First they forgot to give us the code to get in. Waited hours. Then we finally go in and it literally looked like college kids were living there and all of their dirty was left out. There was mold in both bathrooms. The owner had their "handyman" who is actually Judy a painter go out and by bleach and new linens to clean the entire place. Grosssss

Deserved 0 Stars--Don't be Fooled by the Photos--Disgusting

My family and I booked the house for a one-week vacation in July 2016, based on the on-line photos and discussions with the owner. When we arrived at the house, it was in a disgusting and uninhabitable condition. Clearly, the on-line photos of the inside of the house were not current. They were misleading and did not accurately depict the existing, deplorable condition of the house that we had to experience. If it were possible to give this house zero stars, I would have.

For example, (1) there was a significant amount of a vomit-like substance in the bottom of the refrigerator, (2) the carpeting was covered with stains, and it had burn marks and gum in it, (3) the bathrooms and kitchen were filthy, (4) the outside shower area was littered with pieces of broken glass, metal bottle caps, and cigarette butts, (5) the interior walls were dirty, dented and gouged, and the smoke detector on the 2nd floor was detached and dangling from the ceiling, (6) there were dead bugs smashed onto the walls and carpet, (7) the lower drawer in the refrigerator was broken, and (8) the cover over the couch in the loft was stained. It was so awful that nobody even wanted to sit in the house, much less stay there.

We sent photos of the conditions to the property manager, who admitted that he was in Baltimore and had not inspected the house following the departure of the prior renters. He and the owner admitted they could not get a cleaning crew, a repairman, or a carpet cleaner to the house in a timely manner, so the owner suggested that we stay in his house across the street. A tour of that house quickly revealed that it was not comparable to what we were promised: it was dingy, old, too small, outdated, run-down, basically unfurnished, and divided into two separate units.

We left the house and I alerted HomeAway to the situation. HomeAway apologized and paid for our hotel rooms until we found alternate accommodations.

When I told my credit card company to cancel the rental charge, the owner had the shameless audacity to challenge the charge-back. Rather than apologize, he claimed that, despite the house's uninhabitable condition, we nevertheless should have stayed and therefore owe him the rental charge for the week. The credit card company reviewed my written statement of the situation and my photos, along with the owner's statement, and gave me a full refund.

In sum, this house was the exact opposite of what I wanted in a beach house.

Owner's Response: On their check in date, we received a text from their sister that the property needed an additional cleaning and that the previous renter damaged some of the property. The first text we received stated that that the cleaner had “missed quite a bit and there are many damaged items.” They asked if the cleaners could return, and alerted us to some stain in the fridge. They took photos of some of the damages, to which we thanked them and told them that we were trying to get an emergency cleaner, repair guy, and floor cleaner there asap. After letting them know that I was calling companies to come out, we spoke to them on the phone and offered for them to stay at our other property right across the street for the night while we corrected the issues and offered a 1 night discount. Our property across the street was clean and acceptable place they could stay for the night while we got the items taken care of. My family was the last to stay in the house across the street, so we knew it was clean. That was the last time they responded to us on the check in date. We had told them that the repairman would be there the next morning to do all the repairs and the cleaning, and they gave no indication that it was an issue. We left messages on their cell phone to see if the place across the street was acceptable for the night, and got no return calls that it was an issue. Since we trusted them with access to the home across the street, and we knew it was clean, we only had to assume they were staying there that night. The next morning at 9 am, we again tried to call the renter to see if they enjoyed their night across the street, and how they wanted to handle checking into the house they rented that was now clean. No one answered our phone calls. Again we texted and asked if they were ready to go back to their rental. We finally got a text response at 11:30 A.M. that they never stayed at the free house, and were not coming back to either house. As far as the one we offered for the night being old and dungy, that is a matter of their taste exclusively. We offer good rentals at fair prices and tried to accommodate this renter.

Location, location, location!!

Had a wonderful family vacation in this home. Lots of room to spread out there were 10 of us and it didn't feel crowded. Stayed in the off season and the street is very quiet and oh so convenient. Cars never left the driveway. oh and the drive way is very large!! We had 5 cars in the driveway and room for more. Home needed some TLC but it was the end of the season and I'm sure that had everything to do with that. Our stay was not about the house it was about the family in it. Owner was very nice.Hope to stay there again sometime.

Great location and space, just a little rundown

The house itself was great and perfectly accomodated my large group. Perfect location in walking distance to EVERYTHING (beach, bars, restaurants, etc). The house had some issues- dirty rugs, broken coffee pot, broken refridgerator rack, and broken folding chair, but none of those things stopped us from having a great time.

The toilet in one of the bathrooms (there are 3) broke immediately upon use. I contacted the property manager and he had someone out to us in a matter of hours. However, even with two plumber visits in two days, the toilet never really functioned and we had to do without it.

Additionally, I wrote an email to the owners with questions 10 days prior to our stay and never received a response. I had to contact VRBO two days before my stay to reach out to the owner to ensure I was still going to be able to stay there. This was stressful, but everything ended up working out fine.

Adorable Place and SO Convenient!

I couldn't have asked for a better place to rent in Dewey. This house is so nice and clean and it looks small from the outside, but it is huge on the inside. It's in a great location and is walking distance to everything in Dewey. This is the place to rent in Dewey Beach! I would recommend this property over and over again. Thanks again, Sam!

More house than you would think

From outside, this house appears to be a small cottage, but inside the rooms are open and feel larger than they may be. Separate Sun Room, Living Room, and Dining Room insure sharing the space provides opportunities to either be together or have your own space without being relegated to a bedroom. Three full bathrooms makes for harmony for everyone sharing the space. Kitchen is compact, but easy to maneuver and very functional. Mud room and laundry facilities are a great bonus. Second year here and totally happy.
