Imagine sitting on the long lakeside deck of this home at twilight, watching the sun set over the gardens as the peeper frogs begin to chirp. The sounds of nature, the ripple of the lake, the scent of honeysuckle on a summer breeze…and when night falls, take the row boat out on the lake by moonshine and the light of a sky full of stars.
There are no motor boats to disturb Silver Lake, one of the largest private lakes in Dutchess County. There is a rowboat, perfect for trips to the middle of the lake for swimming and fishing, tethered to a private dock. For a speedier trip around the lake, try the canoe and two kayaks parked on a private gravel beach.
A screened-in porch, which has a translucent roof to let in sun but keep out rain, is a great spot for breakfast or a BBQ cooked on the charcoal grill or in the large, full-service kitchen adjacent to the porch.
There are three bedrooms, a study and kitchen with cable television, and a living room and sitting room with lake views. Each room is filled with windows—blurring the lines between indoors and out—home, lake and woodland. Two upstairs balconies also overlook the lake, as does the shower in the upstairs bath.
This property has been landscaped by the owner, a professional garden designer, to combine the best of the natural world and modern home living. The cottage-style, cedar-sided house is surrounded by ornamental gardens, including a full sun garden, shade and woodland garden areas, and a bountiful perennial garden adjacent to the deck. The organic vegetable garden, full of fresh tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, beans and other goodies, is also accessible to vacationers.
There is a new washer and dryer in the basement, as well as a bicycle, ping pong table, and a box of lawn games. There is Wi-Fi throughout the house, plenty of closet space, and a collection of board games. Cats are welcome, as are non-barking well-behaved dogs.
The towns of Rhinebeck and Red Hook are 12 minutes away, while Tivoli (20 minutes), the small city of Kingston (25) which has the Ulster County Performing Arts Center, the larger city of Poughkeepsie (35) for the Bardavon Theatre, and the upscale towns of Millbrook (25), Hudson (40) and Woodstock (40) are all within easy driving distance.
There are hiking trails in every direction, including along the Hudson River and in the Catskill Mountains to the west and Bash Bish waterfall to the northeast. For safe cycling go to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. Bard and Vassar Colleges feature art galleries, performances, entertainment and dancing at the Spiegeltent, and the Frank Gehry-designed Fischer Center for Theater. The closest towns of Rhinebeck and Red Hook have an independent movie theater and a multiplex, and the Dutchess County Fairgrounds hosts the weeklong fair and other events. The FDR Museum and home is just south in Hyde Park. There are several golf courses nearby and dozens of excellent restaurants, including those of the Culinary Institute of America. The Omega Institute is 10 minutes away and there are several yoga studios right in the village of Rhinebeck.
This is a charming and well situated home. If you have any questions during your stay, the owner lives 15 minutes away and is extremely conscientious about helping whenever it is needed.
The owner is a professional garden designer and gardener who spends her days making properties welcoming and beautiful. She loves nature, knitting, and lots and lots of sunlight. She lives only 15 minutes away and is available to help whenever needed.
Randi Sackheim purchased this chateau / country house in 2003
This house was built from scratch in 2003 to have all the amenities for any season while still being beautiful and connected with the gardens and lake. The owner has a long history with the Rhinebeck area, having raised her son there many years ago.
Private lake, boating, beautiful gardens, organic vegetable garden. What most everyone feels when here is peace. It is the loveliest of spots with its broad expanse of calm lake, serene woodlands and a charming and very livable home.
I rented Randi's place for a work weekend in the Rhinebeck area. Myself and two others needed a place to stay after very busy and hectic work days. We couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The feeling of comfort hits as soon as you drive in and continues throughout the house and into the beautiful deck on the lake. I can't express enough what a great place this is to go to just unwind and relax. Everything has been thought of for comfort. The kitchen, the furnishings, the bathrooms, were all put together to make our stay comfortable. Once we stepped inside we knew that we had the perfect spot. I wished I was there for a week! You can't go wrong.
I spent a week here with my husband and a couple of friends. The house is both lovely and homey, helping us to feel comfortable and relaxed. The lake was wonderful to view while eating and hanging out together. I have rarely spent time in a place so charming. It was a pleasure staying here, and the owner was very friendly and accommodating. I look forward to staying here again.
We have been intrigued with the Rhinebeck area for several years. Like the small town feel with the sophisticated charm of a metropolitan center. Decided to rent a house for 10 days to see if this area is a place where we could settle into. Wanted to be on a lake and close to town. This house suited the bill perfectly. Owner met us upon our arrival to go over the ins and outs of the house. Said to call anytime if we had questions or problems with the house. Had none. Charming house sitting on the edge of a beautiful lake with swimming (July the water was warn enough to swim in), boating (no power boats) and fishing. Facing west the house was drenched in afternoon sun and sunsets across the lake. The house was laid out nicely with a farm style fully equipped kitchen with a large country table in the middle. Very cozy. Bedrooms and baths well furnished and comfortable. A vegetable and herb garden was outside the kitchen door for all to use and enjoy. Deck overlooking the lake was a nice place to watch the sun go down. Very private yet only a 12/15 minute drive to Rhinebeck. The house had everything we were looking for. Wanted to rent it again in the summer on 2016 but it was booked solid. Our loss.
My family and I have stayed at the beautiful and peaceful house for several years now in the fall. We bring our dog and she is just as comfortable. As others have said, the kitchen is perfect for preparing any meal you can imagine. Right out the kitchen door I'm picking fresh herbs and seasonal vegetables. The grocery stores are close and a really nice farmers market too. We cook local and fresh items on the grill by the lake. We paddle, hike and relax, relax, relax. The mornings are quiet for reflection, we watch the sun rise over the lake while we enjoy our coffe & tea. You never really have to leave, but we do to go sightseeing in the area. We can't wait to get back to the house to relax and enjoy it. The bedrooms are very comfortable and sleep comes easy, you rise to the sound of nature, the birds are singing the sun shines through. Total serenity. A great place to get away to. We
hate to leave and we plan our next trip as soon as we get home! The homeowner is so warm and welcoming. She wants you to love her home and be as comfortable as she is. She takes pride in her home and you can feel it all around you. She is available and quick to respond if you need anything. The home is very clean and has everything you need.
This picturesque house on Silver Lake is the perfect place to relax without getting too far from civilization. I rented this for a week in July with a friend and her senior mini dachshund. We were looking a place to just get away, catch up on sleep, and occasionally paddle around on a lake and this rental delivered. At night there are no lights around and all you can hear are the frogs and acorns falling on the deck. We were thoroughly happy with everything this rental offered.
When we did need to get any supplies or when we went out for my friends birthday, downtown Rhinebeck is no more than 15 minutes away. It's a lovely town with lots of nice shops and restaurants.
The house is exactly what it looks like in the pictures, the kitchen is wonderful to cook in, and the lake is relaxing with few people on it. I would love to visit again and would recommend this rental to anyone that's looking to relax and likes what they see in the listing.
We rented this place last summer for 8 weeks and absolutely fell in love with it. (We were going to rent it again for this summer but ended up buying in the area, partially because our experience on Silver Lake was so divine.) The house, property, gardens, location and owner are all excellent-- we cannot say enough positive things about the owner and this place. (We were lucky enough to spend this Memorial Day weekend there as well so you can consider the comments "up-to-date"....)
Hikes abound...and for a real treat, take the 30-minute hike to the fire tower on top of Stissing Mountain. The views from the tower, including dozens of miles in every direction and hawks soaring at eye level close to the tower, are unbelievable. And only a short drive in the opposite direction brings you to the Catskills for spectacular hikes and drives. Walking the trails along the Hudson River also makes for a beautiful stroll.
The towns of Rhinbeck, Hudson, and Millbrook make for great shopping and antiquing, and have many fine dining restaurants.
There are several spectacular public gardens in the area such as Innisfree in Millbrook and Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring.
The nearby rail trails are perfect for safe family cycling.
There is a farmer's market every Sunday in Rhinebeck as well as others in nearby towns.
Several local farms sell fresh meats and produce on site all week long.
The area has many 'pick your own' farms from strawberries in June, peaches and blueberries in July and August, and apples and pears in late summer. And, of course, there is fresh corn available for most of the summer.
