It is magical
Sandy beach on a clear lake. Thousands of acres around it of gorgeous conserved land.
I had never used homeaway before and was nervous about what to expect. This rental could not have been more perfect! It is tucked away in a small town in Rhode Island and is simply beautiful. You feel totally secluded and peaceful here but have the convenience of being a few miles from a pharmacy and Stop & Shop. The house was very clean with breathtaking views of the lake. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well-appointed and the air conditioning worked very well. The owner, Allison, was very helpful and responsive if I called her. The private beach was truly private. Except for a couple of fisherman floating by on canoe, we had the lake totally to ourselves. With the several watercraft available, beach fire pit for S'Mores fun, sand toys, gas grill and charcoal grill, there is plenty to do! Our 4 year old was in heaven, and so were we. We will absolutely be going back!
This summer we decided to change it up and rent this "lake" house instead of a beach house. It has it's own sand beach with a fire pit, dock and water toys (kayaks, canoe, etc.). The water is clean and, unlike most beach houses, it is quiet and the pond is not overly crowded nor are there motor boats. We used the fire pit once with the kids to make s'mores and that was a big hit. The house is situated on a rise with large windows overlooking the pond making for a pretty, relaxing view. Perfect for that morning cup o' joe or evening sunset with a glass of wine.
The downstairs has a kitchen that opens into a dining area adjacent to the windows overlooking the pond and a sitting area. There is an AC unit that cools the downstairs with ease and it was always comfortable regardless of how hot it was outside. There is also a washer/dryer in the kitchen which makes for convenient washes without trekking up/downstairs. The outside shower is comfy and helps keep the inside from getting too sandy/dirty. They just need a teapot to boil water.
The upstairs/2nd floor is spartan with three bedrooms and one full bath. The full bath has low water pressure, but is still functional. Each room has it's own window or portable AC unit that seemed to work fine. Our one criticism was the mattress in the master bedroom. It is a bit smaller than a true queen size as evidenced by our home sheets having a few inches to spare and the mattress itself was unusually soft and lumpy making it impossible to get a good night's sleep. This was one of the only reasons we would hesitate returning. Getting a decent night's sleep is not too much to ask for while on vacation. The rooms themselves are utilitarian, but that did not bother me. My wife was a little disappointed when she compared it to some more comfortable rooms we have stayed in on previous vacations with more amenities.
The somewhat isolated location was a plus for me, but my wife was not thrilled to have to drive 15-20 minutes to go grocery shopping, find a decent meal, etc. Again, all depends on what you want.
There is a note about the fence on the beach and the geese. At first we saw none. Then after a day trip we came back to find goose droppings all over the property and about 7 of them on the property, even though we had blocked the beach. We spent 30 minutes cleaning up so beware.
Bill was responsive to all our inquiries and was refreshingly more laid back compared to other property owners we have dealt with.
My husband and I stayed here with our 2 small children and it was absolutely perfect! There was something to do for all ages. Our biggest concern was finding a place that would be safe for our children to play and where we could relax. Well this was it! The beach provided crystal clear shallow water that our 2 year old could run in and out of while our toddler crawled in and out. Fire pits on the beach at night brought each day to a nice end. The house was cozy and met all of our needs. We will definitely be back!
Us and our kids (2 and 6) absolutely loved every minute staying here. We made full use of the canoe, paddleboards and kayaks and the kids were up and in the water by 7 am each day. What an amazing view to wake up to!! It really was a magical place. Gave us the feeling of being completely out of the way yet still close enough where we could have friends visit for the day. They were all amazed at perfect the spot was for the kids. Quick drive to the Roger Williams Zoo for the day. We will definitely look to stay here again.
This home was the perfect setting for a week of relaxation. Our kids are 2, 8, and 11, and they loved swimming, boating, hiking, and visiting nearby attractions like the Mystic Aquarium and the Westerly beaches. The house is clean, comfortable, and full of beauty. We look forward to returning!
This place was wonderful, there was something for everyone here. My kids had a blast. The only problem I had were the beds, the queen bed was extremely uncomfortable, had two rivets in it, we ended up going home a day early because of it. The full size bed squeaked everytime my daughter rolled over. Other than that, I would highly recommend this place indeed, just would update the mattresses.
The restored 1850 farm house is directy on Wincheck Pond. The water is crystal clear and our sandy beach is private and wonderful. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of Nature Conservancy,Audubon , State of RI and Boy Scout land. The hiking is gorgeous , the fishing fantastic and the village fun and friendly. We are 1/2 mile from Ell Pond, a National Natural Landmark. This preserve has one of the most strikingly beautiful hikes in Rhode Island. Deer, mink, otter, red fox, raccoon, opossum, cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hare, grey squirrel, red squirrel, ruffed grouse, wild turkey, woodcock, owl and hawk all are common sights at Ell Pond - a testimony to its pristine nature. The bobcat and coyote have also been reported in the area. Be ready to climb up and down many steep hills and rocky slopes before returning to The Lake House for a swim!
