Paradise overlooking the Douro River

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just spent 5 wonderful days at Vista Alegre. Fernando and Olga call the "cottage" their little piece of Paradise in the Douro Valley. However, the "cottage" is really a comfortable, clean and well equipped three bedroom, three bathroom home overlooking the Douro River. The location is Paradise! The view is so beautiful and the home so relaxing we had trouble mustering the will to venture out and experience what the Douro Valley has to offer! When we did explore, it was great.

Fernando is a terrific host who provides several itineraries to help you explore. Our favorite was to take the train along the river to Tua for lunch. We met a lady named Lucinda on this trip. Lucinda is in her eighties and was visiting the spa across the river for arthritus treatments. She grew up on a farm near the river and was back on sort of a pilgramage. She told us all about the river as it was when she was a child, but was sad that it had changed from being rocky and wild to deeper now to accommodate the tour boats. However, as we approached Tua, she looked outside and with a big smile and laughing voice exclaimed "Oh, look, it is my river." What a special moment that was.

If you plan to visit Oporto, we highly recommend that you spend some time at the cottage. Read a book, BBQ Portuguese style, watch the lazy river flow by and the periodic tour boats motor up and down the river. Above all drink Port and Douro Valley wines and relax.

Gorgeous place

  • 4 of 5

Gorgeous place inside and out with plenty of trees (figs, etc). Very well equipped cottage with everything you could need, Fernando also provided us with a cell phone and GPS while we were there which was a nice touch. The outdoor BBQ is great.Good location close to train station. the train to Porto takes about 1 and 1 2 hours. I recommend that a hand-written map from the Ruinas crossroad sign be provided to future occupants to make finding the cottage easier. Incredible view of the Duoro, very private location.

Wonderful property in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a most enjoyable week in delightful home. They was very informative and we really felt welcome. The cottage has a great standard and with its three bedrooms enough space for two-three families.

A truly beautiful setting hanging over the Douro river and a spacious wrap-around patio with two granite tables and benches made our outdoor breakfasts and evening dinners memorable. The interior is spacious and well appointed with comfortable furniture and lovely decorative accents. The weather was nearly perfect so we didn't get a chance to use the large dining table as we ate all of the meals we had at the house outside on the patio.

The internet come properly within cottage . We made use .

The outlook from the terrace feels like looking out onto a stage although quiet and peaceful there is always something new to see. It was just wonderful .

The area of the Douro and its environs is beautiful, with mountains rising from the riverbank and vineyards everywhere, with small villages tucked here and there. Although we found ourselves lost a number of times in our travels, that wasn't really a minus as it just enabled us to discover more of the area's charms.

The host gave as a great welcome and helpful tips on places to go and restaurants that they recommended. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. The value for what you get is almost unbelieveable.

The pictures on Trip Advisor or Homeaway.com truly do not do this rental property justice. You have to be there to really appreciate it

The only negative, we didnt spend long enough there.

  • 4 of 5

We had an amazing time, perfect views a lovely fireplace at night time.

The kitchen was very clean and well equipt.

It was more than what was in the photos advertised.

The patio was a great place to have our breakfast while the sun shined and boats past ,the lushous views of the valleys reached are morning glory.

A peaceful setting the perfect place for a romantic time with your loved ones.

Fernando and Olga greeted us warmly to Portugal with a smile and an indepth details of the area and maps.
