About the property

3 bedroom, 1.5 bath wraparound porch with 3 minute walk

A 3 minute walk down a tunnel of orange, red and yellow trees during foliage season brings you to a private neighborhood lake for Kayaking and hiking. You can so perfectly picture taking the canoe/raft into the lily pads near blueberry island. Please enjoy our Kayak, raft and fishing to your hearts content. Our Cabin has a wrap around deck with a screened in porch perfect for grilling on those cool evenings. We have our ping pong table out on the deck and a variety of games to choose from (croquet) Our home is fully updated and tastefully decorated , with three bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen and dining room, 1-1/2 bath, two TVs with cable, games galore, books, music and and video library, beach chairs, binoculars, beach towels, . Other amenities include washer, dryer, iron, stove and microwave. Five minute drive to local restaurants, grocery store, picture perfect New England towns and other amenities. Leisure activities include foliage viewing, cycling, antiquing, wildlife viewing, scenic drives, bird watching, horseback riding, photography boating and sight seeing small towns that capture the beauty of rural New England. Peterborough, a short 15-20 minute drive is the mecca for antiques and restaurants. Mt Monadnock, is known for its presence in the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. It is the most prominent mountain peak between the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Berkshires. It has long been known as one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world. I've climbed this mountain and it surely is 'a little bit of heaven.'

About Kathleen Roche OWNER

My husband and I live in New York City. We work in health care and love our time with family, friends. Owl's Rest is the perfect home for play and relaxation.. Our daughter was 10 when we realized we needed a place to rest and enjoy our love of antiquing, hiking, cycling, barbeque, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding and viewing foliage. My husband is from Napa and missed the beauty of the area. When we drove to the nearby town of Peterborough, we were hooked. This town has live theatre, the Peterborough Players and the actors circle as well as McDowell circle, the oldest artist retreat performed since 1933 having actors as James Whitmore and Sam Huntington. The Peterborough Historical Society lets you discover your past. The town was a model for the play OUR TOWN written by Thornton Wilder. The towns of Rindge and Jaffrey, Peterborough, Sharon, and Dublin all have incredible antique shops, a white-steepled church in Peterborough fronts the town green and the amazing oldest public library in the country. The Monadnock music festival offers music every July and August and the incredible Sharon Arts gallery (beats shopping for art and jewelry in NYC) is my favorite. My husband loves to cycle. There are 20 lakes in the area, 5 golfing ranges and is a perfect year around recreational playground. Peterborough has the best small hospital and is 15-20 minutes away by car. Everyone's definition of a pretty town can differ, but we look for a sense of time passed by, a preservation of the past, and a very real present. The nearby towns of Hancock and Harrisville are ranked in the top ten in Yankee magazine for New England's prettiest towns.

Kathleen Roche OWNER purchased this house in 1998

Why Kathleen Roche OWNER chose Monadnock Region

We first visited this property when our daughter Rachel's friend Rose invited us up for the summer. We were instantly hooked. We bicycled all over the area. The towns that are so very near is what sold us as well as our beautiful wrap around porch, house and neighbors. Harrisville, New Hampshire, a 16 mile bike ride from Rindge on Route 137 is perhaps my favorite of all. Here tidy brick buildings and a large granite mill are strung along the millstream that once powered a woolen mill. The buildings are fully restored, and there is the internationally known Harrisville Designs, makers of looms and yarns for handweavers and knitters. If you turn right at Harrisville Designs and cross the bridge, you’ll find a group of five millworkers’ houses called “Peanut Row.” Beyond these is Sunset Beach, the town’s private little beach and a nice spot for a picnic. Harrisville is the village most painted by artists (even more than Hancock) and is one of the oldest existing textile communities in the country, a National Historic Landmark village.I can go on about the area but you have to experience it to love it

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with our large house in the woods with wraparound porch, filled with antiques and lovely art work. CLOSE TO HIKING MT MONADNOCK/LOVELY LAKE/KIMBALLS ICECREAM FARM/FRIENDLY FARM FOR YOUR KIDS AND PETERBOROUGH FOR 12 PINES FOOD AND LOCAL ARTISANS

The perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

The experience of being here cannot be expressed in photos. From the beautiful vantage point of the generous wrap-around porch, to the cozy private deck off the master bedroom with the comfy chair, to the perfectly proportioned screened-in eating space, it was a wonderful place to relax, play and share precious time with those you love. It accommodated our family of a couple, a 2 year old and a grandmother, with room to spare for friends and other family members to stay for a couple days. I loved the 5 minute walk to the beach, which made that a special destination. It was hard to decide where to have the morning coffee -- in the upstairs porch, the downstairs porch, or the beach. Dinners with soft candlelight on the screened-in porch were a fabulous ending to days that offered a range of activities for all ages (kayak rides around the pristine lake were my favorite). Neighbors are friendly, and the owners are very helpful and available for any questions during the stay via email or phone. This is clearly a special home for them, and they have generously made available many unique items that are beyond the normal vacation rental. It is a place for creating lifelong memories, and I guarantee you will want to return.

Everything I expected and more

  • 5 of 5

The house and property was perfect for our stay. What you see in the pictures is what you get when you show up. We were having a family reunion/ our sons wedding reception in the area. We had 3 homes in the area, but everyone came to our house and beach. One night we served 22 people and everything was prepared/cooked and served in this home. The front porch was amazing at all times of the day, quiet morning by yourself or in the evenings with a large crowd. Another aspect that worked for us was the porch, living room, dinning room and kitchen were perfect for the 22 people to be able to break up into smaller groups as the conversations drifted from one topic to the next.

The beach was a wonderful place to hang out especially when the temp rose into the 90's last week, everyone was swimming or sitting in the shade. Kathy answered the very few questions we had on the wifi (I missed her note in the middle of the table actually giving me the info lol)

In summary, we could not have been more pleased.

Idyllic Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Classic lake cottage, very comfy and relaxed. Tons of space on the shady lawn for kids and dogs to run and play. Good beds, good kitchen, many leisurely family meals shared on the screened porch. We ate lobster rolls and ice cream cones at Kimball Farm, watched fireworks around the lake at the association beach, climbed Mt. Monadnock, shopped downtown Peterborough and enjoyed much happy, relaxed family time. The cottage was VERY clean and well maintained. The owner accomodated us a day early with short notice. I will stay here again when in the area.

5 Stars

I stayed at this cabin with my girlfriend for a long weekend. We had a blast spending time on the lake swimming, fishing and kayaking. The house is great and the neighbors super friendly! I reccomend this cabin to anybody looking to get away from busy city life for awhile. Kimball Farms is just down the road and has the best ice cream ever! I'll definitely be heading back to the lake again.

Lovely vacation retreat

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for our daughter's wedding at Hidden Hills. The house and property was the perfect backdrop for the wedding rehearsal. The wrap around farmers porch was perfect for a large gathering and the house was beautiful. The owner was very easy to work with. We will come back to enjoy the property again.
