Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom Historic Lodge, Right On The Water

Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it as a rustic vacation home, perfect for families, romantic getaways, or friend get-togethers.

The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.

Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.

As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.

We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from.

There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.

Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!

We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

About Larry Bearg

Larry is an entrepreneur who now enjoys helping others start businesses. Michelle is an organic gardener and landscaper. We have four young adult children in various stages of leaving home.

Larry Bearg purchased this lodge in 2012

Why Larry Bearg chose Orcas Island

The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.

What makes this lodge unique

With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.

Great beachfront cabin for family fun

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Buckhorn lodge and would happily stay there again! When we arrived the cabin was clean and all the amenities were ready for use. The views of the ocean and the wildlife were wonderful, and we had to drag our kids away from the beach to explore other parts of the island. The cabin has a rustic feel with plenty of room for two adults and four kids. A well- stocked kitchen, plenty of sleeping options, and generously provided indoor fun were thoughtful touches. As would be expected with a structure built in 1934, there are some quirks (fussy septic system, chilly during storms, seasonal carpenter ants) but we would stay there again in a heartbeat! Thank you Larry and Michelle for a lovely week!

Beautiful and peaceful property right on the water.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this home. It has everything you need for a fun and relaxing vacation. Our highlights included kayaking (loved that boats were provided!), relaxing in the chair swing and looking at the gorgeous view, nightly fires in the fire pit, restful times in the hot tub, watching movies every night, and all of the fun things to see and do on the island - especially Moran State Park. We came to this property for our anniversary, so it was just the two of us and we loved it. It is also the perfect set up for a family. We highly recommend.

Best House Rental Ever

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing five nights at the house, and fully recommend the property.

- Location: Very short drive into town.

- Views: You're literally on the beach, and have a full length back porch or hot tub to enjoy it from. We spent a ton of time on the porch.

- Cleanliness: The cleaning team deserves a ton of credit. It was very thorough.

- Amenities: The kayaks worked great! We didn't use the bikes, but I'm sure they would have been a ton of fun. The hot tub was sparkling clean!

- Communication: Larry was very responsive and courteous any time I had a question. The HomeAway app has tons of great info. Kudos to Larry for putting the effort into making it so useful.

We hope to return in the future!

Stunning place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing cousins reunion at this special spot. The view is magnificent, and there were plenty of activities for a variety of tastes. We really appreciated having the kayaks and bikes on hand as we take our exploring seriously! Larry was very helpful with our planning and making sure we had everything we needed.

It was a great place for families with kids of all ages. The kids used the dress up clothes to perform a play for us one night, and there was plenty of yard space for games. We sat around the campfire playing music and singing and really, just had the most amazing time under the endless skies.

The cabin sleeps plenty (and a few of us camped outside--we were a larger group and we just had to pay a little extra for the impact on the septic), but be warned--it is cozy! If you are comfortable sharing space with your fellow travelers, this place is great. If you need a lot of alone time/space, it may not be for you. But it was definitely for us, and I would come here every year if possible. We will be back! Definitely.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a wonderful time at the property. The old lodge is charming, comfortable and clean. We loved being so close to the beach...we could send our boys (ages 7 and 5) down to explore and still keep an eye on them. We had fun exploring in the kayaks and taking hot tubs at night. The beds were comfortable. We were able to cook many meals with the fully stocked kitchen ( I especially appreciated the good knives and large cutting boards). Location was perfect...a quick drive to town. We would have walked/biked to town if we didn't have 3 little kids. We would definitely recommend this place and stay here again.

Drive or hike up to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing panoramic views of the San Juan's and all the way into Canada! Or just walk up Racoon pt. road from the house and see bald eagles and deer. Sitting on the deck of the house, you will likely see a seal pop it's head out of the water to check you out.
