About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom mountain retreat with New River views & waterfrontage too

The character of The PORCH begins long before you reach the house. You will drive down the magical road. The canopy of trees hangs heavy over the path before you. In summer, it shades the sun's heat and gives a gentle illumination to this place where so many creatures have scurried, on any particular day. You may be lucky enough to see a deer scamper across the road. Watch for its companion. I always seem to see them two at a time. You may get a thrill the first time you cross the low water bridge. It may not look it, but it is sturdy! The road will twist and turn as you make your way to The PORCH.....THIS IS HOW HOME IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL!! It's warm, not in the sense of temperature, although The PORCH can be toasty on a chilly night. The PORCH has a warmth that beacons you to slip off your shoes and snuggle into any of the many inviting areas, as comfy and soft as a little bird's nest. The hammock is especially nice on a starlit night. It is premium seating for the celestial show. The swing brings back thoughts of the end of a sweet date night. Remember being giddy as you glided back and forth, just anticipating that goodnight the cheek, of course. And the rocking chair is almost demanding a nice glass of sweet tea or some homemade lemonade. The fire pit is screaming, 'Bring your marshmallows over here!! And some hotdogs while you are at it.' I guess the kids are looking for something requiring a little more energy. It that's case, break out the croquet set, the horseshoes or the badminton set. The river is always a kidmagnet! It hosts interesting rocks and crawdads and fish (but you need a fishing pole to enjoy the best of those river creatures.) The wooded area invites the kids to explore the nature which surrounds them. There are some of the world's best rocks for climbing. But be careful nature is full of poison ivy and yucky stuff like that too. Nestled on a knoll which overlooks New River you will find the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom quiet retreat you sought as you withdrew from the demands that have stressed you far too long. Forget those things for now. There is a wonderful bed, the perfect firmness, queen size, in the master bedroom. Across the masterbed room is a comfy reading chair. Just snuggle and wiggle down into it with a easy-read book. Soon those weary eyes will find the dreams of that deep sleep you've sought for so long. The master bedroom offers its own private deck for star-gazing like you've never seen. Relax in one of the nice swivel rockers, and your precious one in the other. Put your feet up on that padded ottoman. Lean back. Have you ever seen stars so bright?! I hope you are lucky enough to see a meteor shower. Heaven's fireworks. The master bath's beautiful granite countertop glistens, illuminated by the beams streaming in from the skylight. The master bath is fitted with shower, linen cabinet and walkin closet. Bedroom two is furnished with a queen bed and large walkin closet. This bedroom offers great comfort. The bed is a little haven, not just for sleeping but for refreshing your mind and recharging energy levels. Its a great place to seek God, and just listen for Him. The third bedroom has a twin bed with trundle plus a flip chair. Bath 2, the hall bath, has a shower/tub and granite countertops. Run some nice warm water in that tub. Step in, sink down and soak those too-tired-muscles! Oh and yes we have a commode inside! Yes! A real porcelain potty. And there is one in each bath. But if you want the experience of an old timey outhouse, there's one down by the river. And guess what! Its a double seater! So girls, grab your BFF's hand and do the potty thing together. You've never felt so close! But it is outside so watch for spiders. Bring your own biodegradable tissue. Meanwhile, back at the house, the kitchen is outfitted with coffee maker, stand mixer, George Forman and all the pots, pans and appliances you should need. There is a new range! It's convection with a smooth glass top. The side by side fridge is new, as well. It should hold all the cold goodies you'll need for your stay. Ice dispensed on the door or an easily removable ice server. And though we don't recommend doing laundry on your vacation, the laundry/mud room has a large capacity washer and dryer. Feel free to crank up a nice fire as you watch your favorite reality show on the livingroom tv (but you can watch tv at sit on the porch and enjoy nature's music of rushing water of New River or the babbling Elk Creek from the master deck). The wrap around porch attaches to the expansive deck of 250 sq ft. The views from the deck are fabulous. If you sit quietly, you'll hear the careful steps of the deer as they climb the hill beside the deck. I sometimes imagine I'm living in that wonderful treehouse from Swiss Family Robinson. The thing is you are away, you're in the midst of nature's finest offerings. Enjoy. Let your imagination have its way, like when you were a

It is an amazing place!

The view of the river is spectacular! There are so many fireflies in the evenings that it is magical!

The house is very clean and comfortable. It had everything we needed. I definitely plan to stay there again.

Perfect landing spot

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time!

The house is tucked away in a lovely little spot between the New River and Elk Creek. We could hear the creek water rushing as we rocked on the front porch. There are 6 chairs to choose from, as well as the porch swing. It was a great spot from which to watch our three girls catch lightening bugs. Or how about the back deck? We had lunch at the picnic table by day and roasted s'mores in the firepit at night. The backyard was great too. We are from Houston and it's pretty darn flat at home. They loved running down the gentle slope. We had a deer with her two fawns to surprise my very excited two year old one morning. The next, a big cow that must have escaped the pasture looked up at us as she had breakfast!

Inside of the house was even better than expected. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. VERY clean. If anything was forgotten, it just may have been thought of and there just-in-case. The kitchen had nearly anything needed to cook with, and the washer and dryer allowed us to go home with no dirty laundry!

Gayle couldn't have been easier to work with either. She was very responsive as we had a small issue when we arrived, nothing to do with the house proper. Despite us feeling like we were bugging the heck out of her, she was friendly and enjoyable to chat with.

We stayed at the house while visiting family in the area. We go up once or twice a year and usually stay with family. We have slightly outgrown the guest bedroom and we're looking for a landing spot. I think we may just have found the perfect one.

Over the river and through the "The Porch" you'll want to go!!!

  • 5 of 5

That song "over the river and through the wood to Grandmothers house we go" was in my head the entire time we stayed at " The Porch". We booked with Gayle for Christmas week and it was exactly what I had envisioned in my head. We were spending it with our son and his family, to include our grandchildren. Seldom does anything reach my level of expectation, but I almost burst into tears upon our arrival. We had heart breaking news on our departure date (family illness), and actually considered canceling our trip. But, my husband insisted we still go regardless.

We arrived around midnight on Christmas Eve...a very special night indeed! Part of the road was dirt/gravel driving in, and there were deer all over the place. They just walked in front of our car, little white tails flashing, as if signaling to Santa "let's hurry to our next stop, it's almost morning!"🎅󱐼􏏼

The home ( and I do mean "home"), was so warm and inviting. Beautiful decorations, flickering candles 🕯񫱯n the mantle, everywhere I turned were thoughtful beautiful touches. To include an opened bible on the coffee table, as to what Christmas is all about. I was just in awe over everything. 😍򓑒eally, the only thing I had to do was put up the tree. Gayle already had a tree for us, and it was so easy to put together, it maybe took 10 minutes. Gorgeous tree too, it even twirled around showing off all its glory after the grandchildren decorated it. Although, a little heavy with candy canes along the bottom because that's as high as they could reach. 🎄󱀼󱎄🎄󱀊The Porch had everything we needed pretty much. We did not have internet connection, which really would not have been a big deal had we not had the family issue. But, we had to keep running into town to get updates. Plus, we were a little worried if we had an emergency. I told my son we would let them know when we arrived on Christmas Eve, and couldn't contact, he layed awake all night at home worried sick something happened and I couldn't sleep because I knew he would think that.

We lucked out as far as the weather, it rained a little, but was fairly warm that week. We enjoyed the firepit and grill on the porch, made smores, and cooked lots in the kitchen! Great memories!!

We ended our stay a day early because snow was forecasted, and we didn't have the option to stay longer as other guests were coming in. I wish we could have stayed longer?? You bet....maybe see you in autumn!!

Thank you Gayle, you are AWESOME!!! 😘򖀊

Perfect Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at The Porch. It had everything we could possible need! We had 4 teenage girls with us and there was some grumbling about the wifi situation at first, but it ended up being a great thing! They were all forced to put down their phones and sit around the table playing games. We all enjoyed sitting on the beautiful deck and going for walks. There was lots of laughter and fun. It was a great time of family bonding and my husband I can't wait to rent this property again. Gayle is wonderful to work with and goes out of her way to make sure your stay is perfect.

The Porch

  • 5 of 5

We had a magnificent time at the Porch. Inside and out this beautiful property provided a "very hospitable" setting for a family reunion. The kitchen was well supplied with all the needed cookware to satisfy our gourmet chef (my Son-in-Law) who provided a most excellent cuisine. The large porches with swings, rocking chairs, and picnic table provided covered and uncovered settings to dance in and out of the Sunny/Rain with Spots of Sun days which we enjoyed. The rooms were open and windows provided scenic enjoyment from inside the home. Gayle was kind to allow our daughters hounds to attend this event. :) They slept in their usual they do at home. Golf was close by in Sparta and challenging. A little later in the season with warmer weather we would have kayaked and swam in the New River. The hounds loved swimming in the stream anyway. The Porch will make a particularly scenic & enjoyable Autumnal rural setting .

About Gayle

Hello dahleeng (darling)! I'm so pleased that your interest in The PORCH has brought you to this point. I am merely the caretaker of this earthly piece of heaven, by God's grace. At this point in my life, many things bring joy and life is a little less serious than the days of racing with the rats, so to speak. One great source of joy is making people smile or laugh. I believe my role with The PORCH is just one avenue which gives joy to others and therefor results in a smiles and giggles from my guests. The Lord is my greatest source of joy. I love sharing the blessings HE has given. So many blessings...My family, The PORCH, my horses, my pups, my hopefully YOU!

Gayle purchased this house in 2000

Why Gayle chose Mouth of Wilson

There are so many properties, homes and places inviting you, my friend. Why would you choose The PORCH as your vacation home? Only because you feel lead to this spot. It is far from the crass commercialism of so many destinations. We have been blessed to call this little nest our getaway since 2000. I don't know how many times I've made the drive down that dirt road. Every time my tires leave the paved road and roll onto the compacted dirt drive, I feel a great peace. The PORCH is the destination for those who seek to leave the commercial world behind. It is the place to recharge the depleted soul. The PORCH is a place that makes you want to lay down in the grass and watch the sky, to stargaze. This is where all the crickets in the world sing their evening song. They duet with the rushing waters of Elk Creek or New River. Their song is a great lullaby. When night gives way to day, there are so many adventures beckoning you: bike trails to ride, waterfalls to explore, mountains to hike, crawdads to catch, unique shops to discover, quaint streets to stroll. There are coffee shops (not StarBucks, sorry), pottery studios, community theaters, antique shops, restaurants. You can go fishing, tube the river, rappel the mountain. You may choose to simply rock on the porch or make a fire in the fire pit. All your necessities are just 15 minutes away.

What makes this house unique

If you're into fishing, the river is a short walk down the driveway. Lots of people find enjoyment in floating or tubing, kayaking or canoeing down the river. There are unlimited photography opportunities. You may find a cave to explore. Stone Mountain park is close by with great hiking paths and a great waterfall. If waterfalls are your thing there's one just by the road outside Independence. Independence is home to the historical courthouse and the Davis-Bourne House. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a few miles away. Visit one or several of the wineries. Don't think twice about cutting the the cheese factory in Jefferson. There are quaint shops for strolling through in Sparta and downtown Galax but no fancy commercial boutiques. Check out Mangum Pottery which is just around the bend. There are bunches of crawdads in the be sure to put the little creatures back. Trout? Trout ponds everywhere. If you want a fishing guide for the river, we got 'em! There are fishing guides who know where all the fish hide. Enjoy the quiet country in the front porch rocker.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This was the best vacation in years. It was so nice to spend time away from all the busyness of work, every day demands that make you crazy. There was no schedule to keep. We just enjoyed all the pleasures that nature has to offer. This was a vacation that actually refreshed our souls rather than those typical vacations that make you feel like you need a vacation to get over the vacation. What a great place!! I highly recommend The PORCH!!
