This cozy home is located in the small town of Grottoes, Virginia nestled between the shade of an old Oak Tree, Maple Tree, and Pine Trees. It sits on approximately three acres with a large field behind the house where kids can run and play. In the Spring and Summer, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the rose garden in the back yard. My father passed away in March of 2017 and left behind the old home place. He spent many hours in his rose garden and enjoyed delivering them to his wife in the nursing home. Since his passing, I've completely renovated this beautiful old home on Dogwood Ave and have also began to learn the art of growing roses. My father loved to help others and loved people and I am carrying on the tradition of helping others by offering a location where folks can come away, relax and unwind. There are two lovely bedrooms; one of which has two antique brass beds. There is a special room in memory of my father who was an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition, there are games for all ages and many books and memorabilia to enjoy. The kitchen has a modern yet retro look to it. There is an old red Formica table that seats four. You can also sit and enjoy the big screen TV while seated at the bar in the kitchen. There is a coffee station completely furnished with coffee and teas to choose from.

About Karen T. Michael
I am a native from the Shenandoah Valley and currently live in Harrisonburg. I recently retired from 20 years working as an office manager in the dental field. Most folks I talk with say once you retire, you are much busier than you were before and this has proven to be true. My biggest passion is Missions. I love traveling to other countries to help others. I've visited Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and in recent years I have made many trips to Guatemala and Nicaragua to work in the orphanages and surrounding villages. When I am not traveling, I love to shop in antique stores, work in my gardens and spend time with family and friends. My newest adventure is opening up an Air B&B in my childhood home of Grottoes and I am excited for you to come, relax, and unwind.
Karen T. Michael purchased this House in 2017
Why Karen T. Michael chose Grottoes
My home place is located in a small town with a quiet neighborhood. It is within 15 to 20 minutes from the Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive, Cross keys Vineyards, Rocky's Antique Mall, Grand Caverns, The Lavender Farm, and James Madison University. My favorite local restaurant just minutes from the house is Wood Fired Oven. They have a great Steak and Cheese sub and the Pizza is awesome.
What makes this House unique
There are some beautiful old trees located at my old home place and in the summer you can sit in the shade of the old oak tree or sit on the back patio by the fire pit and grille your favorite burger or steak. Grottoes has a beautiful town park just minutes down the road with a walking trail by the river. In addition, my home place is within minutes of Grand Caverns. The cave has been open continually since 1806. During the Civil War and the “Valley Campaign” the cave was visited by both Confederate and Union soldiers. The park at Grand Caverns is filled with scenic trails for hiking, running, and biking. There are also picnic shelters, a pool, a miniature golf course, beautiful areas for fishing; and a fitness trail, featuring exercise stations with instructions at each stop. The peaceful setting at the park makes for an extra special experience here in the Shenandoah Valley!

My husband and I booked Karen's place as a getaway from DC. We were attending an event a JMU and wanted to explore for the weekend. The house is clean, comfortable, and super cozy! It was easy to get to everything in Harrisonburg and the surrounding area (we spent Saturday in Afton!). Karen was incredible to work with. We had a lovely weekend and would definitely book again. Thank you Karen!
Thank you Megan!! It was so nice talking with you all and having you stay at my Home Place in Grottoes. I look forward to having you again when you are in the area.
We regrettably arrived later than planned due to an early winter storm. Our travel day was exhausting. We couldn't have imagined any better accommodations than what was provided in this perfectly cared for home! The beds were comfortable and the new daybed, along with the coloring book and toy box, allowed our grandson some much needed relief at the end of our awful travel day. We will hope to use this home again in our travels north and south, and will feel pleased to recommend it to our friends and family!
Karen, thank you for your kind words. I'm sorry your stay was so short but I would love to have you all come back and stay again when you are passing through. Many blessings....
A great experience!
We want to thank Karen for exceeding our expectations! She worked hard to accommodate our schedule, met us personally at her home, and gave us a quick overview of all the amenities. Her home is beautifully renovated, comfortable and impeccably clean. We were in town for a wedding and only had one night to stay in the area. Having coffee, water and soft drinks available were so appreciated - as well as the delicious muffins! We have already passed along this recommendation to family and friends! We will not hesitate to contact Karen again if we're back in the area. Wish we had more time!
Jocelyn, thank you for your kind words. Although you had a quick trip here for one night, I would love to have you come back and stay again when you are in the area. It was a pleasure having you and your family.

Wonderful house! Great Host!
My husband, son and I were fortunate enough to find Karen’s rental house for a quick visit to Harrisonburg. Karen was so sweet to greet us there in the evening, make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed . The house was great! Karen has great taste and has provided everything for the best home away from home. We all slept great and the kitchen had all the appliances and housewares one needs to make great meals for the family. I was actually jealous of the huge sink! Everything so new and clean. I look forward to staying again. Thanks again Karen!
Your kindness is appreciated greatly. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and have you stay at my Home Place in Grottoes. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the future.
Beautifully renovated home in the country!
Our stay at Karen’s was so relaxing, we did not want to leave! After a long day of work, my husband and I drove to Grottoes, VA from Richmond...to be greeted by the warmest smile and homemade cinnamon muffins! Yum! We felt so completely at home in this rental...it was just the right mix of cozy and spacious! And SO clean! We were in town to attend a wedding at Cross Keys Vineyards just a few minutes away, but found it was an easy drive to Staunton and plenty of antique stores - our favorite pastime! The nearby grocery store and tasty Wood Fired Oven restaurant were a bonus for the quick trip as well! Thank you so much for having us! We would happily stay here again!
Thank you folks for your kind words. It was a pleasure having you and I hope you will come back and visit my Home Place for a weekend getaway in the future.
My Home Place is located within 15 minutes of the Shenandoah National Park where you can hike for the day and then come back and relax and unwind for the evening. In addition, you can tour Grand Caverns which is just a few minutes from the house. There is also a pool, picnic area, and hiking located right there at the caverns. A very safe and beautiful community to get away for a long weekend from the busyness of life.
