About Charlotte Dewar

I was born and raised in Beijing, China. Graduated from Peking University in 1983 with a degree in English Literature. Upon graduation I became an English teacher at university. I met my American husband on campus. We have been living in US for 29 years. This exquisite property surrounded by natural wonders is our sanctuary. Tranquility, beauty and pure air calm the body and mind and uplift the soul...

Charlotte Dewar purchased this house in 2006

Why Charlotte Dewar chose Hilo District

This is one of the most beautiful homes in Hilo. If you love beauty, refinement and tranquility, this is the place!

What makes this house unique

Reeds Island where the house locates is an exclusive community between two volcano rivers. Beautiful homes and fine neighbors are embracing and loving. Tropical rain forests and wildlife lie in every direction. A walk on the island is a step into natural beauty. It's ten minutes walk to historic Hilo downtown where boutique shops, galleries, restaurants and Farmers Market line the streets. Beeches, parks and Japanese garden are minutes away.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our Hilo House experience was awesome. We loved the atmosphere of old houses and architecture. Fantastic bedrooms, you could hear the waterfall and birds at night. What it made fantastic were the details: fresh flowers in all rooms, the garden is maintained, the wooden floors, the marble baths, ... and as a passionate cook I highly appreciated good solingen knives (which is normally a deficit in most rented places), so I could cook breadfruit, taro and seafood from the local markets. As a party of three we enjoyed sitting on the terrace, plenty of room for all (would house parties up to 12-14 people, too)

The best place to stay on the Big Island!!!

  • 5 of 5

We are a group from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Tours seeing the wild birds on the Big Island. We had the best time in this grand and gracious house sitting by the Wailuku River and surrounded by lush tropical wildlife and gardens. The owner, Charlotte Dewar, hosted us and made everything so smooth and beautiful for our stay. The rooms are spacious with Ohia hardwood floor from 100 years ago. We roam around the house in large living room, garden lanai and the enjoyed two house banquet catered by a local company. Chef Dean Shigeoka cooked the best 5 course dinner for us. Call him if you need someone to come to the house and cook for you. 808-217-6401 or ajsonscaterning@gmail.com

We had such a wonderful time that many of us are planning to return with families and friends in the near future!

Reeds Island Hilo House

  • 5 of 5

The Hilo House on Reed Island is a 100 year historical home nestled in a quiet neighborhood minutes from town. The inside of the home has an older feel that the online pictures don't capture that brings you back a century in time. Outside, there is no way to capture the beauty of the surrounding plants, trees, river, etc. The fast flowing river along with the waterfall (approximately a 1000 feet away) provides a nice backdrop for sleeping at night. The biggest surprise is the Coqui frogs who are group at first thought were chirping birds. The house was clean and the only thing to note is the white towels in the home. The owner requests using cleaning wipes (provided) for removing soil, makeup, etc.

The town center has many things to offer including a farmer's / swap market where I'm sure one vendor was sad to see one of the women in our party leave :) Nearby beaches provide stunning views of sea turtles. KTA store provides reasonable prices and great service. Pineapples restaurant (http://www.pineappleshilo.com/) was the group's favorite restaurant with Hilo Bay Cafe (http://hilobaycafe.com/) coming a close second. Rainbow Falls (http://www.gohawaii.com/big-island/regions-neighborhoods/hilo/wailuku-state-park/) along with Boiling Pots (https://www.hawaii.com/big-island/attractions/boiling-pots-of-wailuku/) are a few minutes drive away and well worth investigation. If you are musically inclined, visit Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles ((http://www.hiloguitars.com/) which has fair prices and great service.

Consensus among the group is we would return to the Hilo House when vacationing on the big island. Abundant space, stunning views, friendly staff, etc. make Hilo House the place to stay.

Other things of interest:

Lava Hike (http://www.unrealhawaii.com/2013/01/hawaii-lava-hike/). Great views. It's a 8 mile round trip hike so recommend paying the $25 to rent a bike. Bring an extra light as the bike lights are not very powerful

Black Sand Beach (http://www.lovebigisland.com/big-island-beaches/punaluu/) - Black sands along with sea turtles. Ensure you walk to the concession stand as there is a picturesque pond behind it

Umauma Falls Ziplining (https://umaumaexperience.com/) - Fantsatic staff and nine ziplines (one 250 feet over the river and another almost a half mile long)

Spoonful Cafe in Keauu (https://www.facebook.com/Spoonful-Cafe-446946445381774/) - great food at reasonable prices

Owner's Response: We are thrilled to receive a thorough and very nice review on my house. Sounds like you truly picked up the spirit of the lovely Hilo town and the natural wonders of the Big Island. I am grateful you had such a good time to explore so much and took the time to share with me and other potential guests. I do hope you will return to my house with your families and friends in the near future. There is so much Aloha in our area from the lovely neighbors to the beautiful natural beings... Aloha! Beautiful home in a great location in Hilo that offers a unique experience. The grounds are well maintained and offer a nice getaway while still very close to the conveniences of downtown Hilo.

Great time with friends here

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 7-11 people in this house depending on the day (we're all in our mid-late 20s/early 30s) for a low-key bachelor party trip (mix of guys and girls). We loved it and were reluctant to leave at first because of how great we thought the house was...I could lounge around that place aaaaaall summer if I could! That being said, we're a pretty active group and drove all over the big island, but the Hilo House being our base was fantastic. :)

Pros:

- Great feel/atmosphere (it's got a plantation-y kinda feel, old school but with modern amenities)

- lovely rooms

- so many bathrooms (showers for all!!)

- beach umbrellas to borrow in the basement

- good contact with property owner/manager

- large dining room table

- great kitchen

- so many chairs

- river with small waterfall visible from backyard

- WiFi available

- Close to grocery stores/town

- The fact that there were 2 dryers was nice

Cons:

- Water pressure in the showers were pretty wimpy at times (that might have been because we were all showering at the same time though)

- No AC (but like I said, this is common in Hawaii and not a deal breaker--we were fine)

- No TV in main living space, it's tucked away in the basement---but who cares, we were in Hawaii with friends :)

- Basement smelled kinda musty, but it wasn't super horrible and none of us stayed down their anyway

NOTE: Be careful about those white towels. There's a charge if you get too much dirt on them, because they end up having to replace them. I suggest if you do the Green Sand beach on the southern part of the Big Island, like we did, that you try to wash off as much as you can before entering the house--which is what we should have done. lol. I don't know if there's a hose or something outside we could've used, but if there isn't then my suggestion to the Hilo House would be to maybe get an outdoor shower for people coming back from the beaches, or to clean off more before getting back inside. :) If there is one already, we didn't know about it.

Gracious and beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the beautiful reed's house with its elegant furniture and waterfall next door. It was wonderful being able to hear the water all night from our front room. The back rooms were quiet if you did not enjoy having a private waterfall. Well appointed kitchen and a grand old dining room took us back to old Hawaii.

Wonderful time at Hilo House

  • 5 of 5

I was lucky enough to stay here twice. Summer 2015 we had a wonderful time for 2 nights with our paddling team. When some of my family decided to visit me on Maui and wanted to go to Big Island to see Volcanoes park, I knew we had to stay here. This home is truly reminiscent of Old Hawaii, but with all the modern upgrades. We had 12 adults from 17 years old to 63 and never felt crowded. The home is spacious and relaxing. The dining room table seats everyone and was the center for fun dinners and card games. Our three night stay will go down in our Family Lore as a highlight.
