My wife Sherry and I didn’t take years to decide on Hopkins or even Belize. It took one trip and we were sold. In the two years prior to making our trip to Belize, we took four cruises through the Caribbean. We loved the climate and the people. While on the fourth cruise we decided to start looking for our spot in paradise.
I spent a lot time on our computer, reading articles and looking at lots of pictures. Then I ran across a magazine called International Living. It focused on places around the world to retire. Belize was being featured at the time. We liked what we read. Great climate, safe, friendly people and they spoke English. A big plus for my wife and I.
So I contacted a realtor in Belize, named Donnie. That happened to live outside a small fishing village, called Hopkins. Around 1100 folks. After a couple months we planned a trip to Hopkins. It was very easy to get to from Dallas, Texas. It only took a few days to find our dream location. A beach lot, just south of the village. The rest is history, before leaving that week, we sign a contract on the lot. In June of the same year we meet with a builder that we really felt good about. By June the next year, Sunrise Cabana was finished.
Mirko purchased this house in 2012
The locals. They are wonderful friendly people, happy to speak or wave to you. You have the Caribbean Sea to the east and Maya Mountains to the west. To have a beachfront lot was a must. To sit on the porch in the morning and feel the cool breeze. And to be able to watch for a occasional dolphin or manatee. Along with lots of sea gulls.
I reserved the Sunrise cabana as a surprise anniversary gift for my husband and it will be a trip we won't soon forget. The cabana itself was very clean and had just about anything we could have possibly wanted or needed. The location was definitely ideal for excursions, little shops and several places to eat. The house being located right on the water provided a very peaceful setting for watching the sunrise from the hammock or having dinner on the large screened in porch. This is a great choice for any couple or small family/group looking for a clean, peaceful, well appointed, safe home in a great location.
Sunrise cabana was an amazing place that my wife and I enjoyed for our one year anniversary.
This is a great jumping off point for anything you could think to do. The house was very clean and so close to the water! The screened in porch was where most all the mornings were spent watching the sunrise. We ate our evening meals on the massive porch too and played games.
There is an amazing open air restaurant around the corner, a short 5 min walk, and a great place to watch the sun set over the jungle and river while you wait for the bioluminescent tour to start (best money ever spent!!!). Yes it's called a bar but not like we think of in the states so kids are welcome.
The host was great and can provide information about nearby waterfalls, cave tubing, fishing trips or jungle adventures and can even set up any excursion you wish to do with a simple call from the cell provided in the cabana. The Ac throughout the house works great but you will probably open all the doors and windows to hear the sounds of the sea and just use the Ac for sleeping, although a few naps were taken on the beach and hammocks on the porch. The kitchen has everything and more you would need should you not want to go out to one of the many near by restaurants.
Antelope falls says "steep in places" but be warned it is a steep hike with ropes and a little climbing needing for some of it. Once you're done with the hour plus hike be sure not to stop at the bottom and continue on to the pool up top, even if your legs say no, it is the most amazing view you will ever experience and only a 20 minute drive from the cabana. There is an easier waterfall in the same park, and a harder one, but Antelope is the way to go. Start early and come back to the amazing cabana beach chairs or porch for nap time.
The only thing that could have made sunrise cabana better.... A longer stay, our families and pets with us to share in this amazing experience.
This was my first time to Belize or out of the states for that matter. At 86, I had a great time. The view of the sea was wonderful. Sitting on the screened in porch watching the birds fly by was my favorite place to be. There was so many beautiful flowers to be seen. The people were so nice and friendly. Sunrise Cabana was perfect, clean and comfortable. The property manager, Mirko and Annett were very helpful. I would love to go back again.
This was the first time that we had vacationed and not stayed at a resort or went on a cruise so we weren't sure as to what to expect, but what a GREAT time! I chose Sunrise Cabana from reviews written on Flipkey. We were not disappointed!! The house was fabulous! It was clean and very well kept. There were two couples and we had plenty of room to sprawl out. The beds were a bit hard for my taste but my philosophy is you can sleep when you're dead. The air conditioning worked very well. There was a unit in each bedroom and one in the living room. The kitchen was well stocked with spices and such. I prepared quite a few meals at the house. I had everything that I needed to cook with. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that we had to provide our own purified water for drinking. I thought that should have come with the house since as a guest you would not be used to the drinking water. There was plenty of hot water for showers and plenty of towels. There was a washer and dryer available and we made use of it numerous times. We spent every morning on the deck having coffee. We had an excellent view of the ocean and our beach. It was wonderful having a screened in deck as the "no seeums" seemed to be looking for a "bite" the whole time we were there. We did not rent a car so were at the mercy of the bicycles that were provided with the house. We had a few issues with the bikes, and on round one Mirko came and saved the day with repairs. I was under the assumption that we were only 2 miles from town but we were almost 5 miles from town! We rode into town everyday, sometimes twice a day. There were lots of places to have a meal. One of my favorites was Ella's. She was very personable and had great stewed chicken and beans and rice. The best place in town to get a COLD beverage is T&C's. They had the coldest beer than anyone else by far. We also ordered a coconut cream pie to take home for treats from T&C's. We did some day trips, set up by Mirko. There were many fun things to do and they were pretty reasonably priced. One afternoon we went to the Marina, rented kyaks and paddled up the Setti river. What a treat that was! Chris was our driver for our outings and he was terrific! He was a great tour guide and had a lot of information for us when we were out. If you are looking for a great get away that's both fun and relaxing, rent the Sunrise Cabana. Belize is truly a magical place! We will be returning to it and the Sunrise Cabana!
We chose Sunrise Cabana for our stay in Hopkins based on the 5-star reviews. So glad we did! My wife and I had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Sunrise Cabana. The pictures and info of the cabana on the website are very accurate. The cabana was very clean and well maintained. The kitchen had EVERYTHING you could think of. We cooked most of our meals and found all the equipment/supplies to be on perfect working condition. There was a platter of fresh fruit waiting for our arrival which we enjoyed every day. Instead of just giving us the keys, Mirko, the manager, drove with us to the cabana and went through everything for us, making us feel right at home. Enjoyed many sunrises during our stay and a couple of naps in the hammocks on the wonderful screened porch! The beach was just a few steps away and the sand was just rippled, no shells, no seaweed. You could walk in the water in both directions without any obstructions. The cabana is a couple of miles from the actual village of Hopkins, so would recommend a car. There are plenty of local restaurants to chose from. Be sure to check out Sittee River Marina (just around the corner). For a great meal on the beach, check out Chef Rob's. We've been to Hopkins several times now and plan to return again. Will definitely stay at Sunrise again. Have already recommended Sunrise to several friends! If you're looking for a home away from home while visiting Hopkins, you need to stay at Sunrise Cabana!
This was our 3rd trip to Belize and second house we rented in Hopkins. We won't be searching for another house on our next trip - we will be going back to Sunrise. The house is in a perfect location, not in town but not too far out. Very clean, very well maintained, and unbelievable well stocked. The kitchen was amazing. Excellent beach and an easy walk to the Marina. Screened porch was awesome as well. Only 1 issue - had to put towels over the bedroom windows at night because of the street light outside. Would definitely recommend some darker shades for the bedrooms.
