Just renovated, this charming barn cottage is situated across from a small apple orchard on a quiet country lane in New Marlborough. Surrounded by several hundred acres of Wildlife Sanctuary and New Marlborough Land Trust, you can walk out your door onto hiking trails around Thousand Acre Lake and beyond.
The cottage (our former studio - we are both artists) has a living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, and bath. One bedroom has a queen bed, one bedroom has a single bed and a separate computer room/office (with free Wi-Fi) doubles as a third bedroom (I have a folding single bed). The total living space is 900 square feet, not counting the large deck off living room, which overlooks fields and woods and sunset. The cottage is near (six miles) the Yale Music School’s Norfolk Music Festival (great concerts with guest artists) and is a short (scenic!) drive on quiet country roads to Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow Dance (free outdoor afternoon performances by some of the best dance companies), Great Barrington (Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center) and Stockbridge, home of the Berkshire Theatre Festival, as well as the other main Berkshire attractions.
Less than two miles away is York Lake, which has a supervised, sandy beach (great for family swimming) with restrooms and picnic areas with grills and tables. Both York Lake and Thousand Acre Lake (a half mile down our road are excellent for wildlife viewing and kayaking, with the two kayaks we have, no charge. Also close by are two scenic waterfalls, Campbell Falls (see photo) and Umpachene Falls, both perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
Also less than two miles away are the New Marlborough Old Inn on the Green Restaurant and the Southfield Store Cafe, two of the best restaurants in the Berkshires.
Our own house is across the road and down a bit from the cottage, and has raspberry and blueberry plantings, which you are welcome to pick when in season.
We stayed at the cottage last weekend with our two young children, ages almost 4 and 2 1/2. The cottage was perfect for our needs - clean, quaint, tastefully decorated. The setting is great - off a quiet country road with a large yard for our kids to run around. The orchard across the street was also a bit hit. George, the owner, was generous to let us pick as many apples as we wanted. George was a wonderful and helpful host, available for any questions or requests we had. We took a bike ride around the area - the scenery and the colors were just amazing. We also hiked around the Thousand Acre lake - took about 3 hours as we had the kids setting the pace - the woods and the lake were so beautiful that the kids walked all the way on their own with no complaints! York Lake and the Campbell Falls are also not to be missed. Great Barrington has a great pizza place, Baba Louie's - we met a local couple who regularly drive an hour for their pizza - it's that good. Also on our way back we stopped at Stockbridge - perfect lunch at the pub at Red Lion Inn. Overall, a perfect trip!
This was our second year in the cottage, and we really enjoyed staying there again. It is quaint, cozy, clean and comfortable, and provides the quiet and calm that we seek on vacations. The local countryside offers great hiking opportunities, and Great Barrington has lots of good restaurants and markets, including a Saturday farmer’s market. We definitely hope to return for another relaxing vacation in the coming year!
This was a quiet place to go, away from city noises. We enjoyed kayaking on the nearby lake, and hiking in the nature trails with a waterfall. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. We brought tea and breakfast food, and were happy to see a tea kettle, as well as a toaster and microwave. We liked the artwork in the cabin and the way everything was layed out, it was warm and inviting. George was helpful in providing maps. There are a ton of things to see in the area. New Marlborough and the Berkshires are very scenic, and made for a wonderful vacation. I'd gladly go back.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROPERTY. My husband and I were very excited for our vacation after reading the reviews for this rental in the southern Berkshires. Based on the listing and the reviews, we thought it would be a nice, quiet place for our family, which includes two young children. We were sadly disappointed in our experience and in the owner’s reaction when we expressed our concerns.
Upon arriving, the whole cottage smelled very musty, in particular the bedrooms, a smell that only got worse the longer we stayed. The heating in the bedrooms was also a concern as they were space heaters that were very hot to the touch. The floors in the living space were sloped and very slippery, far from ideal for our 3-year-old, who kept falling. There were a few times when my husband and I even lost our footing.
The kitchen was also a disappointment. The listing mentions the coffee maker, toaster, dishes & utensils, oven & stove, and refrigerator. And it had all those, but it didn’t have some of the other things that you might expect from a rental with a kitchen, like cooking oil, salt and pepper, or clean sponges. There wasn’t even hand soap in the bathroom.
The real deal breaker for us came halfway into our trip. During a rainstorm, the chimney for the wood burning stove leaked quite badly. After a very uncomfortable night, in which none of us slept much, we decided to end our vacation three days early.
I had contacted the owner the day before for fresh towels and when he came to deliver them that morning, we informed him of the leak, the musty smell, and our decision to leave early. The first thing he pointed out was that there was a no refund policy, which we were fully aware of. Then he told us no one else had complained about the leaking chimney. No apology was offered for our bad experience or for the fact that we didn’t feel comfortable or safe staying. The owner did agree to return the cleaning fee of $80, though we spent a lot more than that for the nights we didn't stay.
Also worth noting for some, the house is near a hunting area, so gunshots in the morning and evening can be expected.
Overall, we were displeased with the condition of the cottage and very upset over the lack of compassion shown by the owner with our dissatisfaction. It indicated to us that he was only in the business of earning money and not concerned about the welfare of his renters.
Spotless rental, beautiful setting. Perfect space for our 2 and 5 year old daughters. Private back deck, lots of land for toad spotting and befriending nature. Excellent selection of books! Owner close by and very helpful when we called on him. Truly a place to unplug and relax.
Helpful information if you're visiting with small children: Garfield Beach in Monterey, MA an easy drive, free parking, pristine water with two two docks, a lifeguard and roped off swimming area. Stop at the country store on the way for iced coffee and penny candy.
Riverbend Cafe in Great Barrington is a great spot for kids for breakfast or lunch with a play space, fenced in back yard, and children's books. Baba Louie's in Great Barrington has amazing pizza, kid friendly with coloring books at the tables, and fun vibe.
Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge has an amazing frog pond, beautiful paths easy to navigate with a stroller, and wonderful children's garden with hens, lambs, rabbits, baby chicks, wishing tree, water pump and sand box plus fairy house making materials. A huge hit- we all loved it.
Pleasant Valley Animal Reserve in Lenox is a beautiful spot with easy hikes around a pond with frogs, fish, big flat rocks for climbing. Big hit with our 5 y.o.
We recently spent a relaxing, restful week in the cottage, and we can confirm the other glowing reviews of the property. The cottage is very clean, cozy, and comfortable, and we really loved how secluded it is—as city dwellers, it was a treat to relax amidst the sounds of nature. We took advantage of the easy access to hiking and nature trails, including nearby Thousand Acre Swamp and York Lake. George was very helpful in leaving us plentiful maps and guides to the area. We also enjoyed dining at the Southfield Store Café close by (really good food at Mexican Night on Thursdays!) and in Great Barrington. We plan on returning to enjoy the cottage yet again.
