Ray and Barbara, born and raised in Rome, N.Y., went off to Syracuse U and Georgetown U, respectively, and developed separate family and careers in Manhatten and Alexandria. We reconnected at our 40th HS reunion in 2000, began dating a few months later and married in 2004. Barbara continues a parttime psychotherapy practice and Ray, a retired engineer, pursues his photography with vigor. In addition to each other, our primary love in life is our children and grandchildren. We delight in introducing guests to the charm of life in Sperryville and Rappahannock County.
Barbara Adolfi and Ray Boc purchased this house in 2003
Our original intention was to perk up this old house and rent it out. As we gutted and renovated this village farm house in 2004, its charm, warmth and vitality revealed itself and captivated our hearts. We decided that sharing it with visitors suited this house more than a mere rental. So we hung my mother's chandelier in the dining room, set up her double brass bed upstairs and started from there. The rest is history.
You will be totally comfortable in The House on Water Street. This quiet street is defined by the Thornton River, whose clean waters and trickling sounds calm all who stay here. Ray and I will help you arrange a weekend that suits your needs, if you like. Since we do not live there you will have total privacy, but we are but 1.5 miles and a phone call away if you need us. We have complete information on all the activities and amenities of the County. A complete continental breakfast is left in the house for you.
We had an amazing time here at the house! Everyone in the town welcomed a bunch of young, loud ladies like ourselves and it was fabulous! Thank you so much for inviting us into your wonderful place and we cannot wait to come back...when the town has recovered from our first visit that is...ha ha! Thanks again for a wonderful weekend that we ill remember for a lifetime! (Note: this group of women was here for a bachlorette party)
We were a party of 7 from UK travelling in USA for. 50th birthday, we stayed in the House on Water Street for two nights. The location was great we enjoyed exploring the town and surrounding area before driving the Shenandoah to our next rental. The house was great just as the pictures show, Barbara was very helpful and it is just like home from home with lovely little touches like croissants and jams for breakfast and fresh orange. The house was just perfect for our group and we all mucked in at meal times and then chilled in the evening in the cosy lounge. Would definitely recommend this rental.
What a glorious home away from home! We wanted to stay in a couple of rooms inside Shenandoah National Park, and calculated that this home was only marginally more expensive but included 4 bedrooms/2baths, and had such comfortable beds and seating all over property inside and out. Enjoyed quiet, lazy morning reading under the shade of glorious tree and took a nap on most comfortable outdoor furniture ever. No bugs--or at least very few compared to Chicago mosquitos! Sauntered into town for superb iced soy blueberry latte at "Before and After" which also had fabulous mini quiches made from eggs laid day before. Bakery further along that road served best donut of my life! I don't normally eat donuts. These were special! Also from that bakery, a loaf of black bread that was heavenly; my daughter said it tasted like cake! (Spread with blueberry jam Owner of house kindly supplied.) Owner also so sweet and came to house helping us plan our special hiking and nature trips. A gem of a vacation spot--one of the best of my life. We have lived in England/Surrey, and this was the first time I ever saw an area that rivaled its beauty. Sunshine too! Can't say enough also about proximity to so many things historic and cultural, obviously the park, and also just the restful feeling of staying put and relaxing at the house, or going for a very challenging hike. Friendly folks at pub! Great pool tables, food, drinks, educated bunch of down to earth people. Fun and beautiful trip. GREAT beds!!!! GLORIOUS GARDENS!!!
I have long loved Sperryville for the great hiking and beautiful nearby wineries. Usually I stay in cabins tucked back in the countryside. However, for this trip I wanted to be in walking distance to some of the great places in the little town such as the Thorton River Grille, the cute little pizza place, the pub and the microbrewery. This house was perfect for being able to walk everywhere in town. The rooms were comfortable and the house was cozy! Barbara was also a great host in answering questions via phone or email.
Well cared for historic home, nearby to hiking, restaurants, wineries. We had a wonderful relaxing time. Barbara was extremely helpful in arranging our in-home massages and suggesting places to go. we have already booked a follow up visit!
My wife booked a weekend stay here and it was perfect. Close to good restaurants and great beer, this was a wonderful retreat. The owners take great care of it and we are planning to come back soon,
Visit many art galleries, including Haley Fine Art Gallery, Middle Street Gallery, River District Art and Old Rag Gallery ...all just a stroll away. Copper Fox Antiques houses 30000 sq. feet of treasures. Don't miss the tour of Copper Fox Distillery, Pen Druid Brewery and Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works.....all three a short walk and you never have to worry about driving. Live music every Friday and Saturday at Headmaster's Pub (just over the foot bridge) and often Picking Parties at Pen Druid on Thursday evenings. Triple Oak Bakery, gourmet gluten free bakery, just 1.5 niles away. Dine at the Inn at Little Washington. We can personalize your visit with visits to award winning wineries, massages, spa services, pottery and photography classes, yoga, drumming circles, etc, All are within five minutes of Water Street, or at the house, Live performances and movies at The Theatre in Washington, Virginia, seven minutes from the house.
