About the property

3 Bedroom Historic Lodge, Right On The Water

Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it as a rustic vacation home, perfect for families, romantic getaways, or friend get-togethers.

The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.

Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.

As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.

We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from.

There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.

Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!

We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

About Larry Bearg

Larry is an entrepreneur who now enjoys helping others start businesses. Michelle is an organic gardener and landscaper. We have four young adult children in various stages of leaving home.

Larry Bearg purchased this lodge in 2012

Why Larry Bearg chose Orcas Island

The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.

What makes this lodge unique

With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.

Lovely cabin with amazing view

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a great stay at this comfortable home. Perfect location on a quiet private beach, but just a short bike ride to town and 15 minutes to Moran state park. We were spoiled with all the amenities in this home: bikes, kayaks, hot tub, ping pong, fire pit overlooking the beach, movies, games, and a very well supplied kitchen. The kids loved having their own space in the loft. The owner provided detailed instructions which made it easy to enjoy the home and to plan our island activities. We would love to return!

beachfront!!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed five nights in June-family of four (two teens) and were quite comfortable. The lodge is historic/rustic and they are committed to preserving the past while adding modern conveniences. The best part is the location, you are ocean front and have a great views from the back porch and feel "secluded" even with neighbors. We spent most of our time in Moran State Park which is only about a 7 minute drive. The trails, lakes and waterfalls are beautiful and have multiple trails for everyone from easy to difficult. We did use the kayaks and played ping pong. The table (ping pong) is a little tricky to unfold and would be nice to have a canvas-tarp overhead so that you could play if raining. It was extremely helpful to have shampoo, hand, dishwasher and laundry soaps available for use especially coming from out of state!! The back porch is a great place to enjoy the welcome bottle of wine and chocolates while looking for otters, seals and eagles!! The hot tub is perfect after a long hike or after a quick dunk in the ocean!! Purchase groceries inland and better yet, if you can, have a cooler so that you can bring refrigerated items with you as well-groceries on the island are expensive. Thank you and we will be back!!!

Best of everything...

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location of Buckhorn Lodge! Beautifully situated for great views of the ever changing waters and skies of Orcas Island. Enjoyed kayaking and riding the bikes into the picturesque town of Eastsound. The lodge is cozy and charming, very comfortable for our family of six. Hope to get back up this way and would definately stay at Buckhorn Lodge again!

Cute house right on the water

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the house for four days and loved it. There are a surprising amount of sleeping spaces tucked into a cozy space. It did get fairly chilly at night and we had to use the space heaters more than anticipated. We made use of the kayaks, hot tub, beach access, fire pit, and well-equipped kitchen.

Words cannot describe how phenomenal this place truely was

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect getaway for my sister, mother, and I. The house is gorgeous and well furnished. There is plenty of seating for large groups of people inside and out. The hot tub is to die for! You can spot seals while soaking in the tub! When not in the tub, our favorite spot was the very large porch. You can definitely see wildlife from there and they have a large propane BBQ for entertaining.

Location: We could get to East Sound in less than 10 minutes. Travel to the South end of each lobe on Orcas was ~25 minutes. Easy access to the whole island!

House: The home is beautifully remodeled on the inside while keeping the historic early 1900's charm (This isn't any old house on the block!). The master bedroom has a window that overlooks the ocean through original 1900's glass window panes.

Heating: We were worried about keeping warm with the older windows and vaulted ceilings but they have ample heaters throughout the house that kept us toasty on the colder nights.

Amenities: This home is fully loaded. With all of the recreational toys and beach access you don't need to go rent kayaks or bikes on the island. It is well prepared for all activities!

Owners: What lovely people! We were greeted with a hand written note and a delicious bottle of wine, a good way to start a vacation! Larry's response rate is impressive and credit is due there.

Conclusion: We will be booking this place again. We cant wait to come back!

Great beachfront cabin for family fun

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Buckhorn lodge and would happily stay there again! When we arrived the cabin was clean and all the amenities were ready for use. The views of the ocean and the wildlife were wonderful, and we had to drag our kids away from the beach to explore other parts of the island. The cabin has a rustic feel with plenty of room for two adults and four kids. A well- stocked kitchen, plenty of sleeping options, and generously provided indoor fun were thoughtful touches. As would be expected with a structure built in 1934, there are some quirks (fussy septic system, chilly during storms, seasonal carpenter ants) but we would stay there again in a heartbeat! Thank you Larry and Michelle for a lovely week!

Drive or hike up to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing panoramic views of the San Juan's and all the way into Canada! Or just walk up Racoon pt. road from the house and see bald eagles and deer. Sitting on the deck of the house, you will likely see a seal pop it's head out of the water to check you out.
