A 'roots luxe' beach front guest house in Treasure Beach on the South Coast of Jamaica.
This section of the South Coast is one of the special hide-away spots of Jamaica.
Treasure Beach has no 'all inclusives', & Calabash House is surrounded by Jakes , long considered to be 'the hippest resort in the Caribbean'.
We offer a laid back, small town atmosphere, perfect for family vacations, or small workshops, as well as couples, friends or the individual traveler.
Our gracious staff will make sure you feel at home.
Jamaican food has always been considered the best in the Caribbean, & our cook Suzett will be sure you know why.
Breakfast on the back veranda overlooking the sea, with fresh squeezed orange juice & delicious local fruits, some grown in our own yard, is only the start of your perfect day.
TB has a wide variety of local attractions, all within walking distance, including live music by Joe Issacs of the original Heptones playing various nights of the week at one of the local bars, South Jammin, as well as other musicians, visiting or local, at various small venues. Bring your guitar if you play, you never know when you might find an open mike.
A completely safe atmosphere for grown-ups & teens to wander, day or night, there are short walks, longer treks, small cafes, wide spread internet access, ice cream breaks, everything you would want to see, at several local beaches, the best of which is right out your back door at Calabash House.
If you want to take to the water there are wonderful boat excursions with local fisherman.
You are only a 20 minute boat ride to the world famous & completely original Pelican Bar, built by Floyd in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
Just another few miles on the fishing boat will take you into Black River, the largest morass in the Caribbean, full of crocodiles, birds, fish, beautiful trees & plants, including endangered mangroves.
The other direction will take you to the fabulous 'Little Ochie' a seafood restaurant where you pick your seafood, have it weighed, decide how you want it cooked & then hang out in beached fishing boats with a thatch roof chilling out with a red stripe until your cook brings you the delicious fare.
Afterward you can go look for the manatee at Alligator pond, one of the many interesting sites in the area.
Just north of Black River is the beautiful YS Falls, with the longest zip line in Jamaica, for the bold, & a relaxing swim in any one of several pools of this magnificent, many tiered fall.
Once again, a myriad of flowers, plants & birds as well as huge trees in this lovely, well cared for attraction.
Treasure Beach & Calabash House offer you the unique opportunity to enjoy the Jamaican people, one of the friendliest & most accessible populations in the English speaking Caribbean.
The owner/artist, Elizabeth, has decorated the walls with original mosaics & some of the many participants in art workshops at Calabash House have graced the walls with their paintings.
No shortage of provocative art or reading materials, we stock the bookshelves with works from emminant Caribbean authors every year at the Calabash Literary Festival, considered by insiders to be the festival you most want to be invited to, as well as the standard detective thrillers, in case your idea of the perfect vacation means never getting out of the hammock [beachfront, of course].
You can check out the on site Mermaid Art Gallery for that special unusual treasure to take home to the ones who didn't get to go, or to remind you of the fun you had at Calabash House when you are back shoveling snow, or trying to force that frozen door lock.
As they say in Jamaica.... soon come.
