About Steve Clark

This house was built to accommodate 2 golf foursomes and has been a family retreat for many years. With the family scattered throughout the southeast the house stays empty much of the year which is why we have opened our doors to you. We know you will love the peace and serenity of Rocky Acres Retreat.

Steve Clark purchased this house in 1987

Why Steve Clark chose Sparta

The house sits on 1 acre and we also own another 5 acres adjacent to it. Our back yard is in fact a part of Stone Mountain State Park and across the gravel private drive are another 10 acres of undeveloped private property. So you are literally surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods where the only neighbors are the wildlife. We are only a short walk from the Blue Ridge Parkway so some of the most beautiful scenery in the country can be seen from our deck or just a short walk down the driveway. We know you will enjoy the peaceful mountain life. Your only neighbors are the wildlife. With 2400 square feet of living space your family and friends can enjoy gathering together and not feel cramped with plenty of seating space so everyone can spread out and truly relax.

What makes this house unique

Stone Mountain State Park is our back yard. You are literally surrounded by Stone Mountain State Park. Walk south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Stone Mountain Lookout. The park is only a 10 minute drive from the house. 10 miles down the Parkway is Doughton Park with a 6,000-acre landscape of open meadows and pioneer cabins and some of the best hiking around. Sparta, which is only 9 miles down the road has some of the best bluegrass music in North Carolina at the Alleghany Jubilee. There are over thirty wineries within a 30 mile radius of our house. Just pick one or several to enjoy the day wine tasting. Antiquing is another activity you can enjoy. Include antiquing with wine tasting and have a blast. Down in Sparta is the New River State Park and New River Campground where you can enjoy the cool waters on a canoe or kayaking trip. Five golf courses are close by too. Get in 18 at either Roaring Gap Golf Course, Olde Beau Golf Club, Deer Creek Golf Course, Stone Mountain Golf Club and High Meadows Golf & Country Club. Buy some deer corn at the local store and place some in the center island in the driveway and sit on the deck and watch the deer come up to feed. The wrap around deck is large enough to put out the corn hole game (provided) and heat up the competition or just sit on one of the eight rocking chairs and enjoy the scenery. On those cold rainy days curl up by the stone gas log fireplace or enjoy one of the 200 DVD's on the 40 inch HDTV with ROKU and WiFi. The full kitchen is a cooks delight with everything you need to make a cake or pie or whip up that old family favorite meal. This is the perfect place to get away from it all and experience some country living. The phone won't ring unless you give someone the number and it is so quiet outside you can hear the turkey gobbling in the woods and watch as the deer stroll by the house. You won't find a more peaceful retreat with so many amenities so close

Notes:
Visit 'http://sparta-nc.com/' for the Sparta Chamber of Commerce web site to keep up to date with local happenings. YMCA Camp Cheerio is 12 miles away just around the corner. Call for facilities availability. For the runner or cyclist...The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most desired and scenic routes you will ever run or ride. Go 1.5 miles south on the Parkway to the Stone Mountain Lookout. Keep going for almost 6 miles and you'll run to Air Bellows Lookout. Doughton Park is 10 miles away. Although Stone Mountain State Park is in our back yard the facilities for the park are only a short 15 minute drive away. Go 50 miles and you'll been in Boone. The Virginia Creeper "Rails to Trails" is an hours drive away. There are horse riding facilities and many other amenities too numerous to mention. Please ask and we will find the information.

Peaceful and spacious

  • 5 of 5

Plenty of room for a getaway w 2 other couples. Lovely secluded mountain home. Great wrap around porch. Large living room for tv, games and conversation. Gracious host, very responsive. Ate at Browns in Sparta and bought beautiful bowl from local potter. Rain and fog prevented hiking at Stone Mountain State Park but it's very close to the home.

One of the nicest and most enjoyable places we have stayed!

  • 5 of 5

The house has a beautiful view and everything we could have wished for. The hosts have really been thoughtful in providing a wonderful experience and lots of good information. The house is very spacious and easily accommodated our group of 6. We only wish we had a longer time to spend here. We will definitely come back!

The comfort of the cabin exceeded our expectations.

  • 4 of 5

We were hosting a cousin reunion and six of us stayed overnight in the cabin while eight others joined us for a time of fellowship. There was plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen had EVERYTHING one could need. We also enjoyed the fire pit and our s'mores.

The driving directions provided by the owner were a big help, since the turns and hills of the gravel road could be tricky. While you are secluded in the woods, you do have a long range view of the beautiful mountains. Everyone enjoyed their time in Rocky Acres Retreat.

Owner's Response: We are so happy to know that everything you could need was provided and that you could enjoy time with family. We only know how we can improve by the feedback that is provided to us from our guests. We are out in the woods and we do know that some GPS's do not take you up to the house but actually stop at the end of our driveway which is .2 miles long so that is why we provide specific driving directions to all our guests. The views from the deck are amazing and change every moment. You just can't get enough. Come back and see us and relax at Rocky Acres Retreat.

WE LOVED IT!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin worked really well for our family. There were 6 of us/3 siblings and spouses. Each couple had our own bedroom and bathroom/were very comfortable. The kitchen is VERY well-equipped. We arrived at night and didn't realize until the next day how narrow the roadway leading up to the cabin was and how far the drop-off was. One suggestion would be to add reflectors on the steep side of the roadway leading up. The only other suggestion we would have is to have a blower (battery powered?) as every time we entered the house many leaves followed us in. If we could have blown them off the beautiful wood deck, that issue might have been alleviated. We enjoyed the rocking chairs, the corn hole game and used the gas grill to grill steaks our last night there. Another wonderful trip in the books.... loved it!

Owner's Response: I am so happy you enjoyed your stay and that everything you needed was to your satisfaction. Our goal is to make sure all our guests are as comfortable as being at their own home. Getting reflectors for the road is a fantastic idea. We have been driving those roads for years in the worst conditions and have become too familiar with them that we forget that our guests might be as comfortable as we are on those pitch dark roads at night. And providing a blower or broom is a good suggestion too as there is no stopping those leaves from falling in the fall if you don't mind sweeping them up. We always appreciate suggestions form our guest. Come back and see us an let us know how we are doing.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

This house was spectacular. From the seating on the deck, rocking chairs, firepit to the outdoor view was wonderful. Everyone commented on how comfortable the beds and furnishings were. Kitchen was well stocked with everything needed. Steve the owner was a pleasure to deal with and provided all necessary information. We loved the fact the only noise was the wind in the trees. Saw several does, a small 6 point buck and a huge raccoon that was eating right next to the small buck. Great place for family/friends gathering. We will definitely be back again. The leaves were just beginning to turn and temps were in the lows 70's so no AC was needed during the entire week.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review. It is sometimes hard to explain all the amazing things that happen in the woods on the edge of Rich Mountain. It's amazing to have the wildlife stroll through while you sit on the deck. We have only had a few buck deer sightings at the house. Buck sightings are almost as rare as a bear sighting. But the wildlife are your only neighbors at Rocky Acres so they stop in and say hi once in a while. We also strive to make sure that everything we would like in a vacation rental is offered so we are glad to hear you were happy with the furnishings as well as the beds. We think beds are one of the most important parts of a vacation rental. There's nothing worse than an uncomfortable bed. And we have several cooks in the family so we have to make sure everything you need is available to cook anything you like. The full fall colors usually happen in the second and third week of October so come back and see us next October. We will be happy to have you.

Great woodsy retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed a great stay. It is as described and set back in the woods. The last part of the road is unpaved but 4 wheel drive is not required. Thanks for everything, we had a great long weekend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for clearly identifying that we are in the woods and that even though the road is gravel it is accessible without 4 wheel drive. We do our best to maintain the .2 miles so there are not bumps that could cause cars to bottom out or have any problems getting in to the house. The only thing we do not do to the road is plow snow after a heavy snowfall so that is about the only time a 4 wheel drive is needed. We are so glad you had a great time in the woods. Rocky Acres Retreat offers the "Serenity" all of us need every now and then. Come stay with us again. You are always welcome.
