This comfortable house next to a creek in the woods has an open floor plan with a large farm kitchen. There are 4 bedrooms with a king, 3 queen and 1 single bed. There is a small house and permaculture garden in the back of this 1 acre property where I am staying. We have 3 hens and one roster and I welcome you with eggs, bread, juice and coffee.
Centrally located in Northern California near the Napa Wine Country and 7 miles to the nearest town of Vacaville. Historic Winters is 25 miles away and Lake Berryessa is nearby for boating enthusiasts. Lake Solano is just a 10 minute drive where you can picnic, swim and go rowing.
I am one of life's travelers, curious and open to new ideas. I love this quiet spot on earth and have worked hard to create a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature. I just got a roster to grow my flock. Permaculture practices are necessary to sustain the ecosystem and if I want to grow plants I need manure. I black out the roster's space so he does not crow during the night. I cutup fresh vegetables and fruits and feed only the best natural grains to my flock.
Eleanor MacMakin purchased this house in 1985
My grandmother bought this property because she was born and raised here in the early 1900's. My mother passed it on to me when I was raising my daughter. I have made extensive improvements to both homes and the property itself.
The property is situated on the headwaters of Ulatis creek so the seasons bring variety in the rise and fall of the water level. The swimming hole in June is really fantastic (except in drought years). The house has old world charm with it's original structure as a schoolhouse in the early 1900's.
After coming up a winding road you enter the gate and are impressed with the scenery surrounding the house. Trees, wildflowers, herbs, a creek (unfortunately dry), chickens and a treehouse. The house was perfect for our 2 families as we arrived to sightsee, wine tour and more importantly, to participate in our son's wedding. We had everything we needed for our stay and Eleanor was there to answer any questions. Bring dvds and lookout for the peacock as you head towards the highway! ;)
If this had not been the hottest week of the year I'm sure we would have enjoyed our stay much more. It would have been great if our host had cooled the house down before our arrival. We spent our awake time in the kitchen, where the window A/C is located, and were able to keep cool enough until the temperature dropped at night. This and the lack of phone service or cable TV gave us some great together time in this remote canyon. If you live nature and want to get away from it all this is the place for you.
Eleanor was a wonderful host. My family enjoyed the cabin in the woods. The creek was spectacular!
Even though the structure is over 100 years old (I saw a reference to a photo of the Rhine School in Mix Canyon on the Vacaville Heritage Council website that was dated 1898 - same building?), it is a comfortable and clean place to stay. The kitchen and bathroom are up-to-date. The beds are comforable. Once you get it to cool down to overcome the Sacramento Valley summer heat, it is a pleasant temperature indoors. For us it was the perfect getaway after the family events we attended nearby. I would love to be there when the creek is running at high volume. There is plenty of relaxing ambience on the grounds and plenty of birds in the trees maintaining their music all day long. I would definitely go back.
A group of us were in town for a hockey tournament in Vacaville and chose to stay at Eli's property. The house is delightfully charming and packed with necessities for a great stay. Eli made sure to leave the lights and fans on and the windows open for us since it was a warm summer day. The beds were all very comfortable and Eli was super prompt at responding to any questions via email.
The location was perfect and very relaxing. We hope to have more time next time to explore the grounds!
We booked this property for our anniversary getaway. The two biggest selling points for us were the outdoor tub and the treehouse: unfortunately it rained for a large portion of the time we were there. The house is beautiful, the creek is very close to the house and if you open the windows (particularly in the kitchen) you are able to enjoy the sounds of the bubbling creek throughout the house. There were lots of linens available which was nice. Eleanor is very kind and as soon as I arrived she came down to greet me, show me where to park, and unlocked the house for me so I could begin unloading. The hospitality was very appreciated. It didn't get cold enough to make the fireplace necessary, but it was absolutely beautiful nonetheless. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, lots of spices, cooking oils, and a spacious fridge/freezer. Our favorite part of the house was the kitchen, it's so spacious and yet feels cozy; the view out of the windows only adds to the appeal. We enjoyed that the overall feeling was being out in nature away from the city, yet it only took us about 15 minutes once we exited the freeway to reach the house. The road's a bit windy/narrow and is easier to traverse during the day than at night. There are beautiful wineries, horses, and rolling green pastures along the way which added to the "tucked away" feeling. As for why I gave 4 out of 5 stars: as another reviewer stated there was hair in the shower, there's internet but it's satellite and limited which made streaming movies/music difficult, the parking right next to the house is precarious when you're trying to back up to leave (there's a hill with boulders right behind it with tight turns on either side), and lastly: the fact that even if it hadn't been raining we probably still would not have used the outdoor tub. It's located along the side of the house and while standing near it I was able to plainly see the cabin that the host occupies as well as the host herself as she was outside gardening frequently. If you're not a super private/shy person that might be okay, but we weren't comfortable enough to even consider it. Overall, however, we enjoyed our trip and would probably return (though likely not for a romantic getaway though if planning to use the tub, etc).
