The History of Tossa de Mar:
Dolmens, menhirs, cavities and stone tools and ceramics from different excavations tell us that Tossa de Mar was already settled in the Neolithic period (5000 years before Jesus Christ), from prehistoric time. But the next time was Tossa continuously populated, this time by the Iberians (since 1000 BC). Archaeologists attributed many places in the region of Tossa establishments of the Iberians, among others also the land where the Roman villa dels Ametllers and the edge of the road leading to the lighthouse today is.
Coins and pottery fragments prove with certainty the presence of the Iberians to Tossa. According to modern knowledge we can also assume that the Iberians used to Tossa and as a port, and later also the Romans. Especially objects and ceramics found in places and made about 200 a. A.D. seem to prove these made.
And later, the city has Arabic influences, was an important medieval square in the nineteenth century and besieged by the French. The early Roman Villa dels Ametllers (de los Almendros) was divided into two parts, part urban and part fructuaria. Or what is the same, the noble part and the part devoted to agriculture. The main economic activity was the export of wine and had its period of splendor between the I centuries. C. and I d. C., particularly in the august period.
The current name of the city comes from Turissa and was found in a late Roman mosaic. It is thought that this name was first used by the Iberians. In the eighth century it was invaded by the Arabs. This influence and later the conquest and the feudal period ended up breaking the form of agricultural production that had held since the arrival of the Romans. In the twelfth century to protect Tossa pirates who continually lashed the Mediterranean coast the walled area known as Villa Vella was built. This will become the most important medieval testimony of the Catalan coast.
During the nineteenth century, Tossa suffered the Napoleonic invasion. One of the major consequences would be the collapse of the beautiful Gothic church of San Vicente. Today its ruins are still visible.
The twentieth century would be the transformation. Like many other towns in the Spanish coast, Tossa de Mar starts getting big boom in tourism. His appearance causes great contrasts between the new and the old. But today is a coastal town that still retains its essence and maintains an unparalleled nature surrounded by beaches and coves.
The parish church of Sant Vicenç Situated on Church Square in the center of town. It was built in 1755 to replace the old Gothic church of the medieval walled town. The tower Can Magi, this tower popularly known as Torre de los Moros, was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as a watchtower to protect the town from raids by Turkish pirates and Berbers who regularly came to that place from the sea . The Villa Romana, construction of the first century to V d. AD, consisting of two groups of separate buildings: an urban village, at a higher level, and a rustic villa on a lower level. Remarkable mosaics in the urban village; being the master, the atrium, is exhibited, restored, in the Municipal Museum. Socors chapel, this chapel was erected at the end of 1593. Culture House Old hospital and convent, built in 1773. In the 1950s, Ava Gardner and James Mason came to the small town to film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and that gave him some fame to the town. It is also the birthplace of Andres Velencoso Model International. There is a party room with live music which has been operating for over 50 years, currently remains as popular as ever, is called 'Tahiti' in it acted small group of Catalan rumba Pedro, Juan and Jose 'Rumba Tres' was then called 'The Spontaneous' today is run by one of his 'Juan' components continues to act in their party room and the Popular group Rumba Tres.
