About Thelma Pruitt
My family goes back 5 generations in Newton County. After high school, I married Avery Pruitt and we built our home on a section of the Pruitt farmstead. I attended college when our children were pre-school and I served as center director/teacher for the local Headstart program for 13 years. I then managed our family trucking business for 10 years. I'm currently working as instrutional assistant at Jasper Public Schools.
Thelma Pruitt purchased this Studio in 1962
Why Thelma Pruitt chose Jasper
Avery Pruitt was born and raised on this section of the Pruitt farmstead - a fifth generation in the Pruitt lineage. The place is decorated with family heirlooms, reminiscent of earlier times. I live in the home we built in 1964, ready to welcome family, friends and guests to the Buffalo River Bunkhouse.
What makes this Studio unique
Every morning when I awake, I'm reminded that I live in paradise, and I welcome guests to share the quiet and the pastoral scenery of the Little Buffalo River valley just one mile East of Jasper, AR on Hwy. 74 EAST.

Thelma was easy to communicate with and we had what we needed during our stay. Would have liked a listing of avaliable restaurants in the area and ideas for things to do.
I appreciate your suggestion to make a list of places to eat and things to do. I do have a brouchere published by our local Chamber of Commerce that lists all those places. Thank you for choosing to stay at the Buffalo River Bunkhouse and I hope you will return as often as you are in the area.
Enjoyable stay overall
We were a bit disappointed we didn't have a "view overlooking the river". The area was overgrown and view occluded, due to owner health issues, so understandable, but the river was muddy anyway from the rain. No big deal! The location is convenient to grocery store and wonderful places to explore. The place was clean and very comfortable! I would stay there again. Beautiful area.
I don't advertise a view of the Little Buffalo River due to the large trees and undergrowth between the Bunkhouse and the river. These trees and undergrowth are fully leafed out in greenery throughout the summer. You can view the river in the winter months. When my husband was alive, he used our Kubota tractor to keep a wide path cleared to the river, but we never cut the trees or dozed the undergrowth. Now, we use a riding mower to mow a path to the river.
Good place to stay with excellent location
The little bunkhouse was very accommodating and the hosts were fantastic. The bunkhouse has all the basic amenities and you want for nothing. Scout the dog was so sweet and played well with our older dog, even though he really didn't want to play😀 If you want a good place to lay your head at night, good kitchen and washer and dryer pick this place. The only suggestion is to get a new shower head to help with pressure of water.
Thank you for choosing to stay at the Buffalo River Bunkhouse. I will definitely look into the shower head situation.
My husband and I have wanted to float the Buffalo River ever since we got married in 2008 and crossed the river coming back from our honeymoon in Eureka Springs. When we were looking for a place to stay, we were so glad we found a place large enough for us and my daughter's family. I way overpacked for the kitchen. Thelma thought of everything that one might need for a kitchen for cooking. We would definitely like to come back. We all had a good time. It was very kid-friendly, my grandkids really enjoyed playing with Thelma's new dog, Scout! We would highly recommend this place. It was in a perfect location to enjoy the river, whether to float, fish or swim!! We thought we lived in "God's country" in (the mountains in SE OK), but this place is equal in beauty and tranquility! Thank you so much, Thelma!
Thelma was very welcoming and accommodating. The only big issue is that we did not stay in the property that we booked. Thelma has a couple of rent spaces and she double booked the bunkhouse for what was supposed to be our stay there. We, instead stayed at the bungalow which was fine, but it was not the property we booked. There was not a king bed and the space was not as large as the bunkhouse. Luckily, it was just two of us but this could have been a disaster for our trip. If you stay with Thelma, I don't think you will be disappointed at all but make sure you communicate with her about which property you will be staying in. Once again, Thelma was very accommodating and helped us with everything we needed, but there was just a monumental oversight on her part in booking this property.
Although the listing was not the one that was advertised, we enjoyed our stay. A short drive to the heart of town and the 2 wonderful restaurants. The is very close and a short walk.
