Set in the old grounds of the Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz against a backdrop of spectacular views and century old trees, this exquisite apartment is all about understated luxury, comfort and peace. The master bedroom has premium queen-size bedding, direct access to the terrace and the garden, and a full bathroom. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed, walk-out access to the terrace and water views. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, fridge and separate freezer, oven, microwave, toaster, blender, Nespresso coffee maker, etc. It opens up to the wrap around terrace and herb garden where you can find a huge gas grill to cook the catch of the day or delicious meats from the town's butcher. The living/dining room is comfortable, with a 40-inch 3D LCD for your enjoyment, or if you prefer to lounge outside, you can relax in the sunny terrace on one of the outdoor sofas while enjoying the water, the Palace, the Grounds, or the star studded views. High speed internet is free for your enjoyment.
I came to this area invited some years ago, I fell in love with this old, steeped town, and the wonderful unspoiled nature that surrounds it. The town is quintessential old Europe, with centenary alleys and noble architecture, friendly, safe and quite. The pristine beaches are ranked among the best in Spain, the walks by the ocean, totally in nature, with nothing but fields and cliffs around you. The food is all natural and locally harvested, whether is the seafood, the vegetables or the beef. My apartments are unrivaled, exquisitely decorated and so comfortable, that you will want to come back, or perhaps, never leave.
All communication was dealt with professionally and within hours. Owner speaks pefect English and went out of his way to help. The flat is as beautiful as in the photos.. We would recommend 100%!
Many thanks Rafa!
We stayed in this lovely appartment for 5 days in the middle of a busy itinerary travelling in N Spain. It was exactly as described, very clean & well equipped. The only thing we missed was a kettle although there was a coffee machine. The terrace was lovely for eating & relaxing with a partial view of the estuary. The area & other apartments were very quiet. We did lots of walks along the coast, using a booklet (in English) we found in the appartment. The beaches are amazing, you just need to find out the times of the tides. This area of Spain is still unspoilt & the Euro goes a long way when eating & drinking out. We would definitely recommend this appartment.
This property must rate as one of the best we've stayed at in Europe. It has everything you could need. There are two bathrooms, each with a shower. Two double bedrooms, very comfy bed,, a lot of storage space, and a well fitted out kitchen. There is a washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer , microwave, hob and oven and a coffee machine, plus a big gas barbecue. There is a small lawn, and a large terrace with a glass surround and outdoor furniture. Whichever room you go out of you go on to the terrace. The apartment is a corner one, so the terrace is the largest and there are only terraces on the 1st floor apartments. There is a lounge/diner and a daybed by the window, a large TV and Wi-Fi. The view is beautiful, looking out over the estuary and across to Ribadeo. There is secure entry to the underground car park, and a lift - what a godsend that is! When we arrived the property was clean and is very well maintained. Thanks to Lucia and her daughter for all their help. Unfortunately we don't speak Spanish and Lucia has no English, but we managed. Castropol has number of very good restaurants for such a small place and we recommend Casa Vicente and the Pena Mar, in both cases the steaks are highly recommended, and also the lovely one by the waterfront (apologies, I cannot recall the name) but they were exceptionally friendly and this place was used a lot by the locals - always a good sign! Particularly recommend the bacala with chick peas.
Castropol itself is full of narrow little streets and most are quite steep!
Lots to see and do: a good day out to Santiago de Compostela. Castro de Coana, Gijon, Lugo etc., and the mountains are stunning. Hotel Mediante in Ribadeo, does amazing seafood, the grilled langoustines were wonderful-went back twice, just for them! Lovely hidden little beaches. Isla Pancha - beautiful, Playa Arnao etc., etc. Supermarkets close by in Ribadeo, but do be aware of closing times!
I'm trying to find something to criticise- all I can come up with is that the step from the terrace into the apartment is deep - especially so if, like me, you have a temporary walking problem - but, honestly that is the only thing I could fault - and if my leg had been fully fit it would not have been a concern.
We both highly recommend this apartment and have already recommended it to friends. We had a lovely holiday in a part of Spain that is still quite unspoilt. This apartment really is lovely. So pleased we found it!
Pienso volver pronto!!!
In this unspoiled part of the Northern countryside of Spain, you will enjoy nature, placid views of surf and mountains, what many consider the best beaches in Spain, the seafood brought to you fresh from the sea, and the quaint village of Castropol, with its alleys and old manors, set on a peninsula surrounded by the sea, on the limit between the regions of Galicia and Asturias.
Although timeless living is still the norm in this picturesque village, there are many activities in the surrounding areas, from restaurants offering an extraordinary array of tempting Asturian and Galician dishes made with locally grown fresh vegetables, fish and meat – all at attractive prices- , pubs and nightlife on the town of Ribadeo across the water, to the many beautiful and unspoiled beaches nearby: Las Catedrales, Das Illas, Os Castros, Peñarronda, Arnao, Porcia, Serantes, and Tapia. All kinds of water sports are available: sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, jet skiing, and fishing (both sea and river, including wild Atlantic salmon). There are also two 9-hole golf courses, a target range, helicopter rides, karts, and bike rentals just a few short kilometers away.
If you enjoy the mountains, the stunning area called ¨Los Oscos¨, offers many mountain hiking paths with impressive mountain views. Also intriguing are the visits to the nearby Castro de Coaña and Chao San Martin with archeological sites dating back to the 4th Century BC.
Castropol is located two hours from A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, on the Camino de Santiago, Lugo is one hour (famous for its Roman Wall), and Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias is 75 minutes away. The nearest airport, Asturias (OVD), is 45 minutes away! Castropol may very well be the best kept secret of Northern Spain! Come and see for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
