Wow what a find Villa Fernando is absolutely fantastic. Clean spacious and very well equipped. The beds are so comfortable and the view from the master bedroom is to die for! Also the area is very quiet with only minimal cars using the narrow streets. It is possible to walk to the bar and restaurant about a 10 minute walk although you will need a torch if you are walking at night. We hired a car so often ate in Calheta the New Era is very good also a little restaurant called Naye Pizzeria at Loreta worth the drive fabulous mostly italian food. Thank you Jan for looking after us we will be back.
The photographs and details of Villa Fernando do not quite prepare you for the luxury and location. The open plan modern design is stylish and functional with an unobscured view of the Atlantic from the deck. Sunsets are spectacular. The area is quiet with almost no passing traffic on the small road to the villa. The villa has secure garage parking. The kitchen is fully equipped with a choice of breakfast bar, dining table or sundeck dining as you wish. The sun deck is a relaxing place to read sleep or take a dip in the pool - refreshing in November. The master suite has similar sea view and balcony with impressive ensuite and walk through wardrobe.
Madeira is compact and accessing levadas and mountain walking by car is easy from Calheta.
Dining out within walking distance is possible.
I would be veery happy recommend Villa Fernando the arrangements for booking, communication by email and meeting the owner were very straightforward. Jan also gave us lots of helpful advice and information about Madeira
This was our first trip to Madeira so didn't know any of the resorts. When Jan showed us into the villa it had the wow factor and it looks bigger and more impressive than in the photos. The villa is on a quiet road and has no immediate neighbours to the front or left.
We like this modern style and, although there are some cracks starting to appear and signs of damp spots the villa itself was as expected.
Unfortunately for us the holiday was ruined by the presence of a very loud Alsatian in the other modern villa which is positioned next door - to the front and right. The dog barked very loudly and very often. I feel it is important to mention this as, if we had known, we would never have booked it.
Our holidays are times when we want peace and quiet and be able to catch up on some much needed sleep and the fact that we were woken every day by the continual barking anywhere between 6 and 7.30am really did spoil the holiday.
I even bought some earplugs as I was getting so annoyed but it still woke me up with them in!
I did approach Jan early on to mention the dog and he told me that the dog was new and the owner had told him that it was "very intelligent and if you go and look at it and say shush it will stop". During the day you could go and do this but as soon as you sat back down it just started barking again. My point is though that when I'm asleep this is no help!
We had poor weather during our week so didn't get the chance to sit out by the pool very much but on the one afternoon we did the dog barked all the time.
The dog's owners are at fault as I don't think it was taken out at all and the villa looked empty so it was clearly being used as a guard dog. A lady just came in the morning to feed it and I think that is the only contact it had.
Hopefully this may not bother you but at least you now know of the potential issue.
The only other negatives were the lack of basic provisions in the villa. In UK cottages we have stayed in there are usually basic things there like milk, cooking oil, salt and pepper etc but here the only thing was tea bags. I can't believe other guests don't leave stuff - we left a lot - and it seems a bit mean not to have basics provided.
Had a wonderful first week in Madeira in this very modern and spacious villa for just the two of us. The open plan kitchen/dining/living area was wonderful and has now given us ideas of some modifications at home.
It has all the mod cons you'll need for a self catering holiday, breakfasts were always at the villa, then we explored the many restaurants around the island for evening meals, after exploring the island or having a lazy day by the pool.
The satellite TV had plenty of English content and was a real blessing as we caught a rain storm on one evening, which was definitely not going out weather, however we'd explored Porto Moniz on the North West of the island and had enjoyed a sun filled day already.
If we had a couple of niggles then it would be that the master bedroom bed is two singles pushed together which does create a gap, be much better to put the kingsize bed in from the other bedroom. We did switch to the other bedroom for just that reason.
The other is a bit of a strange one, it seems the birds of the island can't quite handle the glass barriers around the pool area yet, whilst we were there we found 3 that had died on the decking obviously swooping down low and into the glass.
We'd definitely recommend the Villa as a great place to stay and use as your base whilst on Madeira.
This property was exactly as described. Large, luxurious, excellent facilities, super position. Being new, it was exceptionally well maintained and a pleasure to be in. Some of the local restaurants had closed for the season (despite the fantastic weather!) and we found the best place to eat was the hotel in Calheta, which provided very good quality food in a pleasant setting. The local supermarket in Calheta was very well stocked and provided everything we needed.
Einfach toll!
