Newly renovated 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath vacation home sleeps 8-10
A newly renovated house located above a very private beach, Coco Flotante offers comfortable, elegant indoor and outdoor living spaces and magnificent ocean views.
Ocean breezes and the sound of surf fills a house that offers spectacular sunset views from every room. Eight to ten people can stay here very comfortably, but smaller groups will also find the home's intimate spaces welcoming and well-proportioned. The first floor offers two private master suites with king beds and en suite baths, plus a living room with TV, a well equipped kitchen, and a laundry room. On the second floor, a beautifully appointed bedroom with queen bed enjoys its own private floor-to-ceiling ocean views and shares a double vanity bath with the spacious twin bedroom down the hall. The bar and spacious lounge is ideal for watching sunsets.
The heart of the house is its beautifully landscaped outdoor living space, with large open air dining table, hammocks, ranchero, and intimate sitting areas just outside both of the two first-floor master suites. Relax in the infinity pool, nap in a lounge chair with palms rustling overhead, or retreat with drink in hand to a comfortable chair under the shade of the ranchero when the sun is strong.
The location is nothing short of spectacular, with unimpeded views of the Pacific and direct access to two beautiful beaches, which offer sand, surf, snorkeling, and a distinct lack of crowds.
Located little more than an hour from the airport in Liberia, or forty-five minutes from either Tamarindo or Santa Cruz, the village of Junquillal is easily accessible but not overly developed. You won’t find nightclubs and streets lined with shopping here, but if you’re looking for a laid-back, quiet, authentic setting with easy access to all kinds of options, you’ll love it. There are several excellent restaurants in the immediate area. Local tour guides can arrange horseback, zip line, or jungle river tours; and hiking, caving, birding, mountain biking, scuba diving, or deep sea fishing adventures. Just two miles to the north (a half hour walk on the beach) is the world class surf of Playa Negra. Surfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons and estuary tours are readily available.
A five minute walk brings you to the long, flat expanse of Playa Junquillal and its Turtle Nesting Sanctuary, which has received global recognition. From the lawn of Coco Flotante watch for low tide at Playa Blanca and you’re only two minutes away from fantastic snorkeling. Palo Verde National Park is one hour from the house and Rincon National Park is two. One of Costa Rica’s finest golf courses is located a half-hour away at the luxurious Hacienda Pinilla.
The Spanish-speaking caretakers who live on the premises are friendly and attentive. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

We rented the house for 9 nights with another family. The layout of the home was ideal for our group of 4 adults and 3 teens.
Downstairs there are 2 master suites on opposite ends of the house giving you plenty of privacy. Both have their own bathrooms, closets and access to the outdoor space.
Upstairs there are 2 additional bedrooms. One with 2 double beds and the other has a queen. These bedrooms share a large bathroom with 2 sinks and shower. The upstairs also has its own living space with a full bar, table, couches and chairs. The floor to ceiling windows have the most spectacular views of the Pacific ocean. We spent many evenings there playing card games.
Just off the kitchen, there is a smaller living room with a TV. However, w spent our time enjoying the ample outdoor living space. There is seating everywhere - by the pool, in the hammocks and the tables and underneath the shaded palapa. All of which have spectacular ocean views and are a perfect place to watch the magnificent sunsets.
The house sits on a bluff between two beaches. Playa Junquillal is to the left. It is just a short walk and is flat, has consistent winds and great for swimming and body/boogie boarding. Playa Blanca is to the right. It is closer, but a bit rockier. For either beach, I’d advise bringing water shoes. At low tide, the rocks and coral are exposed.
- The steep stairs to the beach could be difficult for the elderly or young children.
- There is a boogie board & several coolers but no umbrella or beach chairs.
- The 2nd floor is accessed by an outdoor stairwell. Might not be ideal if you have younger children in the upstairs bedrooms.
- Not a lot of bugs when it is breezy you should still bring bug spray.
- AC units in almost every room.
Food Shopping - Two grocery stores in Santa Cruz for your first day supplies, but save your big food shop for the Auto Mercado in Tamarindo. It is excellent with good meat, cheese, veggies, fruits, and bakery. T Supermercado Janquillal 5 minutes away and good for basics. The bread truck delivers to the house weekly and has amazing pastries, cakes, bread, baguette, donuts.
Private Chefs - We used both Pura Vida & PasCam
Local Restaurants - Guacamaya Lodge, Tatanka & Lola's
Massage - Have a Masseuse come to the house or splurge on splurge on a spay day at Los Altos de Eros.
Caretaker/Housekeeping - Gamma & Irene are wonderful. We felt very safe having them on live on the property.
COCO FLOTANTE - - - FAB - U - LOUS!
Our family (Gram/Gramps + 2 adult sons and their families---2 1/2 year old + 8 year old twins---) lived the Costa Rican Pura Vida to extreme at Coco Flotante last week. The house layout worked perfectly so that each family had its own space plus there was plenty of gathering places inside and out for us all to play together. The kitchen worked fine for our casual meals; pool was a super bonus!!; grassy area was perfect for the kids to run around; family room was inviting for lounging together.
The location in Junquillal was ideal for surf trips to Playas Negra and Avellana, meals at the nearby Eco Lodge restaurant, quick stops at the market and walks down the beach for jumping in the waves.
Gamma and Irene (caretakers) were so helpful and their daily clean up tasks were much appreciated!! Our family is strategizing how to make a 2018 trip a reality. Muchas gracias por todo.
Much more than you think you will get
Excellent property for 4 couples or a family of 8-10.We were 3 generations with 2/70+ grandparents,2 50+ sons with families including 3 teenagers 14-16 years. Plenty of room to stretch out and relax without being in each others faces. All bedrooms have individual air conditioners although they are not required this time of year. We thought the pool might be a little small but after spending endless hours in there we found it perfect regardless of age group.
Kitchen is extremely well equipped with Viking refrigerator and freezer.Lots of Utensils and
dishes/pots and pans. Daily makeup service provided by Irena and any mechanical problems fixed by her husband Gamma. Both live in an adjoining house on the property and are very respectful of your space and provide excellent security.
Views/Sunsets/wildlife are spectacular.Even saw a pod of whales breaching and periscoping right from the swimming pool.
Nearby restaurants are good and surprisingly plentiful. We choose however, with the help of
Georgina, to get a cook in for $40/day to cook and cleanup the evening meal(4-8PM). Her name is Wendy and Georgina can put you in touch with her.
Lots to see and do within an hour of the house. I would however recommend a good 4 wheel drive rental car .
All in all a great memorable family vacation.
A Very Relaxing Vacation!
Coco Flotante was a great get away for our family. We traveled with 3 adults and 3 teenagers. We opted to hire a driver (TPV) from the airport instead of renting a car. The driver will stop at a larger grocery store on the way at a small extra cost. Our bilingual driver was very helpful and informative. We probably would've ventured out more if we had our own vehicle, but relaxing on the property and walking the beach was absolutely fine for us the majority of the time. A golf cart or even bikes would've been perfect! We walked (15 minutes) to Restaurante Lochita's for lunch one day and it was very good authentic Costa Rican food, clean and friendly. Next to Lochita's is a roadside fruit stand where we purchased the majority of our fruit. We walked to the small market a little further when we ran low on supplies. We ordered pizza delivery one night which would've been easier if we were more fluent in Spanish, but the majority of our order arrived and was good. Upon arrival we were all very pleased with the property. Basically the lower level has 2 master suites and the upper level (accessed by outdoor stairs) has 2 more bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The tap water is very good and we reused our water bottles for refilling and chilling, so no need to spend a lot on bottled water. They do not recycle at the house. The pool was a necessary hang out since Costa Rica was in the midst of their hot dry season. Gama and Maria kept the property and house looking great! The Hotel Iguanazul next door had a wedding one night where the music played a little late, but for the most part it was very quiet and on most days we could walk the beach and only see a few people. Be warned, the freezer wasn't working well the first day so we sent the girls over for ice at the hotel where they were charged $12 for a bag of ice. Not cool! We walked (45 minutes) north on the beach to Playa Negra and rented surf boards ($10/day). There's a shower to rinse off and an open bar/grill for cold drinks and lunch (Lochita's had much better food). Many of the excursions were too far away for our taste so we opted for a 3 hour ATV/zip line tour in Tamarindo (30 minutes north $65 each way for transport). The teens loved the tour. We probably should have planned a full day in Tamarindo (shopping/lunch/tour/dinner) to make it worth the transport cost. Scuba socks worked great when walking on the rough rocks to look at the tide pools. Bug spray and lots of sun screen are a must!
We could not have had a better experience at Coco Flotante. The property is in a great, quiet, location (but isn't too far from active areas like Tamarindo). The house itself is incredibly clean and has all the conveniences you would expect. The caretakers did an excellent job taking care of the property and it was nice to know they were right there if we needed anything (we didn't, actually). The a/c units in the bedrooms work great although we only used them at night. The beach is fun for exploring the tide pools and a great swimming/snorkeling area is just a few moments away. There are a lot of fantastic local restaurants like Mundo Milo and Lochito's, but the kitchen is set up in a way that makes it easy to stay in and cook your own food, too. We can't wait to come back sometime soon, hopefully!
We just had the most wonderful five days as a family at Coco Flotante. The pictures don't do the house or property justice, and we were just floored when we arrived. The house was incredibly spacious and private for three couples, although we spent the majority of our time on the patio and in the pool. Maria and Gama were the house caretakers and were incredibly friendly and helpful, and Georgina was available to help us with questions about the area and food. This property is incredibly special, and we feel so grateful to have spent five days there. Would recommend this to anyone, and we hope to return as soon as possible!
