About Steve Clark

This house was built to accommodate 2 golf foursomes and has been a family retreat for many years. With the family scattered throughout the southeast the house stays empty much of the year which is why we have opened our doors to you. We know you will love the peace and serenity of Rocky Acres Retreat.

Steve Clark purchased this house in 1987

Why Steve Clark chose Stone Mountain State Park

The house sits on 1 acre and we also own another 5 acres adjacent to it. Our back yard is in fact a part of Stone Mountain State Park and across the gravel private drive are another 10 acres of undeveloped private property. So you are literally surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods where the only neighbors are the wildlife. We are only a short walk from the Blue Ridge Parkway so some of the most beautiful scenery in the country can be seen from our deck or just a short walk down the driveway. We know you will enjoy the peaceful mountain life. Your only neighbors are the wildlife. With 2400 square feet of living space your family and friends can enjoy gathering together and not feel cramped with plenty of seating space so everyone can spread out and truly relax.

What makes this house unique

Stone Mountain State Park is our back yard. You are literally surrounded by Stone Mountain State Park. Walk south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Stone Mountain Lookout. The park is only a 10 minute drive from the house. 10 miles down the Parkway is Doughton Park with a 6,000-acre landscape of open meadows and pioneer cabins and some of the best hiking around. Sparta, which is only 9 miles down the road has some of the best bluegrass music in North Carolina at the Alleghany Jubilee. There are over thirty wineries within a 30 mile radius of our house. Just pick one or several to enjoy the day wine tasting. Antiquing is another activity you can enjoy. Include antiquing with wine tasting and have a blast. Down in Sparta is the New River State Park and New River Campground where you can enjoy the cool waters on a canoe or kayaking trip. Five golf courses are close by too. Get in 18 at either Roaring Gap Golf Course, Olde Beau Golf Club, Deer Creek Golf Course, Stone Mountain Golf Club and High Meadows Golf & Country Club. Buy some deer corn at the local store and place some in the center island in the driveway and sit on the deck and watch the deer come up to feed. The wrap around deck is large enough to put out the corn hole game (provided) and heat up the competition or just sit on one of the eight rocking chairs and enjoy the scenery. On those cold rainy days curl up by the stone gas log fireplace or enjoy one of the 200 DVD's on the 40 inch HDTV with ROKU and WiFi. The full kitchen is a cooks delight with everything you need to make a cake or pie or whip up that old family favorite meal. This is the perfect place to get away from it all and experience some country living. The phone won't ring unless you give someone the number and it is so quiet outside you can hear the turkey gobbling in the woods and watch as the deer stroll by the house. You won't find a more peaceful retreat with so many amenities so close

Notes:
Visit 'http://sparta-nc.com/' for the Sparta Chamber of Commerce web site to keep up to date with local happenings. YMCA Camp Cheerio is 12 miles away just around the corner. Call for facilities availability. For the runner or cyclist...The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most desired and scenic routes you will ever run or ride. Go 1.5 miles south on the Parkway to the Stone Mountain Lookout. Keep going for almost 6 miles and you'll run to Air Bellows Lookout. Doughton Park is 10 miles away. Although Stone Mountain State Park is in our back yard the facilities for the park are only a short 15 minute drive away. Go 50 miles and you'll been in Boone. The Virginia Creeper "Rails to Trails" is an hours drive away. There are horse riding facilities and many other amenities too numerous to mention. Please ask and we will find the information.

Great place for meeting friends

  • 5 of 5

Our party (4 adults, 2 kids) found this to be a great place to meet for a weekend. Fire pit in front yard is perfect for roasting s'mores and rocking chairs on deck were ideal for conversation. Only issue we had was the directions - the ones in the app lacked the freeway details we needed (though the ones sent to us by mail included them - I just didn't open them before we got there, assuming the package only contained the keys). Cleaning fee is a little pricey for a one-night stay, but otherwise they had everything we needed.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed all there was about Rocky Acres Retreat. It is a great meeting place in the woods. We hope you enjoyed the view from the deck and the fire pit sounded perfect with the cool weather you had. We try to provide all the information you need about the house including directions and maybe those directions get buried in the back page so from here on out we will provide advanced notification of where to find the directions, before you get to the house ;-) Cleanliness is our top priority. We want to make sure that the house is 100 percent ready for our next guests. We appreciate the guests that help us maintain a quality experience. Please come back and see us and spend a little more time exploring the area.

Beautiful Property and very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Comfortably fit 8 of us and our long haired chocolate mini dachshund. We were in the area for a wedding so didn't get to enjoy everything about this lovely getaway. Would have been a great destination all by itself. Great communication from owner. Highly recommend it!

Owner's Response: I hope you saw our family picture with all of our mini dachshunds. We love our fur babies and are happy that we can accommodate families that care for theirs as much as we do ours. Come back and visit us any time and explore the area around the house and Blue Ridge Parkway.

Most relaxing place to be!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year ( teacher group of friends) renting Rocky Acres and it was wonderful once again! Steve is so good to work with. The cabin and land around it is beautiful! This year we fed the deer with deer corn we bought on the way up and were thrilled to see a mom and baby several times enjoying the food. The cabin has everything you need for a vacation! The view from the den and deck is so beautiful. This property is easy to get to and close to many things. Hope to make this a yearly tradition. Thanks Steve for sharing this beautiful place!

Owner's Response: We always enjoy having you guys come back and see us. I'm so glad you were able to see some deer. I heard a Turkey in the woods a couple weeks ago so hopefully we'll get a little flock of Turkey back. And doesn't that view stop you every time you walk by it? We are always making improvements to Rocky Acres Retreat so come see us again real soon. You are always very welcome!

Team Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This location was perfect for our group. We were hiking in the area and then heading to Wilmington, NC. Great location on the way! Sunset was amazing off the porch! We were able to cook dinner for 10 and enjoyed a great evening of games and team building! Very easy and comfortable. I will definitely go back with my family & friends!

Fun Family Get Away Location

  • 4 of 5

This cabin was very comfortable and met all our needs for our family of 8. The large kitchen had lots of cabinets and counter space and was stocked with every single item you could look for (including the rolling pin!) and all dishes, pans, silverware, utensils and appliances were in great shape. We arrived on Wednesday and left on Sunday and did not eat out at all so having a great cooking space was important. We didn't skip a beat when it came to preparing our usual spread on Thanksgiving day, requiring only that we bring our own food supplies! The bedrooms were all comfortable spaces and baths were well maintained too. The property privacy and sunset views were superb! We especially enjoyed the rocking chairs and corn hole on the huge and well maintained deck. Asthetics indoors were okay but not superb as furniture is dated but very comfortable. Need to stretch main level carpet and clean it. I would recommend this to friends and we would go again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the comments. We make upgrades and updates to the house all the time so look forward to hardwood floors upstairs to replace the carpets next year and we hope to get some new furniture too but the sectional, although dated, was just purchased 4 years ago from a furniture store that was going our of business and had been in the back of their warehouse for just a many years. So come visit us again next year and hopefully we will have these updates completed. And I have been planning to stretch the carpeting so now I'll have to get around to it. Again, Thank you!

HIDDEN JEWEL

  • 5 of 5

This well equipped, spacious and lovely cabin has everything. It is the most secluded and quiet cabin we have every stayed in. The location is perfect for being close to Parkway, Stone Mt. Park and within an hour drive to West Jefferson. Can't Wait to Return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind review. We too love the “Serenity” of the house and are so happy to know the owners of all the property surrounding us so we can make sure we stay secluded. We do our best to make sure everything in the house and amenities are up to everyone’s standards and we are always making improvements and updates so everyone is comfortable staying with us at Rocky Acres Retreat. We are so glad you enjoyed all there was and look forward to your return.
