About Steve Clark

This house was built to accommodate 2 golf foursomes and has been a family retreat for many years. With the family scattered throughout the southeast the house stays empty much of the year which is why we have opened our doors to you. We know you will love the peace and serenity of Rocky Acres Retreat.

Steve Clark purchased this house in 1987

Why Steve Clark chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

The house sits on 1 acre and we also own another 5 acres adjacent to it. Our back yard is in fact a part of Stone Mountain State Park and across the gravel private drive are another 10 acres of undeveloped private property. So you are literally surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods where the only neighbors are the wildlife. We are only a short walk from the Blue Ridge Parkway so some of the most beautiful scenery in the country can be seen from our deck or just a short walk down the driveway. We know you will enjoy the peaceful mountain life. Your only neighbors are the wildlife. With 2400 square feet of living space your family and friends can enjoy gathering together and not feel cramped with plenty of seating space so everyone can spread out and truly relax.

What makes this house unique

Stone Mountain State Park is our back yard. You are literally surrounded by Stone Mountain State Park. Walk south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Stone Mountain Lookout. The park is only a 10 minute drive from the house. 10 miles down the Parkway is Doughton Park with a 6,000-acre landscape of open meadows and pioneer cabins and some of the best hiking around. Sparta, which is only 9 miles down the road has some of the best bluegrass music in North Carolina at the Alleghany Jubilee. There are over thirty wineries within a 30 mile radius of our house. Just pick one or several to enjoy the day wine tasting. Antiquing is another activity you can enjoy. Include antiquing with wine tasting and have a blast. Down in Sparta is the New River State Park and New River Campground where you can enjoy the cool waters on a canoe or kayaking trip. Five golf courses are close by too. Get in 18 at either Roaring Gap Golf Course, Olde Beau Golf Club, Deer Creek Golf Course, Stone Mountain Golf Club and High Meadows Golf & Country Club. Buy some deer corn at the local store and place some in the center island in the driveway and sit on the deck and watch the deer come up to feed. The wrap around deck is large enough to put out the corn hole game (provided) and heat up the competition or just sit on one of the eight rocking chairs and enjoy the scenery. On those cold rainy days curl up by the stone gas log fireplace or enjoy one of the 200 DVD's on the 40 inch HDTV with ROKU and WiFi. The full kitchen is a cooks delight with everything you need to make a cake or pie or whip up that old family favorite meal. This is the perfect place to get away from it all and experience some country living. The phone won't ring unless you give someone the number and it is so quiet outside you can hear the turkey gobbling in the woods and watch as the deer stroll by the house. You won't find a more peaceful retreat with so many amenities so close

Girls Getaway Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Some women wanted to catch up since we no longer all work together. This was the Perfect place. Serenity is definitely the right description. The place was very clean and well accommodating. We had everything we needed including nothing but the sounds of nature. There was a lot of information about things to do in the area, which were most helpful in making plans for each day. As suggested, Circle L was a good place to eat (if you blink you will miss it-LOL). Stone Mountain was great for a little waterfall hike and picnic. Then just relaxing on the deck in those wooden rocking chairs to start the mornings and end the day. Nature watching-- at its finest-- especially on the parkway early morning and evening. Deer, deer and more deer-- but don't forget about rabbits and birds too.

Secluded

  • 4 of 5

If you like seclusion and peace and quite, then this is the place to go.

Everything was very good except for the A/C. The downstairs stayed cool

but it didn't cool the upstairs very well. It is well suited for several small

families to stay together. Lots of beds and bathrooms.

Owner's Response: We apologize for the heat. We've been up in July when we have had the heat on and it seems like we've rarely turned the air on. I don't know if the temperatures were unusual up there this time of year but it seems like the 80's are a bit unusual. We hope things weren't too uncomfortable for your stay. Come visit us again when the temps cool down a bit. You are always welcome back.

Very enjoyable stay.

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed our vacation at this house. We found it very clean and welcoming. It lived up to its billing of providing serenity, yet it is conveniently located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, not far from Sparta. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely return.

Great trip!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed staying here! Steve was absolutely wonderful from the moment I booked the trip until the very end. Very accommodating, very informative, and incredibly generous. I would rent a house from him again in a heartbeat!

As for the house, it was clean, fully stocked, and perfect for what we were looking for. If I had to think of any complaints, it would be that there isn't really any fishing close by ... But, there were fabulous neighbors down the road that let us use their pond to fish, so even that worked out!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review. We don't fish much but I believe the best fishing time is the fall or early spring when the weather is cooler. Stone Mountain State Park or New River State Park advertise fishing so if you do come back maybe you could explore that. I will do a little research to find out more about fishing in the area. You guys were great guests and I appreciated your communications to help me understand your needs. I wish we could have found a better fishing spot. Maybe next time. You guys are always welcome back.

Decided to come back!!

  • 5 of 5

The first time we went we stayed with about 10 friends. This time we just took my parents for Mother's Day. We had a wonderful time! He could see the beautiful mountains above the trees from the front porch which became my phone screensaver.

We went hiking twice. Once down to the bottom of the mountain to see the waterfall at the ground level and once to the top. Wow, what an awesome location! Steve is always very first class and accommodating!

After the hike we wanted to hang out and there are tons of DVDs (and board games) to choose from. We got to watch Gladiator for the first time in a long time.

Another great benefit is you don't have to bring anything for the kitchen. They have everything you'd possibly need in there!!

We can definitely see this as a place we will frequent many times in the future, especially as we start a family. I love how my parents pointed out that while it's very nice, spacious, well decorated, and clean on the inside you don't feel like you're going to break anything at the same time. It was a wonderful place to go! Thanks again!!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you came back and that you took advantage of all there is to do. That hike down to the bottom of the mountain is a beautiful one and a brutal one. We're glad you made it back up the hill. ;-) Did you get to the waterfall? You guys are super guests and are always welcome back. We try to make improvements all the time so our guests feel like they are at home and we believe we are getting close. Having everything you need is part of feeling at home and you expressed that feeling. that hike down the hill is awesome in May when everything is in bloom. We look forward to your next stay.

Notes:
Visit 'http://sparta-nc.com/' for the Sparta Chamber of Commerce web site to keep up to date with local happenings. YMCA Camp Cheerio is 12 miles away just around the corner. Call for facilities availability. For the runner or cyclist...The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most desired and scenic routes you will ever run or ride. Go 1.5 miles south on the Parkway to the Stone Mountain Lookout. Keep going for almost 6 miles and you'll run to Air Bellows Lookout. Doughton Park is 10 miles away. Although Stone Mountain State Park is in our back yard the facilities for the park are only a short 15 minute drive away. Go 50 miles and you'll been in Boone. The Virginia Creeper "Rails to Trails" is an hours drive away. There are horse riding facilities and many other amenities too numerous to mention. Please ask and we will find the information.
