About the property

Village house, open plan living with all mod cons

Original village stone houses, restored with ECO principles, set in a quiet, traditional corner of the village.

Just 5 minutes drive from the fabulous sandy beach of Agathi, and the pretty harbour of Haraki.

It is an active traditional agricultural village, surrounded by orange, and olive groves which keep the locals busy all year around.

A small village with little narrow streets, with an authentic traditional pace of life. A place where the men of the village sit out in the evenings in the local cafes, and the women sit together in the streets with the children.

Many here speak some English after time spent working in America, and you will find them curious and friendly.

A 15 minute drive finds you in the beautiful village of Lindos, or 10 minutes in the other direction, in the heart of Rhodes 2nd town Archangelos.

About Clare Lee

Hi, I am Clare , British, and the owner and renovator of these two houses. I lived permanently in Rhodes from 2003-2013 so that I could follow my dream to renovate traditional houses with due care to the environment, using traditional methods of building. As an Interior designer, you will find the houses are practical, well detailed, and contain everything you need. Apart from being a Mum, and looking after the running of the houses, I am also a Yoga teacher. We have been renting these houses since 2008, and people have been most enthusiastic about their experience. We trust you will be too.

Why Clare Lee chose Malonas

I bought the houses in Malona as a stepping stone for us to the South of the island as we live near town generally. We love to drive to all the corners of the island, so the house is perfectly situated for this. An easy drive to join friends in Lindos, or to Kiotari for the fresh summer breezes, over to Monolithos for wild views and beaches, or for windsurfing madness down on Prassonisi beach at the far point of the island. Equally we love to sit in Haraki where we never fail to feel like we have arrived on a tiny Greek island somewhere. We enjoy the slow pace of the village, and find we are able to relax when we arrive there, riding the bikes and letting the children be free without a crowd in sight.

What makes this house unique

Visitors are most thrilled here about the style of the houses the kitchen facilities, and the fact that they are not part of the touristic trail.

We enjoyed our holiday in Rhodes very much.

The house was great and comfortable.

We did use the Air Conditioning, the Temperature was high outside and it was also warm inside so we used it really every day.

The car showed 38 °C and we had 29°C in the evening.

It was nice not to need any jacket and to spend your time in the sea as long as you like.

Thank you for staying longer in the house, it really made things easier.

  • A unique bathroom with a mosaic tiled sink, a walk in wet shower area, washing machine and WC. All the walls are covered in a coloured natural plaster and the house gets its name from the remainder of the old bread oven that serves as a shelf area in the corner. This was one of the villages hidden bakery ovens from WW2 ! The hot water is solar powered and has an electrical back up facility.

  • You see from the photos that the 2 double beds are up on the platforms in diagonal corners of the house as is Greek tradition in these houses. You will enter the bed from the foot end only and have a box shelf behind your head as the head board and for your books etc. There is a sleeping sofa bed next to the fireplace, or at the dining area.

Notes:
The house has a 55 sq.m. roof terrace accessed through small storage room. A corner of this area as you step out has a lightly shaded area with sofa seat and 2 reclining chairs. The views from here are to the church, village and surrounding countryside, which this house sits right on the edge of. General countryside noises should be expected. Parking to the side of the house is on the street next to the house, or up to the church area. Outside the front door is an old traditional cooking/BBQ area to be shared with next door. The house is air-conditioned with heat exchange for cooler months, plus 1 standing fan available. Children are welcome, be aware there are no handrails on the stairs to the platform beds and no stair gates, I found my son was deterred by a chair when he was young ! The roof terrace is accessed by boat ladder like stairs with a hand rail.

What a wonderful surprise! Clare, the owner /designer extraordinaire ... Made such a beautiful place to stay...open light airy, complete with private roof deck. although one needs a car to stay in Malona as it is approximately 10 mins from your choice of many beaches, 15 from Lindos, a good 35 mins from Rhoades..with a car it is a wonderful way to see the whole island and have a fairly centrally located home base in a lost in time weenie old Greek

Village, at least 4 small markets and the incredible fresh produce truck swings through the village pretty much every other day(do not miss him!! Even if you are choosing to eat out all meals...his fruit bar none is some of the most delicious I have ever eaten...July/August stone fruits...incomparable peaches, nectarines, plums...outstanding. Be found in the extensive homemade welcome book. Crisp cotton sheets, towels, fully equipt kitchen, games, tv, music, wifi, books...Clare though of most everything...even a washer and plenty of clothes lines on the roof to quickly dry...make sure to stop by Stephanos in town for a lovely home cooked meal by his wife or share a leisurely glass of Ozso with him to learn all about the locals and local goings on...the best spanakopita comes from the bakery just a few doors down and closer to the entrance of Malona...safe, tidy, charming...a truly wonderful slice of Greek life and staying at with of Clare's fantastic rentals with not disappoint ! The place to be

Quiet location and great atmosphere. Very warmly decorated house. It lacks nothing.

Owner's Response: Yes exactly, a great location for easily exploring the commercial north, the wild south, the long sandy beaches of the East, and the castles in the west with glorious views and sunsets, all within a 5 to 45 minute drive. We aim to make the house welcoming and with everything you could possibly want, it's always good to hear that's how it feels.

Spent 5 days here and it was great,the kids loved it, a really unusual property in a traditional village. The owner is lovely and couldn't have made us more welcome.

Die Einrichtung ist ausgesprochen geschmackvoll und berücksichtigt die Traditionalität von Rhodos auf sensible und bezaubernde Art und Weise. Gleichzeit sind alle modernen Ansprüche an Komfort befriedet: Kühlschrank (der keinen Lärm verursacht), schicker Gasherd, Klimaanlage. Welch herrliches Leben: komfortable Moderne im 16.Jahrhundert!! Die Dachterasse ist eine Oase und viel schöner als auf dem Bild! Die versorgende gute Fee, die das Haus vor Ort betreut, war unser lebendiger Schutzengel. Wir waren mit zwei Kindern hier, die sich mit dem Haus schnell anfreundeten und sich sehr glücklich hier fühlten, nicht zuletzt durch die liebevolle Einrichtung!! Vielen Dank für diese herrliche Zeit - ein wunderbarer Glücksgriff !!

Golf: The islands golf course is approx 15 mins in down the road in the direction of town, in Afandou. I am to understand it is not a great quality course, but fabulously located on the edge of the beach.
