From late October through February, thousands of migrating Monarch butterflies cluster in the limbs of the Monterey pines and Eucalyptus trees near Pismo Beach. Like these beautiful insects, you’ll discover it’s a wonderful place to spend some time.
They holiday here, undoubtedly, for the quintessential California experience. This means surfing, of course, as well as horseback riding along the tide line or strolling the length of the Pismo Beach Pier. From Pismo Beach, it’s easy to tour wineries, go on a whale-watching tour, take flight in a biplane or head 55 miles north (a one-hour drive) to Hearst Castle, the palatial home of the late publisher William Randolph Hearst. If you make this trip, just make sure that your ride is a convertible and the Beach Boys are playing on the sound system. This is California at its classic best.
Please plan 13 months in advance for best availability. This is a small resort and it does fill up quickly.
Monarch butterflies migrate to this area every year. The four month monarch season begins late October and lasts through February. You can view this spectacular event by taking the butterfly trail which is only a quarter mile from the resort.
Monarch Butterfly Grove
From late October to February, Pismo Beach hosts up to 100,000 migrating Monarch butterflies. During the season, docents host daily walks through the grove (weather permitting). For more information, call the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce. Located on State Highway 1 at the south boundary of the city limits of Pismo Beach.
San Luis Obispo
Explore the charming nearby town of San Luis Obispo, home to the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The town also features a charming shopping district filled with stores, cafes and coffee houses. Approx. 14 miles.
Take a guided tour through Hearst Castle, one of the largest historic house museums in the U.S. Once the home of William Randolph Hearst, the estate features 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. Reservations are required.
