The Bay Area House Rental Photos and Description

3+ bedrooms, sleeps 7 comfortably with a great kitchen overlooking the stream

just off a county road with loads of privacy and space to breathe. The house has been carefully renovated to provide an open space while retaining the charm of the original one room schoolhouse build in 1916. There are gardens for you to enjoy as well as a seasonal swimming hole (May-August unless it's a drought year like 2013). The entire grounds including the creek are an integral part of your stay here and you are encouraged to explore. The cabin nearby is where your host lives.

Centrally located in Northern California near the Napa Wine Country and 7 miles to the nearest town of Vacaville. Historic Winters is 25 miles away and Lake Berryessa is nearby for boating enthusiasts. Lake Solano is just a 10 minute drive where you can picnic, swim and go rowing.

About Eleanor MacMakin

I am one of life's travelers, curious and open to new ideas. I love this quiet spot on earth and have worked hard to create a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature.

Eleanor MacMakin purchased this house in 1985

Why Eleanor MacMakin chose The Bay Area

My grandmother bought this property because she was born and raised here in the early 1900's. My mother passed it on to me when I was raising my daughter. I have made extensive improvements to both homes and the property itself.

What makes this house unique

The property is situated on the headwaters of Ulatis creek so the seasons bring variety in the rise and fall of the water level. The swimming hole in June is really fantastic (except in drought years). The house has old world charm with it's original structure as a schoolhouse in the early 1900's.

Eleanor was a wonderful host. My family enjoyed the cabin in the woods. The creek was spectacular!

a unique getaway from the regular world

  • 5 of 5

Even though the structure is over 100 years old (I saw a reference to a photo of the Rhine School in Mix Canyon on the Vacaville Heritage Council website that was dated 1898 - same building?), it is a comfortable and clean place to stay. The kitchen and bathroom are up-to-date. The beds are comforable. Once you get it to cool down to overcome the Sacramento Valley summer heat, it is a pleasant temperature indoors. For us it was the perfect getaway after the family events we attended nearby. I would love to be there when the creek is running at high volume. There is plenty of relaxing ambience on the grounds and plenty of birds in the trees maintaining their music all day long. I would definitely go back.

Farmhouse Haven

  • 5 of 5

A group of us were in town for a hockey tournament in Vacaville and chose to stay at Eli's property. The house is delightfully charming and packed with necessities for a great stay. Eli made sure to leave the lights and fans on and the windows open for us since it was a warm summer day. The beds were all very comfortable and Eli was super prompt at responding to any questions via email.

The location was perfect and very relaxing. We hope to have more time next time to explore the grounds!

Beautiful getaway

  • 4 of 5

We booked this property for our anniversary getaway. The two biggest selling points for us were the outdoor tub and the treehouse: unfortunately it rained for a large portion of the time we were there. The house is beautiful, the creek is very close to the house and if you open the windows (particularly in the kitchen) you are able to enjoy the sounds of the bubbling creek throughout the house. There were lots of linens available which was nice. Eleanor is very kind and as soon as I arrived she came down to greet me, show me where to park, and unlocked the house for me so I could begin unloading. The hospitality was very appreciated. It didn't get cold enough to make the fireplace necessary, but it was absolutely beautiful nonetheless. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, lots of spices, cooking oils, and a spacious fridge/freezer. Our favorite part of the house was the kitchen, it's so spacious and yet feels cozy; the view out of the windows only adds to the appeal. We enjoyed that the overall feeling was being out in nature away from the city, yet it only took us about 15 minutes once we exited the freeway to reach the house. The road's a bit windy/narrow and is easier to traverse during the day than at night. There are beautiful wineries, horses, and rolling green pastures along the way which added to the "tucked away" feeling. As for why I gave 4 out of 5 stars: as another reviewer stated there was hair in the shower, there's internet but it's satellite and limited which made streaming movies/music difficult, the parking right next to the house is precarious when you're trying to back up to leave (there's a hill with boulders right behind it with tight turns on either side), and lastly: the fact that even if it hadn't been raining we probably still would not have used the outdoor tub. It's located along the side of the house and while standing near it I was able to plainly see the cabin that the host occupies as well as the host herself as she was outside gardening frequently. If you're not a super private/shy person that might be okay, but we weren't comfortable enough to even consider it. Overall, however, we enjoyed our trip and would probably return (though likely not for a romantic getaway though if planning to use the tub, etc).

Majestic Mountain Retreat

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I had an amazing time together. The property is located up a small windy mountain road and is private and secluded. Short drive to I-80 and the city. Very quiet and peaceful, you can hear the creek at night if you open the windows. The creek was flowing nicely and constantly which is so relaxing to listen to. We explored the creek and found adorable newts that were fun to see. Since all the rains, the property is filled with lush greenery and there is rosemary growing in the front yard which you can add to the amazing outdoor claw foot tub! This was the main reason I chose this place and it was worth it. Very comfortable tub, I could have slept in it. And the water gets very hot too. There is room for two and add in some champagne! Advice would be to use it in the afternoon or night because it's located right next to the house and in the morning, spiders come to sun themselves and warm up on that wall. And for those who do not have the luxury of a fireplace or wood burning stove, this one is a real treat. It's huge and keeps the house really warm. It already had the setup ready to go, we just had to light a match. Plus there is a supply of firewood there so you don't have to buy any. It made for a very romantic evening by the fire. Very comfortable house to stay in, well cared for by the owner.

Be sure to visit the Pena Adobe/Lagoon park which is right of the freeway. Lake Solano & lake Berryessa are close is well for nature lovers. Close to wine country as well. It was a great place and I would stay again. Thanks for a wonderful weekend getaway!

Gave 4 stars because the bathtub leaks so there are rust stains and mineral deposits. The house could use a deep cleaning, however seems typical level of cleanliness for a privately owned rental. There were hairs in the shower, so I'm not sure if that was cleaned before our arrival. Finally, there is no cable or movies, so be sure to bring or rent some for the dvd player!
