O Cafexo is a lovely stone farmhouse 200 meters from a nice river, standing on a 25000 m2 of fenced land with many botanic varieties, fruit trees and woodland of oaks and chestnut trees. The house has views of mountains and vineyards. The river is ideal for swimming, fishing, canoeing, rowing and hiking. The property has a big space for children, including a trampoline and private marina. It is situated 55 km from Santiago de Compostela, 12 km from the unspoiled medieval town of Pontevedra and 40 Kilometers from fascinating Portugal. Atllantic beaches of the Rias Baixas are within half an hour. This is a two bed roomed cottage with a well appointed kitchen/dining area, and comfortable lounge with fireplace. In front of the cottage is a garden with a small table, sun loungers and barbeque. Under the shadow of the trees there is a hammock and swings. O Cafexo is perfect for familiar turism in the middle of the nature and yet it is not far from the main tourist attractions of the region.
The surroundings: O Cafexo is situated in the village of Soutomaior (Sotomayor-Rial), in the parish A Pedreira about 2 km from the Arcade village, known for the best oysters of the Ría de Vigo. Soutomaior, a parish belonging to Pontovedra, is situated on the left bank of the mouth of the river Verdugo, deep into the inlet of San Simón within the Ría de Vigo (southernmost of all the Galician estuaries). It is at a confortable distance from the city of Pontevedra (12 km) and Vigo (24 km). Within 5 km around O Cafexo you can visit various tourist attractions: the Soutomaior Castle with its centenary gardens, the Peneda hill with a splendid view over the Ría de Vigo and the vally of the Verdugo river. The river meanders amidst breathtaking landscapes and is criss crossed by lovely bridges: the medieval bridge of Comboa 2 km from O Cafexo, the hanging bridge 1 km further upstream and the medieval bridge of Pontesampaio in the Arcade village. There is a 18th century baroque style Church of San Salvador.
Getting There: From A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Pontevedra:
Take AP9 (E1) direction Pontevedra. 5 km after Pontevedra take the turn-off 137 to the roadway N550 direction Vigo/Redondela.
After 3,7 km turn left to enter en Arcade by the road PO244/PO2909. 265 m further turn right and drive right through Arcade along PO244/PO2909 about 330 m.
Turn left to join PO 2908 in the direction Soutomaior. Follow the road for 2 km upto a roundabout. Turn 180º in the roundabout, take again PO 2908 direction Arcade and 25 m further turn off the first road down on your right that goes to the Candan football ground. At the point where the road starts there is a school and a sports hall on the right side.
Drive 1 km along the road down the slope towards Candan. Right at the point where the slope ends abruptly, there is O Cafexo, the first country estate that you’ll find on your left side just in front of the football ground. There is a big entrance gate of stone forming an arch and a green metallic gate
Weather: Atlantic climate, rainfall 1500 mm, mainly concentrated in autumn and winter.
A lovely place to stay. Secluded and quiet and well situated for local beaches and towns. You can swim and kayak in the river just a short walk down the drive and the Masso family are very friendly. We very much enjoyed our time there.
The cottage is located in a real piece of paradise in the verdant region of Galicia. We enjoyed spending time relaxing and playing in the garden with our daughter as well as doing day-trips around the region.
The house is well-equipped and comfortable, and the gardens with extensive orchards, a hammock and access to the river are really quite idyllic.
There are many towns and cities less than an hour away that are pleasant to wander around and all have fantastic places to eat seafood and sup wine. The cities of Pontevedra and Vigo are definitely worth exploring, as are smaller villages such as Cambarro. The natural beauty of the rias (like fiords cut deep into the land) is stunning on wet or fine days. We found the beaches quite packed in August, but they should be quieter in the shoulder or off seasons.
The family who own the property (and live in another home on it) are just lovely.

Galicia is a totally different region in the north-west of Spain: it is green, has a mild climate and wonderful seafood. It is divided into four provinces namely A Coruña, Pontevedra, Lugo and Orense. Pontevedra is home to the Rias Baixas, coastal inlets similar to fjords boasting not only the best weather in the region, but also incomparable seafood and the world class white wine, Albariño. The coastal district of Pontevedra where O Cafexo is situated has a landscape that is one of the last remaining examples of medieval strip farming in Europe, with a patchwork of vineyards, pasture, and maize fields. Atmospheric tapas bars abound in the old medieval town of Pontevedra and the villages that line the coast, where delicious regional specialities can be sampled. O Cafexo is situated 55 km from Santiago de Compostela, 12 km from Pontevedra and 30 Km from fascinating Portugal. Atlantic beaches of the Rias Baixas are within half an hour. 2 km around O Cafexo you can visit Sotomayor castle.
Other Activities: Rowing, kayaking, fishing. Atlantic Islands Natural Park.
