A log cabin designed and built in Norway, taken apart and brought to this 6 mile long island in mid-coast Maine is available for rent in June, with some weeks available in July, 2013. 4 Bedrooms sleep 9 people (7 regular twin beds; 2 loft beds), 2.5 bathrooms, 1950's kitchen, and open living/ dining room area. 2 gorgeous carved soap stone fireplaces, wood carved details everywhere, outside patio overlooking 2 water views, on a quiet peninsula on the west side of the island. Sunset views, lovely island biking, rights to a dock for those who own a boat or would like to go boating. Semi-private beach just steps away complete this unique experience.
Our grandparents built this cabin after living in Norway for several years.
This photo shows one of the original Norwegians, our mother, enjoying the beach below the sod roofed house.
Ingrid purchased this cabin in 1953
Our grandmother came to this island as a child, and returned when her husband retired. This cabin was the guest house, custom built to her exacting specifications, but we spent many happy summers here, and enjoy our own children in this beautiful place.
There's something about feeling as if you're in Europe, after just a drive and a ferry ride away. The cabin is both rustic and ornate; the carvings exquisite, the built-in furniture so well crafted and unusual, the views are beautiful, the beach combing can keep you busy for hours.
...except maybe in Norway. But then you wouldn't have the extraordinary experience of an island in Maine with views of famed Penobscott Bay! This property is unlike any place you have ever been: the all Norwegian pine house, shaggy grass & wildflower roof plus antique furnishings is a living "museum" of Scandinavian handicrafts going back to the Vikings. Every night while you are sleeping the trolls dance about the place - we are absolutely sure of that fact. Sunrise & sunset, hell, all day long in every possible kind of weather scenario, the mood is other-wordly colors & sounds. It will be your favorite get-away EVER! (North Haven is fun, too, but you just won't want to leave the Cove...)
Many of the islanders are lobstermen and fishermen, and fresh food from the sea is always available. Wild berry picking, mushroom hunting and sea glass collecting are popular past times. Migratory bird populations are very evident all summer long, and bald eagles are known to nest nearby. There is one outstanding restaurant, with practically all-locally sourced produce and meats, and a wonderful new gourmet pizza shop in town with an organic market. The lunch spot, Cooper's Landing, is a lovely way to while away the afternoon in town, sitting out enjoying the boats sail through and the kids romping around.
