We purchased this La Jolla custom craftsman (“arts and crafts” style) home in 2013, because we loved its unique character, serene feel, and unobstructed eastern view. We have furnished it with top quality pieces and every amenity, paying close attention to details. In 2015, we added solar PV to the roof and we are covering over 90% of our electric usage. A solar thermal system on the hill heats the pool.

Outdoor Area

The outdoor space features a solar heated pool and a large jetted jacuzzi. There is a custom, built-in gas BBQ with a granite counter. We have a large dining table with seating for 10, plus additional seating in a love seat, comfy chairs, lounge chairs, and hammock. The outside gas fire pit is perfect for s'mores. On the side of the yard are various fruit trees, including lemon, guava, clementine and kumquat. The unobstructed view stretches past the Cuyamaca Mountains to the desert.

Indoor Living Spaces

This property is unique in that it offers many living spaces, including two living/family rooms, a game room, a bedroom/living room, and seating at the kitchen island. All living spaces are tastefully decorated with solid wood, hand crafted 'arts and crafts' style pieces. All rooms (including bedrooms) have fabulous lighting, with dimmers so that you can adjust the light for the perfect atmosphere. The abundance of living spaces is a wonderful feature for extended family vacations, as the entire family will be able to spend time together, yet can also break into smaller groups in different spaces.

There are two separate living rooms, each with its own stone fireplace. One living room (the “Great Room”) has wood flooring, a high vaulted ceiling, a great leather U-shaped sectional, Noguchi glass coffee table, huge flat screen TV, solid cherry dining table with seating for 12 and caucasian rug. The other living room is smaller, with new carpeting, a microfiber couch, two leather chairs, and wood coffee table. The game room (converted garage) has a tournament sized (9’) pool table and a foosball table. The fifth bedroom is set up with a flat screen TV and a day bed that converts to a king bed, such that this room can be used as a bedroom and/or a living space. The large kitchen is equipped for a chef and is perfect for entertaining. It has custom cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The stove includes not only four gas burners but also an indoor grill. Your chef will appreciate the Cuisinart food processor, Kitchen Aid mixer, real knives, pot filler, second bar area with sink, etc. To accommodate our family’s habit of spending time in the kitchen, we have comfortable leather counter-height chairs positioned on the bar side of the huge kitchen island.

Bedrooms

This is a five bedroom home, with beds for 15 plus two air mattresses and a playard. We want our guests to sleep well, and do our best provide the ideal sleep environment. We have both light weight summer duvets and warm hungarian goose down duvets. We have over three dozen pillows in the house, from soft to firm, including goose down pillows. We even have a full body pillow.

Three of the bedrooms are upstairs; two are downstairs. The upstairs bedrooms have high vaulted ceilings and huge windows on two or three walls. This ensures tremendous natural lighting and a fabulous cross breeze.

The master bedroom is huge, 27’ long, with a view over the pool, past the mountains and to the desert. It features a king sized bed, full sized futon, flatscreen TV, and two seating areas, one with a Corbusier pony lounge chair, the other with Wassily black leather chairs and a gorgeous thick glass coffee table. The master bedroom has its own private bath, with jacuzzi tub, granite counters and two sinks, and separate toilet area. The walk-in closet is big enough for a bed, and has two air mattresses.

One of the upstairs bedrooms is furnished as a children’s room, with a twin over full bunk bed and small red sofa. There is no TV in the children’s room. The children's bedroom has a view to the front of the house, overlooking the water feature in the front yard. The other upstairs bedroom has a queen bed, a flatscreen TV, and a unobstructed easterly view over the pool.

Downstairs, there are two bedrooms. The front bedroom has built-in cabinets, and a cozy window window seat with fabulous cushions and pillows. Behind the queen bed, there is a custom designed, hand made head board that is nearly 8’ high. This front bedroom has a view of the water feature in the front of the house. The second downstairs bedroom backs onto the pool area, and has french doors that open onto the pool area. For a cross breeze, it also has a large window to the right of the bed. It has a daybed that converts to a king and a flatscreen TV.

Amenities

The house has a variety of amenities, incl. solar heated pool, jacuzzi, outdoor gas BBQ, gas fire pit, two cascading water features, decent sized backyard, outdoor seating for 16, hammock chair, pool table, foosball table, many flatscreen TVs with cable and wifi, free wifi, tons of books (children’s books, cook books, novels, biographies, etc.), board games, children’s toys, doll’s crib and blanket, and beach toys (surf board, boogie boards, sand toys, etc.) We hope to have everything that you may want in a vacation home.

Location, Location, Location!!!!!

This property is convenient to everything. It is not in downtown La Jolla, where there is only one road, in and out, with lots of traffic.

Safety / Supervision of Children

I have had many guests with small children stay at this property. Having said this, you should ONLY rent this property if you are prepared to supervise your children closely at all times. There is no fence between the house and the pool. Behind the yard and the pool is a steep hill, and there is only a small stone wall, with an opening, blocking access to the hill. The fire pit and BBQ should not be touched by children. Similarly, inside the home are a variety of items, including a glass coffee table, kitchen garbage, electrical cords, and many, many other items that could be dangerous to small children. So, please, if you have small children, be prepared to supervise them very closely both inside and outside the home.

Rules

Treat my property with respect, as you would your parent's home. Turn off lights, fans, etc., when you leave a room. Don't leave the firepit, stove, BBQ, etc. on when you are not nearby. (I've had guests vacate the house entirely when these things were on, and it is simply too dangerous.) Don't move furniture around. No smoking. Keep wet clothing/towels off furniture and off the carpet. If you may have any size event/party, let me know upfront, and provide all the details so that I can determine whether or not this is an appropriate house for you and whether there will be a rate increase. This is a quiet residential community. If the neighbors call the police for with a noise or other complaint, you will be immediately evicted. If something breaks, let me know so that I can fix it. If anything is missing, let me know and I'll replace it.

- Beaches, including: La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove, Children’s Beach, Torrey Pines Beach, Mission Bay, etc. (The house is equipped with sand toys, surf board, boogie board, children’s and adult’s mask/snorkel.)

- Watch the sea lions at Children’s Beach (Sea lions live here year round, giving birth in the late winter.)

- Kayaking and paddle boarding at La Jolla Shores (kayak in the caves beneath La Jolla, see the beautiful bright garibaldi, leopard sharks, sea lions, etc.)

Why Laura Colban chose San Diego County

I find serenity at this home. When it is vacant, it is my refuge. After a hectic day (if we have no guests), I go over and sit by the pool and listen to the waterfall. It helps me find peace.

What makes this house unique

This is a gorgeous home with incredible character. American Craftsman (aka, 'arts and crafts') home, with stained glass windows, period lighting, etc. The house has a very serene, peaceful feel to it. Built in 1972, but renovated over the last few years. We have tremendous pride of ownership, and it shows in the designer furniture.

Environmentally Friendly Home

We are concerned about our environmental footprint, and we do our best to enable our guests to minimize their energy and water use. The pool is heated with a solar thermal system on the hill, and the house has solar PV on the roof. The solar PV covers about 90% of your electric usage. You can bring this up to 100%, by doing two simple things after you use the jacuzzi: (1) put the cover back on when you get out, and (2) turn the temperature down. Guests that do this routinely rarely use additional energy above what is provided by the solar PV system. We provide a 96 gallon recycling bin, which is the largest available in La Jolla. It is picked up every other Sunday, so please limit your recycling waste by drinking filtered water from the fridge rather than bottled water, and by bringing your own bags to Costco (there is seldom room in the recycling bin for multiple empty Costco boxes.). La Jolla has a mild coastal climate and most homes, including ours, do not have air conditioning. If you are concerned, google "weather la jolla" and determine whether our property is suitable for you. We provide at least one fan for every room. In compliance with San Diego's mandatory water restrictions, which prohibit the use of ornamental fountains, we have turned off the water falls by the pool and in the front of the house. We hope to receive rain this coming winter so that the drought ends and city water restrictions will be lifted.

Bedrooms 2 and 4 have queen beds. Bedroom 3 is ideal for up to 5 kids, but can be used for a couple with up to 3 kids. It has a twin over full bunkbed and a full futon/sofa. Bedroom 5 has a day bed that converts to a king (two twins side by side.) The house has beds for 15, plus 2 air mattresses. The master, bedroom 2 and bedroom 3 are upstairs. Bedrooms 4 and 5 are downstairs. We cannot guarantee that the condition of the pack 'n play. If a previous renter has broken it, we may not know. Please check it thoroughly, and let us know if it is not in proper condition.

Perfect for our family if 11!

It was perfect for our family of 11. We had our 3 kids and their spouses, 1 toddler and 2 babies. We had plenty of room and enjoyed the pool, hot tub and fire pit. Convenient to San Diego and La Jolla. Laura was very helpful and responded to emails very quickly. We really enjoyed it!

Perfect Family Vacation

We had a wonderful time staying at this house.

It was roomy enough for 10 adults and 5 children. There was space for privacy but we really enjoyed the common areas where we could spend family time together and play games, watch movies etc. The backyard was also spacious and beautiful.

The kitchen was fully stocked. There were plenty of towels for showers and baths and that is saying a lot when there are that many individuals staying in one house. There were also lots beach towels for the pool.

Laura was very accommodating and gave us several suggestions for places to take the children as well as eating establishments close by. The house is centrally located. close to several beaches and local attractions.

The pool heater was not working when we arrived but we sent Laura a text and it was fixed in a day or so and got warm really quickly. The hot tub was also a favorite.

I would definitely recommend this home for a family gathering. We hope to come back some day soon.

Great House with Great Features!

What a great place to stay when visiting San Diego. First things first, the house itself is perfect for a San Diego getaway with family or friends. Our group of 12 slept comfortably, with plenty of beds and bathrooms for everyone. Also there are plenty of "gathering" areas with the family room and outside patio being especially accommodating. We had a great time in the pool during the days, and sitting beside the firepit & hot tub in the evenings. Truly a great, clean, and updated house.

Beyond that, the pool table and foosball table were great for entertaining, as was the outdoor grill. Laura and her husband were very helpful in ensuring the pool was kept clean and even came over to help us start the fountain in the pool.

If I'm ever planning to come back to San Diego, I would certainly book the property again. Perfect for all kinds of groups.

Family gathering

My wife and I planned a small intimate 20 person wedding in San Diego. With both families flying in from the east coast we wanted to provide a comfortable home for our guests. This property was perfect for what we wanted. Laura met us the night we checked in to show us the property and make sure everything was proper. The location was close enough for friends to experience the local attractions in PB and La Jolla while allowing us with a spacious yard with pool, hot tub and fire pit to entertain and mingle. Everyone raved about the sun rise views too! This was my first time using vrbo and I would definitely recommend this property as the owner was very easy to work with.

RATES ARE APPROXIMATE.
W/in a rate period, there is variation. Rates are lower if you are renting back to back with another renter. Rates are higher when there is a small mid-week gap between renters. Most holidays are charged at a higher rate, regardless of whether or not they are specifically listed (i.e., President's weekend, July 4, Labor Day weekend). It is not possible to list rates for every scenario.

SUMMER
There is very little left during summer, not a single whole week left. Because I have odd days here and there (look at the calendar), I have lowered the rate. I am willing to rent out for shorter periods that I usually do. If you have a flexible schedule, this is an excellent discount.

Cleaning fees vary from $300 to $450, depending on maid availability, etc.

50% is due w/ booking; remainder due 60 days prior to arrival.

SERVICE FEE
VRBO/Homeaway has started charging a 4-9% service fee for online bookings. This fee is in addition to the 3-4.5% fee that is already charged to owners for guests who use a credit card. This fee is also in violation of their agreement with homeowners, many of whom pay over $2000 per year to list their homes. If you want to avoid one or both of these fees, send me (and all owners) a message/inquiry rather than a reservation request or a BookIt now request. Once you have put a credit card in, it is difficult to remove those fees. Most owners will accept payment through PayPal (which also charges owners for credit card payments), or by check or wire transfer, which avoids the fees entirely. Most owners will provide a discount to renters who pay by check or wire transfer.
