This beautiful one bedroom, one bath English basement apartment is perfectly situated on one of the nicest blocks in Washington DC’s fabulous Capitol Hill neighborhood. This luxurious, owner-renovated and recently owner-occupied apartment is perfect for both vacation rentals and temporary executive housing. The location is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
It is perfect for a single or couple, a family with one or two children or an executive, lobbyist or politician who requires immediate access to the Capitol, the House Office buildings, the Capitol Hill Club, the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill or the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Four current congressmen live on this very same block.
The renovated apartment combines luxurious, high-end finishes with the very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC located just outside the door. It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall's monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and Interstates 395/695.
The very large living and dining room area (approx. 22 x 15) includes a separate dining area with a large round table and four chairs which can also double as the perfect spot for your computer or home office. The living room includes a brand-new pullout queen sofa bed (not a folding bed so there is no uncomfortable metal bar or springs), two leather club chairs, leather ottoman and a large coffee table. The 37 inch LG LCD HDTV includes Comcast Xfinity cable, a Blu-Ray DVD player and a direct connection for your Apple devices; high-speed wireless internet access is included at no extra charge.
The kitchen is perfect for both snacking and serious cooking. A bar-height counter separates this space from the living room. Both sides of the kitchen feature custom wood cabinetry and gorgeous green granite countertops. The stainless steel appliances include a two burner Kitchen Aid electric cooktop, GE Profile Advantium microwave / convection oven combination, Bosch dishwasher and undercounter Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer with ice maker. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, glassware, dishes and utensils (eight settings) and other necessities including a toaster and coffee maker (a complete coffee and tea service is included).
A large bedroom (approx. 12 x 14) includes a queen size bed with a new Serta perfect sleeper mattress and plenty of high-end linens, sheets, pillows and blankets. A generous closet provides custom built-in shelves and plenty of hanging and storage space.
The bathroom features beautiful chrome Waterworks fixtures and a large slate tile shower with frameless glass door, large sink with granite top and custom slate floor tile as well as plenty of storage for toiletries and other necessities. A separate laundry area with a full-size Asko front-loading washer and dryer, granite counter top workspace, iron and ironing board is located in the bathroom.
Finally, I can provide you with a residential parking permit at no charge. This allows you to park in any available street parking spot as if you actually lived in the neighborhood. Street parking is almost always available on our same block and is usually available within just a couple houses in either direction of ours. The vast majority of residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood do not have private or off-street parking as most of these houses were built before cars! This is essentially the only trade-off in exchange for staying in a historic neighborhood where you can walk to so many things. A suburban location might have street parking but they probably won't have a Metro station 1/2 a block away and the Capitol building 2 blocks away!
I purchased this property to be my primary residence in Washington DC. I lovingly and professionally restored this property to bring out the charm of this gorgeous historic rowhouse while including modern 21st century luxury features. I lived in this exact same apartment for several years until moving out of town recently.
Bill Powers purchased this apartment in 2002
The location is unbeatable and the block is gorgeous! I wanted something that was quintessentially Capitol Hill, in the heart of this historic neighborhood and on a tree-lined block with other beautiful homes.
Quite simply, the access from this house is too good to be true! I can easily walk to dozens of restaurants, bars and shops as well as many of the nation's finest monuments, museums and memorials. The Capital South Metro station is half a block away and can have me in most other parts of DC within 15-20 minutes or at the airport (DCA) in 30 minutes. When I need to drive, the house is just three blocks from the freeway (I-395).
Pro's - The location is exactly as described, you walk out and look up the street and there is the Capitol. All of the Museums & Monuments are within walking distance as long as you are in decent shape. If not, the Capitol Metro stop is literally around the corner and can get you anywhere you want to go.
Bill was very accommodating to our requests. We needed to check in a day early and he was able to make it happen. We had a few minor issues like not enough towels, broken toaster, & trouble with the pull-out couch. Bill worked to resolve them all quickly and to our satisfaction. Compared to other people we have rented from he was way above the rest on his level of customer service.
The apartment has everything you need. Things like trash bags & paper towels are provided which is different than most other rentals and very helpful. Another nice difference is that he doesn't ask you to take out the trash, strip the beds, put away all dishes, etc. This was a big time saver for us on our early morning departure time. We went straight to a rental in the Outer Banks and when we checked out there we had to strip all beds, take out the trash, put all the towels and linens in special bags, have all dishes clean & put away, and they even requested that we wipe down the refrigerator & sweep. To me, that is what the cleaning fee & linen fee is for. It is nice that Bill agrees!
A parking pass is there for you to use and we were able to park on the street almost directly in front of the house.
The location feels very safe!
Con's - The apartment needs a bit of TLC. Nothing that would stop me from renting again but the carpet is worn, towel bars need repaired, and some other minor things.
What everyone else says about the upstairs neighbors is true. You hear everything. We had two different families above us over the course of the week and you hear footsteps, chairs moving, doors shutting, etc.. Once again, this was not enough to keep us from recommending or renting here again.
The pull out couch is not very comfortable (most aren't). Our two boys were not fans but they made it through the week.
A mirror, possibly on the dresser, would be helpful. When you have four people using one bathroom an additional mirror would come in handy when getting ready.
Overall this property is great for people wishing to see the sites and have close proximity to everything!
We enjoyed our stay at this apartment. Location is great, just a half block to Capitol office buildings, and in a safe neighborhood. We liked the feel and vibe of staying in DC neighborhood and felt more like locals than tourists. There are a few restaurants only a block away and we even had pizza delivered one night.
Street parking is free with permit provided and readily available. The guests who stayed above us left a few days into our trip so we were able to park in the driveway the rest of the stay which was even better.
Apartment is comfortable and updated. General supplies i.e. coffee filters, dish soap, toilet paper, garbage bags are well stocked. We didn't need anything.
Bill, owner, is very easy to communicate with.
The only reason we didn't give this place 5 stars is we had a couple minor complaints/concerns. 1. The guests above must've had a toddler who liked to run because we could hear him running constantly. I think because the building is old is not very well insulated which made the footsteps loud. 2. There was no headboard on the bed. It was in the room but not installed. Bed was not up against wall. As such, we kept dropping our pillows during the night.
Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would recommend as a great place to stay while visiting DC.
Our family of four enjoyed the convenience and amenities of this property. We were within a couple blocks of the Metro station, the US Capitol, and the Library of Congress. The apartment was stocked with dish soap, cleaners, paper towels, and other similar items you wouldn't expect. The kitchen was stocked with two coffee makers, sufficient pots and pans, and a washer and dryer. We had plenty of room and were extremely comfortable. We appreciate the check-out expectations because we got out the door quickly without having to clean every item first. We liked living near the Metro stop but not on it. Bill suggested that we visit the Library of Congress and we are thankful for that recommendation as it was a gorgeous building. We arrived on Saturday and did not drive during our entire week, which was our goal. We found it incredibly convenient to get around town and thought it was great to be so close to the Metro. After a busy day of site-seeing, we enjoyed coming home to the comfort of our nearby space.
A couple of complaints, which Bill is aware, are that the upstairs neighbors were quite noisy without regard to our continual requests to discontinue the toddler foot races, and the dishwasher was of no use. We informed Bill of these as we came upon them and he addressed them as they arose, although both issues did not have full resolve during our stay there. The silverware had caked-on blotches of dish-washing liquid which indicated the dishwasher had been broken for some time. As a result, we hand-washed the dishes that we wanted clean, which isn't a desired task during a vacation. Our neighbors piped down only at late-night, so conversing around our dinner table was still an issue. I'd say these were the only drawbacks to our entire trip as we had a lovely time during our week-long stay there. We would stay here again regardless, and especially if we could determine our upstairs neighbors would be respectful.
very nice property with a great location
remodeled with everything you need for a great stay
owner communicated well. As others have stated, you can hear every thing from upstairs
but didn't bother us at all
Everything was exactly like the pictures in the listing. Small but for two people it's not a problem. Great location, within two blocks from the Capitol Building and less to the closest Metro station. There are restaurants around the block,Mexican,Thai, Subway and a really nice Pub with excellent food. Bill checked everything 30 minutes before our arrival and had the lights on for us. We had a very nice stay and would definitely recommend this place if a couple is looking for someplace within walking distance of the sights. We didn't touch our car from the moment we got there until we left.
This apartment was in a good location.
The condition of the apartment was fair, it is in need of some upkeep.
Upon our arrival the place was in poor condition, it had not been cleaned. Bill was responsive to our needs, he sent the crew the next morning. He made accommodations for the broken dryer.
I would recommend this for location and good service. It is not the place to stay if you are particular about details as it has not been well maintained.
You will not find a better Capitol Hill location! The very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC are located just outside the door! This apartment is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol!
It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall and its monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and it also has easy access to and from Interstate 395.
