing, I have young children so we didn't get into the more adventurous outings like rafting but we really enjoyed our picnic (try The Filling Station deli) & hiking at Deep Creek, exploring everything that NOC has to offer ( the kids LOVED the rope treehouse but call ahead in offseason to find out when it will be open), and a train ride on the great smokey mountain express followed by dinner at The Warehouse at Natahala Brewing Company (highly recommend and if you sit outside your kids can play in the grassy area.) Thank you again for having us Theresa!

Antique shops, good restaurants galore or biking and hiking trails near by. If you just want to relax by our melodious creek in outside swings or rock on the large porches while listening to the creek, this is the place for you. The temperature is always 7-10 degrees cooler in the cove than elsewhere due to the rainforest Eco systems. Enjoy the beautiful waterfall just a short walk from the back porch. Fully equipped kitchen with farmhouse stone floors in this 3 bedroom-2 bath cabin, freshly renovated and new on the market for rental. The back porch overlooking the creek has a futon for extra sleeping for those who want to get the feeling of sleeping 'outdoors'. There are only 2 cabins in the cove and we own both of them. The second cabin is ' up in the trees' on the south wall of the cove and sleeps 4. It is a great place to add to your rental if you need room for more than 8 . Contact me for more details.
