This country retreat with a modern edge serves as an invitation to escape the city.

Two hours north of Manhattan, situated within the most beautiful rolling hills of the Mid Hudson Valley, 2.5 green acres center around the Prow Front Post and Beam House built in the mid 70’s.

Light floods through large south facing windows and skylights throughout the day onto a thoughtfully designed interior. Minimal design dictates the loft like openness of the living area with its cathedral ceiling emphasizing views of the stunning grounds with two ponds.

The rooms are furnished with both modern and vintage pieces keeping a lightness and ease around the house. Following this concept, the simple, open kitchen focuses on social interaction with a concrete top island facing the dining area.

Two large decks let you enjoy the outdoors from an elevated standpoint, almost like a tree house.

In the wintertime, a sleek Scandinavian wood burning fireplace keeps the house warm as one can’t help but to feel as if placed in a reversed snow globe when it snows.

While one pond is kept a serene place in front of a backdrop of ferns and trees, the other is being transitioned into a natural swim pond fed by a spring. In the wintertime it freezes over to serve an ice skating rink.

We are a creative couple, a photographer and a costume designer with strong love of all things beautiful. We live between our loft in Brooklyn and in this house depending on our work schedules. We travel a lot and enjoy quality time and meals with good friends.

Why owner/property manager chose Kerhonkson

We fell in love with this abandoned house and purchased it to remodel it into our minimalist zen abode. The first time we visited the site, it was January and freezing cold. The property put a spell on us and hasn't lost its magic to date.

What makes this house unique

There is something special about this property, that you can feel when standing on its grounds. The two ponds add to the picturesque setting and the large south facing window front lets you take it all in.

Beautifully realized renovation project with aesthetic choices that reflect a European sensibility

As described, an inspired physical setting with a sun drenched living room from sunrise to sunset. Wonderful interior put together by a practiced and talented eye for vintage finds along with the needed modern amenities like good towels and the right kitchenware for somebody who likes to cook. It was too cold to use the outdoor facilities though the large elevated outdoor porch with a great weber barbecue and picnic table beckoned us back in warmer weather. Accommodated our family of four with the right balance of privacy and communal living. Located on a road with little if any traffic, this little black house felt more Irish cottage than NYC upstate and was indeed a perfect holiday gateway for a family in need of privacy and down time. StoneRidge is a 30 minute drive and has all of the places for the necessary good quality food purchases, including a uniquely outfitted butcher shop and a number of highly recommended restaurants which we did not try. Our hosts, which we met briefly, were helpful and available on the rare occasion we needed help or clarification of a systems issue or directional aid. We expect to come back for a weekend when it is warm and we can wander in less challenging weather.
