About the property

3 Bedroom Historic Lodge, Right On The Water

Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it as a rustic vacation home, perfect for families, romantic getaways, or friend get-togethers.

The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.

Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kids. The views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.

As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.

We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet so you can access your Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu service, and a VCR and DVD player with approximately 150 movies to choose from.

There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.

Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!

We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

About Larry Bearg

Larry is an entrepreneur who now enjoys helping others start businesses. Michelle is an organic gardener and landscaper. We have four young adult children in various stages of leaving home.

Why Larry Bearg chose Eastsound

The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.

What makes this lodge unique

With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.

Very peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable. The views are amazing watching the tide come in and out. The sunrise is so worth getting up for. The swing and a blanket. Our grandson loved the beach and hot tub. My husband loved the history of the property. We hope to visit again. Thank you for sharing your property!

Beautiful solitude with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

The lodge offers a unique experience of functional simplicity. Comfortable lodging with the experience of being right on the water. Great views even from inside the large living room. The deck is such an amazing feature with plenty of seating.

Kayaking was a phenomenal experience...so great to have all equipment provided.

The kitchen is large and so practical to enjoy meals right where you are.

It is a magical area and ideal for those who enjoy the water and appreciate being able to settle in with everything you need right there. We hope to return!

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

Just left this beautiful home and want to go back already! I think we all probably squealed a little when we first saw this place - we loved this somewhat rustic yet fully functional home and it's beautiful setting. My favorites were the big sunny kitchen, the front deck with a view of the water and the hot tub. Our adult children loved the kayaks, accessibility to the sweet town of East Sound and jogging in Moran State Park. PLUS, you aren't too far away from anything on Orcas Island when you have this home as your base. Larry was so helpful and kind - I don't think we could have asked for a better host. I'm telling anyone who'll listen about our perfect vacation at Orcas Island, at lovely Buckhorn Lodge.

what a view!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely family vacation here over the last several days.

The view from the back porch was spell-binding, I hadn't realized how spectacularly panoramic it actually is. The views of Mt Baker were just incredible.

The lodge was very clean and comfortable, the neighborhood was quiet, the owners left detailed instructions for just about everything.

I had to call Larry once because the power went out and I wasn't sure what the protocol was for that. He was super helpful (it was a temporary, widespread, power issue on the island that Orcas Power and Light restored within a couple hours, nothing specific to this house or the location).

Was nice to have internet service at the house, just so we could stream the Mariners radio broadcast on the porch in the evening. Just perfect.

Gorgeous location and well-equipped space

  • 4 of 5

Buckhorn Lodge's location: well, it would be hard to beat! Right on the bank facing the sunrise, with an ample deck and plenty of places to sit and enjoy. Inside, the main space is large and open, and again has plenty of places to sit or to gather around a table. Kitchen is big enough for several to work, or to hang and talk while food is prepared. Most everything you might want is there for gatherings, and much of it is of a reasonable quality, though generally well-used. Besides our family (8 folks), we had a few guests round for meals, and everyone loved sitting out to enjoy the views and the sounds of the sea. There is not a lot of public beach on the island, so the beach access was special.

Less than 5 stars because things could have been cleaner (frig, dishwasher, some rank-smelling towels, dusty-smelling sofas, bedding, and curtains). Several in our group struggled with allergies during the night when we were inside for sleep, likely due to dust, and maybe molds.

We love Orcas Island, and for sheer beauty and peaceableness this is the best place we've ever stayed on the island.

Owner's Response: We are pleased to know that our home was the best place you have ever stayed on Orcas Island. But anything less than a 5 star review is cause for concern for us. We always want our guests to have a 5 star experience! We will certainly pay extra attention to the areas you mentioned, though we can assure you that all the sheets and towels were freshly laundered. Worth noting is that any allergies were likely caused by the high levels of smoke and particles in the air from forest fires in British Columbia. San Juan county issued several air quality warnings during your stay due to these severe fires to the north and their impact on the islands. Thanks again for staying with us.

Drive or hike up to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing panoramic views of the San Juan's and all the way into Canada! Or just walk up Racoon pt. road from the house and see bald eagles and deer. Sitting on the deck of the house, you will likely see a seal pop it's head out of the water to check you out.
