Our two bedroom, two bath home is a perfect getaway for couples and families! Just 400 feet from the beach, and with a beautiful view of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, our house offers two sides of Hawaii, both the ocean and the mountains. Enjoy breakfast in the morning, watching sunrise over Mauna Kea on the wrap-around deck. Take a leisurely stroll to the beach, picnic and beach chairs in hand, and enjoy the warm Pacific waters. Snorkel in Puako Bay or at nearby Waialea Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Swim with sea turtles, colorful fish, and perhaps even a moray eel! Afterward, relax in the screened-in lanai living space, while your meal is grilling out on the BBQ. And end your day by watching the spectacular sunset over the ocean before walking back to your Hawaiian escape.
E 'Aka 'Aka Mau House (aka Laugh Alot House) is uniquely set up to accommodate family and friends, but still afford privacy. The upstairs area has a spacious living room; the cathedral ceiling with two fans gives the space a light, airy feel. This same ambience carries over to the dining area, where koa trimmed windows and wooden floors show off the 'Hawaiian plantation' decor of the room. Open the large sliding glass doors and windows to allow in the breeze! Folding doors on the side of the bedroom allow our guests to expand the space into the dining area, but also affords privacy if desired. The galley kitchen is well equipped with everything necessary to prepare any kind of meal, from a Thanksgiving turkey to Hawaiian and Asian fare. Granite-topped counters, hard-wood kitchen island, and a large, shelved pantry provide the ideal space to create meals for family and friends. And a Char-Broil radiant heat propane grill is readily accessible on the deck, perfect for grilling that special Hawaiian dish!
Downstairs, a second bedroom with sitting area and separate bath lends a 'studio setting' feel to the unit, and is perfect for teenage children or when two couples rent the house. It is accessed through its own separate door. For extra guests and/or small children, there is a fold-out sofa sleeper in the upstairs living room as well as a pullout futon in the downstairs sitting area. Finally, the screened in lanai is set up as an additional living space, with a double bed futon for those wanting to sleep outdoors.
High definition TV, DVD player, iPod dock, and a variety of movies and books are available to our guests. Fans on all floors, with a window AC unit in the bottom unit. A full-sized washer and dryer are also on the premises for your use.

We have enjoyed coming to Hawaii over the past few years, and have particularly enjoyed the unique community of Puako. It's a great place for family and friends. We feel at home here in Hawaii, and want to share that with others who visit this amazing paradise.

Puako is a very special place. It is a unique community blending full-time residents, retirees, and short and long term renters. Quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, it is reminiscent of what Hawaii was like fifty years ago. Some of the best snorkeling is available literally within a stone's throw of our home. However, we are close to other activities - including Mauna Lani Resort for golf or to enjoy a nice dinner out, to Hawi and the Kohala Peninsula to visit galleries, whale watch, and swim, and to Waimea for its farmer's market, restaurants and unique Hawaiian Cowboy culture!
The house is very comfortable and well kitted out. Our only issue was that the upstairs is not air-conditioned and it got quite hot during the day. That said, at night seabreeze cooled everything down. The downstairs bedroom is air-conditioned, which was a great relief. Given the price of other homes in the Puako area, this is a very good value.
We spent a week in Marjie's house in Puako and can easily recommend it to anybody who likes a quality time-out. We only used the upper apartment and it is fabulous, we really enjoyed it. Everything is clean and in perfect condition, and the outfitting was obviously done with much love for detail. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen well appointed, the furniture nice and comfy. We could have stayed for good!
The neighborhood is beautiful! The ocean access is right across the street, but wear water shoes, the beach is lava stones. We almost tripped over a group of resting turtles once, which our daughter loved! Great swimming beaches within three minutes by car if you're not into snorkeling. If you have kids, we recommend doing the Ocean Riders-Tour in Kona. The very nice gardener has good local tips, if you happen to meet him!

Our family just got back home from a 2-week vacation in the charming town of Puako. What a secret treasure! The house was everything we hoped it would be, and the rental process from beginning to end was seamless.
About the home- almost everything we needed was provided- from cooking utensils to beach toys, which was not only a cost savings for us, but was incredibly convenient as well. We were able to buy groceries in Kona at Costco and Safeway (of course supplementing with local flavor from the Puako General Store) and prepare our own breakfasts, lunches and dinners right there at the house.
Onsite laundry and outdoor shower helped keep the sand at bay, and made rinsing out the snorkel gear (provided) clean and ready for the next adventure!
The house is located literally across the street from a lava/tide pool beach. The beach is gorgeous, and we saw dozens of endangered Green Sea Turtles swimming or basking in the sun daily. This is NOT powdery sand, play in the waves type beach. It is a peaceful, watch the ocean or explore the tide pools kind of a beach. However, one of the best snorkel spots on the entire island is within walking distance of the house, and both beach 69 and Hapuna are 5 minutes away via car. Many other beaches are nearby as well.
The ONLY reason I didn't give a 5-star rating is that the upstairs did not have air conditioning. The downstairs room did, which made for much more comfortable sleeping. Coming from a northern state, the heat and humidity took some getting used to and air conditioning would have been nice. With that being said, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Multiple ceiling fans and oscillating floor fans are provided and provide adequate circulation and a little relief from the heat. We also grilled nearly every meal on the bbq, which helped considerably.
All in all, this is a clean, charming, perfect location for exploring the Big Island, and we can't wait to come back again!

Going on vacation to the Big Island? Stay here! We've stayed at multiple VRBO's in this area over the past several years and found this to be one of the best. The booking process was very seamless and any and all questions were quickly answered. The property has an incredible unobstructed view of Mauna Kea which makes for spectacular sunrises. From the kitchen you can see the ocean too. The main part of the two level house is situated on the second floor which allowed for great trade winds to flow through the open design kitchen, dining and living area. The property is clean, well organized and has a well stocked pantry along with all the kitchen tools you may need. The house is tastefully decorated with some nice local art. The 1st floor of the property is perfect for another couple and allows for some separation and privacy after long days of adventuring and exploring this gem of an area. The 15 second walk across the street Allows for unobstructed views of the ocean, Honu's and nightly sunsets with Buster the neighbors cat. I can't imagine a more perfect scenario. Well done!
We had an amazing two week stay in this lovely island home. Mornings were spent on the back lanai watching the sun rise over Mauna Kea. The birds made sure we were awake in plenty of time to see the sun come up. Evenings were spent on the beach across the street watching the sun set and the turtles settle on the sand for the night. The house is wonderfully positioned next to one of the best beach access paths along Puako Bay. We spent hours relaxing, snorkeling and exploring the tidal pools along the bay. Our children (11 and 9) enjoyed their privacy in the bottom suite, while my husband and I enjoyed having our own space to relax upstairs. We had a couple rain storms in the evenings, which we enjoyed watching from the screened in lanai. We enjoyed having a bike to ride to the general store or beach 69 for early morning swims. Puako is close to so many nice beaches; Hapuna Beach being our favorite! The house was fully stocked with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. We even used the slow-cooker for a meal. The owners were very attentive to our needs and responded to our questions quickly. If we are fortunate enough to return to the Big Island, we would love the opportunity to stay in this house again. Puako Beach is the only non-gated community on the Kohala Coast. Unlike when visiting a resort, the visitor to Puako Beach gets the 'real feel' of living in a small Hawaiian town, complete with a multipurpose general store, local area churches, and local area events. Beautiful beaches are easily accessible within a few minutes walk. Yet Puako is close enough to larger towns and resort areas for people wishing to play golf, eat out, or visit art galleries.
