I am a military officer and pilot as well as a real estate professional. I have extensive travel experience and understand the nuances associated with creating a comfortable and memorable experience in our nation's capitol.
I am also a Washingtonian and live nearby. I have a very in depth knowledge of all that Washington DC has to offer and am happy to provide any recommendations to make your stay more enjoyable.
Since being built in 1880 numerous Senators, Congressmen, artists, and academics have all resided at what is now Hill Flats.
The building was previously used as a lecture hall and residence for scholars conducting research at the Library of Congress which is across the street.
Due to the buildings immediate proximity to national monuments, the National Park Service and Washington DC has designated Hill Flats a Historic building and has registered it under the Capitol Overlay and Fine Arts District. This designation ensures that all preservation is conducted under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol.
Hill Flats has been meticulously preserved while ensuring that it meets modern comforts.
If you are looking for character and historic charm there is no substitute.
Incredible architecture and historic charm in an unbeatable location.
Fabulous location and spotlessly clean. Perfect place for a stay in Washington to take in the sights. Parking to the back of the building made life very easy. All the information/instuctions were clear and accurate. Only comment was the pillows were thin and it would have been nice to have 2 each. We would stay here again if we found ourselves in Washington in the future. Great place Gene - thank you.
Great location, very well equipped kitchen and excellent having washing facilities especially for a family with young children. Only downside was the very noisy aircon units which didnt make for restful sleep.
We had 3 days in Washington as a family of 5. We wanted to be able to stay in a central location where we could walk to most places. This was ideal. Capitol Hill is quiet, but very pretty. This is just round the corner from the Capitol Building and an easy stroll from the National Mall. There are bike share access points just down the road and its close to Union Station.
The property is lovely. Its pretty outside and in. It had everything we needed. It was hot, but the property was cool. The kitchen was good enough to cook for 5, though the local restaurants are just great.
For us, this was ideal.
We stayed in this unit for a full week while visiting DC. The location was perfect! It really is just two blocks from the Capitol. Walk to the end of the street and you have a great view of the Capitol building. The Supreme Court is right there as well. The nearest Metro train station is within a 10 min. walk. This is by far the best way to get around DC. I bought a Fodor's guide ahead of time which included a fold up map which I kept in my pocket. The map shows all the metro stops too, so we just hopped on where it was convenient. There are different metro lines. To get to some attractions you may need to switch lines, but once you get the hang of it, no big deal at all) When it's 90 degrees plus outside, the metro made it easy to get around. Also down the street is a Capitol Bikeshare station. (Rent a bike.) We didn't use it but we saw many people doing so.)
Down the street on Independence Ave. there are restaurants, bars, and a small convenience store. We liked Good Stuff Eatery, We The Pizza, and farther down the street, around the corner on 2nd is Le Bon Cafe. Our last night there we left the kids in the unit and walked down to Sonoma Wine Bar for a couple glasses. At the corner of 4th and East Capitol is "The Corner Market." It's small, but has a somewhat decent selection of standard grocery items.
The unit is clean, well maintained and fit our needs well. We have two teenagers so we needed a total of three beds. My wife and I slept in the bedroom towards the back of the unit; my daughter in the middle room; and our son on the pullout couch in the living room. The kitchen and bathroom are both very nice, and having a washer/dryer in the unit was a big plus. The window air conditioning units are a little noisy but kept the unit nice and cool. We didn't cook in the unit as much as we thought we would. It was nice to have a full fridge, stove, microwave, etc., for the times we did.
If you are driving or have a rental car, take advantage of the unit's parking spot in the back alley. There's only one spot for this building so reserve it up front. You can park at Union Station, it's not that far, but not convenient either. Union Station prices vs. the building slot price is comparable.
Things to reserve before arriving: Tours of Capitol Building, National Archives, Washington Monument, Pentagon, and White House if you're lucky.
We loved every minute of our stay in this Historic 1880 Brownstone. Our family of 5 had plenty of room to spread out. We were within an easy walk of the Library of Congress (right across the street), the Capitol, many restaurants and the Metro. We used the Metro routinely to get to the opposite side of the National Mall and getting to Arlington National Cemetery and to and from the airport. Very easy to use and understand. We had no issues riding the Metro, in fact, the kids loved it. This rental is on a beautiful street lined with historic homes.
I would recommend this home for families, but not couples. The bathroom is only accessible by walking through the master bedroom. Not a problem for most families, but may be uncomfortable if sharing with other couples.
The property was clean and well-maintained. It's the perfect blend of historic and modern. The original fireplaces, wall art and overall feel is very historic and exactly what we were looking for in a rental for this trip. The kitchen is very modern which was lovely as well.
The owner provided excellent customer service. He responded quickly to all the questions we had in advance and gave us some great tips and info ahead of our trip.
