Patshull Road is a Georgian house with the soul of a New York loft. This is the family home deconstructed – so you’ve large, uncluttered spaces and a state-of-the-art kitchen diner – and, too, exposed brickwork, distressed metal and fabulous reclaimed furniture. Photography lovers will thrill to the exceptional shots that adorn the walls, and to the vistas on offer outside in Kentish Town. Miniature parks, pastel painted terraces and neat front gardens keep this part of London bright and breezy, and if you want to turn things up a notch, you’re within walking distance of the rock ‘n roll bars of Camden Town.
Your hostess runs a photographic gallery, while your host is a film editor. An instinctively visual pair, they took possession of Patshull Road a couple of years ago, and designed its interiors themselves.
There are shades of the Lower East Side to the sitting room, with its retro couch in toffee leather, that funky lamp and the breath-taking images adorning the walls. Next door, the dining table’s lit with teardrop pendant lights, and when the plates are cleared, you can gather around the piano for a good old cockney sing-song. The kitchen’s spacious, comfortable, and, thanks to that wall of glass, filled with sunshine. There are two kids’ singles, filled with books and toys, and a guest double with a toilet room in tones of luscious lemon curd. And then, there’s the master bedroom… not only have you a vast bed, an original fireplace and pretty views out into the street, you’ve also the benefit of an enormous, brand new ensuite. There’s a walk-in shower, wooden shutters, and, resplendent in the centre of the room, a decadent freestanding bath.
Kentish Town has become one of London’s culinary hotspots, and you may have to queue for the likes of Pizza East, Chicken Shop and Dirty Burger – but trust us, it’s worth it. Walk up to Gospel Oak and Hampstead Heath for outdoor swimming and a picnic, or down to Camden to hang with the punks. Or, if you’re heading for the West End, the tube from Kentish Town to Leicester Square takes less than fifteen minutes.
