Enjoy a Secluded Location on Mount Desert Close to Acadia National Park

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,377 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom (Sleeps 8+)

Enjoy a secluded location close to the middle of the Island – the perfect spot to relax in the summer sun, walk in the woods, or take a 5 minute walk to nearby Somes Pond for swimming or kayaking. Yet, only a short drive to Southwest Harbor or Bar Harbor. Also, there are 4 separate lakes and swim areas within 3 miles! The high cathedral ceiling of the main room and many windows open to the south onto a large deck and an expansive lawn secluded from the sound of traffic.

The house sits on a 2 acre lot and is very private with woods on all 4 sides. Located nearly 800 feet from the nearest road, the sound of birds is all you will hear. The home has 3 bedrooms: 2 bedrooms with queen beds and the other with twin beds. A large, southern facing living room and dining room with a sliding glass door provides lots of sunshine and easy access to the front deck. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, large refrigerator, and all the typical kitchen appliances and supplies. The two bathrooms compliment one another: one is a self-contained bathroom with the shower, sink and toilet all in one room. The other bathroom has a washer/dryer and sink in one room with the walk-in shower and toilet in an adjoining room. This allows more people access to getting ready, do the laundry, etc. The walkout basement is fully furnished with 2 futons, a 49' flat screen TV, books, and games for the whole family. The 5,000 square front lawn provides plenty of space to play wiffle ball, horseshoes, run around, and generally enjoy the Maine outdoors, while the side lawn is fenced in and great for young children or pets. A covered brick patio offers a barbecue area.

About Michael Bush

I grew up on Mount Desert Island. I was born in Bar Harbor and lived in Northeast Harbor with my 4 brothers and sisters and two parents. Now I live in Somesville, a small village in the town of Mount Desert. I am a life long educator. I have two grown sons and a husband. I love the island and living on it. It is a beautiful place but even more that that, you can do so many things: swim, fish, climb mountains, walk on carriage trails, go boating, kayaking, canoeing, lots of places to swim in both fresh and ocean water, and most of all, it is simply one of the most beautiful places you could ever see.

Michael Bush purchased this house in 2003

Why Michael Bush chose Somesville

My husband and I bought our property with one of my sisters. The original acreage was 4 acres so we split it right down the middle. She built her home at the mouth of the driveway and my husband and I built our home at the very top of the driveway. We designed our home and I decorated and chose all of the paint colors and furniture. We wanted a property that was quiet and opened into the outdoors. Trimmed in pine with pine tongue and groove ceiling and large pine beams, the main room is the perfect invitation to the great outdoors, whether you open all the windows and let the breeze blow through and up through the sky lights, or look out at the dew upon the pines and flowers, we hope you'll enjoy things as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

One of my favorite attributes of my home is the location. It is centrally located on the island. I can drive to all sides of the island and off the island in about 15-20 minutes. This is a huge benefit! As I mentioned before, our home is surrounded by woods but we are minutes away from an Art Gallery, a small museum, and the town library. Tall pines sway in the summer breezes, and large oaks thrive just down the hill from the house. Along with this, I love the huge windows that face out to the lawn, trees, and blue sky. Every one who visits us always comments on how nice and airy our home is.

The house and setting is light and airy. Skylights, light pine finishings, and lots of windows to the outside invite you to the outdoors. Outdoors you'll find tastefully done decks, sidewalks, and plantings to enjoy, as well as an expansive lawn. You must look very hard to find a neighbor's house through the woods. Towering pines are right nearby. From 9 am til 5ish, the house is bathed in light, and as the sun goes down and the breezes pick up you'll love sitting on the deck and catching the last memories of the day. In addition to the property and gardens, a key attribute of the site is its central location on Mount Desert Island. If you are planning to take in as much of the Island as you can, you won't find a better place to reach most everything, within a 20 minute drive.

We loved this house in Somesville, so close to all that MDI has to offer.

  • 5 of 5

The house was very well-equipped for our needs, with plenty of room for the eight of us who were there. The rooms and side fenced yard are actually much larger than they appear in the photos. I hope we get a chance to return some day. Our favorite outings were sea kayaking on the west side of MDI, the ocean trail down to Otter Cliffs, and our low tide walk on the Wonderland trail, looking for tide pool creatures as the fog rode through. Also, if you like seafood, you have to visit RAT's clams and mussels, just a little north on 102 from the house--- sweetest and freshest clams you'll ever eat!

Wonderful, well maintained home! Ideal location on MDI to do everything.

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully maintained and cared for home and property. It is ideally located to all the hiking, biking and swimming. We were able to pack in a lot of activities for the week because of the close proximity to everything. Yet it's secluded from the road to give privacy and a tranquil place to relax. Great setting.

Michael and Pam were wonderful and helpful in pointing out places to see and visit and made our stay more enjoyable.

I highly recommend this home to anyone planning a visit to Mount Desert Island.

Great house for 6-8 people!

  • 5 of 5

First, the house was clean and kitchen was very well equipped. As a mother, those two things are high on my list! The house was centrally located to anywhere on the island. We went in all directions and it wasn't more than 30 mins to the furthest corner or mountain even with traffic. :) Pam and Michael were responsive when we had an issue.

Southwest Harbor is closest - Dry Dock Inn has great nachos if you are looking for a snack (or dinner), couple of good coffee shops for the morning and the largest blueberry pie at the bakery downtown. Buy groceries before you get to Island if you can. There is a decent grocery a couple of miles away from house but it is expensive. We swam in the pond just down the street and did canoeing and kayaking at Great Long Pond. It was reasonable and easy as we had no way to transport the boats ourselves.

Perfect locaiton for Acadia vacation!

  • 5 of 5

As described, the location of the property is centrally located and was a perfect spot to get to all the hiking and biking trails. It was our first time visiting Acadia so we were happy to be on the island and in close proximity to all that Acadia has to offer. The house was great - spacious and and comfortable. We stayed in for dinner a few of the nights, the kitchen was very well equipped and the dining room big enough to accommodate the 6 kids while the adults ate in the kitchen. The kids loved the 5 minute bike ride from the house to the pond down the road for dip after a long hike. We hope to make it back!
