Orcas Island Lodge Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom Historic Lodge, Right On The Water

Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it as a rustic vacation home, perfect for families, romantic getaways, or friend get-togethers.

The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.

Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.

As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.

We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from.

There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.

Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!

We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

Why Larry Bearg chose Orcas Island

The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.

What makes this lodge unique

With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.

Our family of 5 had a wonderful time at the property. The old lodge is charming, comfortable and clean. We loved being so close to the beach...we could send our boys (ages 7 and 5) down to explore and still keep an eye on them. We had fun exploring in the kayaks and taking hot tubs at night. The beds were comfortable. We were able to cook many meals with the fully stocked kitchen ( I especially appreciated the good knives and large cutting boards). Location was perfect...a quick drive to town. We would have walked/biked to town if we didn't have 3 little kids. We would definitely recommend this place and stay here again.

Restful and restorative escape by the ocean

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Buckhorn Lodge was everything that we had hoped for, and much, much more. The property is beautifully set on a hill overlooking the ocean. My kids and I spent many happy hours sitting in the swing on the porch just reading, drinking tea, and looking out over the water. The beach is an ever changing landscape that we explored several times a day. The wildlife right around the house kept our eyes open--from the bald eagle who flew right over our heads as we unlocked the kayaks, to the deer who visit at dusk each night, to the hummingbirds who buzz you on the porch. It really is a magical place, and I feel lucky that we found it. The house is very clean, and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need if you want to cook. The owners were incredibly responsive both before and during our stay when we had a few questions. Without a doubt, we would rent this house again.

Instant relaxation.

  • 5 of 5

What can we say, that hasn't already been said in previous reviews...? My husband and I stayed for a week at Buckhorn lodge and from the moment we pulled up, it was instant relaxation. I mean the first thing we did, after we unloaded the car, was grab a beer and sit on the swing and take in the quiet and the view. We spent the entire week, fishing on Mountain Lake, eating shellfish from Bucks bay, out with Deer Harbor charters looking for whales, and relaxing at the lodge reading our books and grilling. It really was a perfect vacation, and Buckhorn lodge was the perfect location for what we needed. I would, and have, recommended the lodge to anyone who wants a lovely holiday in the San Juan Islands!

Really enjoyed our stay. Loved having the kayaks available right by the beach and being a short drive from Moran park.

More that I expected

  • 5 of 5

The reviews on this historic cabin were all very good but the reality was even better than I expected. The views are spectacular with flat beach front and lots of rock outcroppings that can be seen from the kayaks while exploring the water and coastline.

The cabin is set up to accommodate a variety of people (teenagers) so everyone can have their own space or come together as a family. And yes, the kitchen was fabulous. Better equipped than my own. We loved watching old favorite movies at night as a family. House was super clean with lots of things for people to do. We even found a drawer of painting supplies to dabble with on a raining and blowing afternoon. Loved it all!

The Buckhorn Lodge is a magical place -- views and wildlife and rock skipping to your hearts content. We were a big group (staying in two other nearby cabins) and the Lodge adequately housed all of us at dinner time -- mostly outside on the lovely deck and picnic table, but we all fit inside as well. (We were 15 altogether) The kichen was amazing! Everything you needed for cooking for a crowd! (Love those big Ikea stainless steel bowls!) This is the perfect place to sit and watch the colors on Mt Baker change or to kayak out and look for porpoises. Thanks Larry!

Drive or hike up to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing panoramic views of the San Juan's and all the way into Canada! Or just walk up Racoon pt. road from the house and see bald eagles and deer. Sitting on the deck of the house, you will likely see a seal pop it's head out of the water to check you out.
