This beautiful one bedroom, one bath English basement apartment is perfectly situated on one of the nicest blocks in Washington DC’s fabulous Capitol Hill neighborhood. This luxurious, owner-renovated and recently owner-occupied apartment is perfect for both vacation rentals and temporary executive housing. The location is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
It is perfect for a single or couple, a family with one or two children or an executive, lobbyist or politician who requires immediate access to the Capitol, the House Office buildings, the Capitol Hill Club, the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill or the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Four current congressmen live on this very same block.
The renovated apartment combines luxurious, high-end finishes with the very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC located just outside the door. It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall's monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and Interstates 395/695.
The very large living and dining room area (approx. 22 x 15) includes a separate dining area with a large round table and four chairs which can also double as the perfect spot for your computer or home office. The living room includes a brand-new pullout queen sofa bed (not a folding bed so there is no uncomfortable metal bar or springs), two leather club chairs, leather ottoman and a large coffee table. The 37 inch LG LCD HDTV includes Comcast Xfinity cable, a Blu-Ray DVD player and a direct connection for your Apple devices; high-speed wireless internet access is included at no extra charge.
The kitchen is perfect for both snacking and serious cooking. A bar-height counter separates this space from the living room. Both sides of the kitchen feature custom wood cabinetry and gorgeous green granite countertops. The stainless steel appliances include a two burner Kitchen Aid electric cooktop, GE Profile Advantium microwave / convection oven combination, Bosch dishwasher and undercounter Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer with ice maker. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, glassware, dishes and utensils (eight settings) and other necessities including a toaster and coffee maker (a complete coffee and tea service is included).
A large bedroom (approx. 12 x 14) includes a queen size bed with a new Serta perfect sleeper mattress and plenty of high-end linens, sheets, pillows and blankets. A generous closet provides custom built-in shelves and plenty of hanging and storage space.
The bathroom features beautiful chrome Waterworks fixtures and a large slate tile shower with frameless glass door, large sink with granite top and custom slate floor tile as well as plenty of storage for toiletries and other necessities. A separate laundry area with a full-size Asko front-loading washer and dryer, granite counter top workspace, iron and ironing board is located in the bathroom.
Finally, I can provide you with a residential parking permit at no charge. This allows you to park in any available street parking spot as if you actually lived in the neighborhood. Street parking is almost always available on our same block and is usually available within just a couple houses in either direction of ours. The vast majority of residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood do not have private or off-street parking as most of these houses were built before cars! This is essentially the only trade-off in exchange for staying in a historic neighborhood where you can walk to so many things. A suburban location might have street parking but they probably won't have a Metro station 1/2 a block away and the Capitol building 2 blocks away!
I purchased this property to be my primary residence in Washington DC. I lovingly and professionally restored this property to bring out the charm of this gorgeous historic rowhouse while including modern 21st century luxury features. I lived in this exact same apartment for several years until moving out of town recently.
Bill Powers purchased this apartment in 2002
The location is unbeatable and the block is gorgeous! I wanted something that was quintessentially Capitol Hill, in the heart of this historic neighborhood and on a tree-lined block with other beautiful homes.
Quite simply, the access from this house is too good to be true! I can easily walk to dozens of restaurants, bars and shops as well as many of the nation's finest monuments, museums and memorials. The Capital South Metro station is half a block away and can have me in most other parts of DC within 15-20 minutes or at the airport (DCA) in 30 minutes. When I need to drive, the house is just three blocks from the freeway (I-395).
This rental was a good choice for us because it was an attractive space in an excellent location. The neighborhood was nice, and we always felt safe walking around in the evening or from the metro station. There are lots of young professionals jogging and walking in the area, no doubt due to the proximity of the metro (half a block or so from the rental) and Capitol Hill (an uphill walk of some 2-3 long blocks). There are a few restaurants around the block, none of which were noteworthy (though we did get carryout one tired evening from the Talay Thai, and it was good if not exceptional). The Mexican place was always packed, but we found it just okay. While I'm sure that there are fantastic restaurants all over DC, by the end of a long day it's nice to stay closer to "home," so we were really impressed by the numerous great restaurants 8-9 blocks away (or one quick metro stop) on Pennsylvania Ave. in the Eastern Market area. Barrel is a trendy sort of bourbon bar with upscale small plates and burgers, while Montmartre is a wonderful French restaurant where one can eat outside on a warm evening. We were also happy to find some closer spots with good eats, including the excellent organic sandwich place, Pret-a-manger, and the burger/pizza/French bistro trio (all in a row and owned by Top Chef Spike Mendelson) about 4 blocks away. Around the same area is a small convenience store, where we went for milk, coffee, and other essentials (rather than use the grocery store app that others recommend). Now for the rental itself: great bed, big bathroom, plenty of nice towels, great kitchen, nice cable set-up and reliable wifi. A good bed is a deal breaker for me, but this one passed the test. We had a few minor quibbles: only two rolls of TP for 5 nights, and no washcloths or bar soap? But if you have noisy neighbors upstairs, as we did on our first two nights, you won't be happy. We heard him on his phone and walking back and forth on the hardwood floors. That said, the owner responded immediately when informed about this, and he spoke with the loud, big-foot guy right away about the quiet policy. Fortunately, the loud guy checked out after two nights. After that, all was good in the hood. The place was clean, well maintained, and comfortable. We recommend it.
We could not have asked for a better location. This cozy apartment is literally one block from a Metro station and a couple blocks from the Capitol Building. The neighborhood is clean, safe . . . a true pleasure to stroll around in. The apartment is warm and comfortable, with lots of little extras that make it a home away from home. The well appointed kitchen had every type of stemware, cookware and gadget I have at home, which was perfect for whipping up quick bites when we didn't feel like going out. Good size rooms, nicely furnished and decorated. We enjoyed the WiFi and cable t.v. after long days of combing the museums and sights. The owner has all the logistics streamlined so it's easy to find, access and enjoy. It is a charming, old building so the upstairs noise does travel. This is a minor inconvenience given all the other awesome qualities of this unit; bring ear plugs just in case. I highly recommend this unit, and would not hesitate to stay here again.
We recently just spent 5 nights in this wonderful apartment. It is around the corner from the Capital South Metro and close enough to walk to the Capital Building and Museums. There are couple great little restaurants in the next block with very good prices. The apartment had everything we needed, full kitchen and washing machine was very good to have. We were very happy with our decision to stay here over a hotel. Would love to stay here again one day.
We recently returned from our stay in this great apartment. As others have said, the location of this apartment is perfect. It is as close to the House of Representative office buildings at the Capitol as it appears in the photos. The Capitol South Metro station is even closer than I realized prior to our arrival from my studying maps and reading descriptions. The walk to and from the Metro was super quick, easy and safe. The convenient location of this apartment cannot be overstated. We actually drove into the city and Bill arranged a temporary parking pass for us for street parking. We felt completely comfortable and safe with our car parked on this street. We also felt completely comfortable and safe walking to and from the Metro and even explored the Capitol grounds at night. The pullout bed, as described, did not have a bar down the middle and was quite comfortable for our "tween"-age boys. The kitchen was perfect. The washer and dryer on the property were great benefits. As others have mentioned we found a surprising supply of amenities like teas, laundry detergent, shampoo, etc. Since we drove into the city, we took a quick drive to an area where there was an Aldi, Safeway, Dollar Tree and other stores to get supplies for the week. We kept commenting while we were there, how great it was to come "home" after a long day of sight seeing and be able to relax on the couch and armchairs and not be in a hotel room having to lounge/lie/sit on beds the whole time. We loved being able to make breakfasts and dinners. Our original thought in planning this trip was to get a hotel room a Metro ride out of the city. We never once regretted our decision to rent this apartment in lieu of getting a hotel room. The financial savings of not having to eat out every meal was significant as was the time savings with not being a 30-45 minute Metro ride one way in and out of town. Also, not having daily parking fees as hotels charge was great too. We were cozy and comfortable in this well appointed apartment and loved the added benefit of teaching our children how to navigate a city of this size by "living" in a neighborhood like a local. Bill, the owner, was a pleasure to work with and timely in his communication to us prior to our arrival. He also was only a text/phone call away throughout our stay. I will definitely recommend this property to friends and will stay here again if ever given the opportunity to return DC.
My wife and two boys had our first family trip to DC and it was a total success. The apartment's location, close to the Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court was perfect for us. The basement level was just the right size for our family and Bill was great to work with. He met us at the apartment and showed us around the place when we first arrived. As stated in other posts, there were many items already at the apartment, which was a appreciated. Additionally, past guests left maps, playbills and brochures for many places and events. I recommend this place if you are looking for a small but well kept place to rest your feet after a long day of sightseeing across the Nation's Capitol.
As others have stated, the location of this basement apartment is absolutely perfect! It was a very short walk the metro station, within walking distance of the Capitol and close to some great restaurants. My husband, myself and our 15 year old had plenty of space and found the beds to be quite comfy.
Another interesteding plus is that this rental had several items provided that I never expected or found in another VRBO rental. A hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and laundry detergent were all supplied when we were there. Also, a good supply of paper towels and toilet paper. These seem like small things, but they are greatly appreciated. I agree with others about how well supplied the kitchen is, too.
Overall, we greatly enjoyed our week here and would stay here again without hesitation!
