Located in the 'heart of nature' on 2 acres stretching along the banks of the winding headwaters of the Colorado River and Rocky Mountain National Park. We designed our home to fully appreciate the splendor of mountain living by 'bringing the outdoors in' with lots of 8' tempered glass windows and doors for maximum viewing, A 21' vaulted ceiling, and numerous skylights throughout to give a light and open feeling.
Bedrooms : Each bedroom has its own private bath which makes this home ideal for up to 3 couples. The Master Bedroom (with King bed) and the 'Aspen Bedroom' (with queen bed) are located on the main floor. The 'Star Gazing Bedroom' (with queen bed) is located upstairs and has banks of skylights for optimal viewing of stars and galaxies. This room has a private deck. All bedrooms have incredible views of the river and RMNP, the meadows, or mountains. 'Bears Den' Loft (with 2 pullout queen futons) sleeps 4 - ideal for younger children/teens. Has a great sitting/viewing deck.
Kitchen & dining: The Gourmet Kitchen on the main floor has slab granite countertops, Viking appliances throughout, including a gas 4 burner range with built-in griddle, ceramic Dacor cooktop and brass bar sink in the 8' granite center island, 2 ovens, dishwasher, microwave, SubZero refrigerator and is fully equipped for a most memorable culinary experience. Dining area, off kitchen, seats 8 at table + 4 bar stools at center island.
20' X 20' rear deck: Located off the great room overlooking the Colorado River into RMNP. The deck has tables and chairs to seat 8 with an umbrella along with multiple lounge chairs and glider. Gas Webber BBQ grill + Webber charcoal grill. Hammock off deck.
Outdoor activities: Horse Shoes provided, wildlife
viewing, campfire with log seats(be sure a burning ban is not in effect because of dry conditions). We have a great wood picnic table close to the campfire area. Help yourself to the wood. Evening time is a great time to enjoy a good campfire. Be sure to put the fire out with water when done!
If you are looking for a 'little slice of heaven,' a tastefully decorated, relaxing retreat, and ready to enjoy 'getting up close and personal' watching wildlife, you will enjoy our home. At anytime you may see a moose and baby strolling by our rear deck or elk or deer playing in the meadow or cooling off in the river. There is a well traveled game trail from RMNP crossing the river into our meadow. You can watch chipmunks, a variety of mountain birds including Mountain and Black Capped Chickadees, Crested Jays, Red Crossbills and lots of colorful hummingbirds daily. Our friendly Red Fox is a regular visitor and Osprey fly often up and down the river in search of trout. You may also see an occasional Bald Eagle, owl, or River Otter.
As natives of Colorado we have been coming to Grand Lake since childhood - it's like a magnet! Having both retired from working in real estate out of the Denver Metro area for over 30 years, we have seen lots of areas and property. We searched long and hard for our perfect, peaceful location on the river backing to RMNP for our retirement dream home retreat. We so enjoy photographing the abundant wildlife, fishing and hiking in the splendid beauty and ruggedness of RMNP, yet within 10 minutes of the conveniences that Grand Lake Village has to offer. We have only shared our home previously for 2 weeks in 2010 and 2011 with vacation travelers. This summer we are offering more time and hope whoever vacations in 'Hills Hideaway' will care for and enjoy it as much as we, our family and our friends have and still do.
Kirk Hills purchased this house in 2000
Why choose grand lake, 'hills hideaway', and this location: we are literally at the gateway to rocky mountain national park (RMNP)! Our home is located 5 minutes from Kawuneeche Visitors Center and the entrance to rmnp to go over trail ridge road (the highest continuous paved road in north america) elevation of 12,183 ft. - only 45 minutes to estes park. Horses for rent with scheduled trail rides are located at neighboring winding river campground. You can fish in the head waters of the Colorado river right from our property (fly/lures only - Colo.Fishing license required). Also, you can fish a private stocked lake ( a 5 minute walk) no license required - we must give you a guest badge for fishing. This is a catch and release lake, however, you can keep enough fish for your dinner. Boats, canoes, kayaks, pedal boat rentals or a pontoon tour of grand lake are available at grand lake marina.
Historic grand lake village is only 10 minutes away with nostalgic board walks leading to quaint boutiques and art galleries, gift shops, ice cream and sweet shops, wonderful restaurants and top-notch live performances at the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater. Public 18 hole Grand Lake Golf course is only 3 miles away and 3 other golf courses are within a 30 minute drive. Hot Sulphur Springs mineral baths are only 30 minutes away.
We cannot emphasize enough, the joy of getting up early each morning while having a cup of hot coffee and not knowing what animals or birds you may see. It is constant entertainment. One time we witnessed a whole herd of elk including babies and the bull running up and down the river, splashing and cooling off and playing in the river. These events will be engrained in memories of our stay at our cabin. These are the type of memories we want you to experience! Try sitting on the upper deck looking up the meadow (early morning or evening) and the wildlife does not even know of your presence - a good time to photograph!
Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed "Hills Hideaway"! We have been coming to Grand Lake for over 30 years, and moose, elk, small animals and hummingbirds were more abundant around your cabin than we have ever seen anywhere else since coming out here. The grandkids really enjoyed that! It is also very relaxing having the river running along the backside - great for sleeping. We had a most memorable vacation. Thanks so much for letting us share your beautiful home for a short period of time.
This beautiful log cabin was absolutely wonderful! Warm & spacious with lots of amenities. So enjoyed watching the moose cross the river! Have never seen so many hummingbirds in one place! Very convenient to Rocky Mtn National Park....Got to go whitewater rafting & hiking. Kirk & Melva were friendly, gracious hosts. Our family had a great time. Would love to come back someday!
We spent our annual family vacation at "Hills Hideaway" in July 2015. Our family consisted of grandparents, parents and grandchildren and we all had an amazing time. The house is just as beautiful as all the previous reviewers have stated. The morning and evening visits of the moose are unforgettable. The 5 grandkids (from 1 to 15 years) favorite activity was playing and fishing in the river.
Our family has rented several VRBO vacation homes and this home by far exceedes all the others in terms of amenities and the quality of everyday necessities. We cooked all our meals for 5 days at the cabin. The cookware, dishes, knives, etc were top notch. A plethora of spices were provided along with cleaning supplies and paper products. The bed linens were heavenly!
We spent the majority of our time at the cabin and loved every minute of it!
We had the pleasure of spending a week at Hill's Hideaway with our 2 children, their spouses and 5 grandchildren. Kirk and Melva met us at the property and showed us around the home and property, recommended restaurants and filled us in on local sightseeing. We greatly appreciate their hospitality and them taking the time to make sure we were acquainted with their cabin and where to find anything we may need. The cabin is spectacular both well appointed inside and spectacular scenery outside. The grandchildren loved the daily visits from moose, elk, chipmunks and the occasional evening visit from a fox. We all enjoyed the top notch fishing in the local lake and the close proximity of the ATV trails. The town of Grand Lake is only minutes away and has a nice variety of shops and restaurants. I would highly recommend this property to families looking to get away for a relaxing vacation, the cabin is fully stocked with everything needed to have a great time. Melva recommended we take the drive through Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road, the drive is phenomenal and well worth the $20 per car entrance fee. Thank you Melva it truly is one of the best drives in this country! This family vacation was enjoyed by all and far exceeded our expectations.
This is a spectacular home on the river, visited by moose morning and night. The wide open kitchen, dining, and living room open onto the deck with fire pit on one side, river in front, and moose on the other. The home is beautifully furnished, really luxurious. The only problem with this home is that you almost don't want to leave it and that is saying something as Rocky Mountain Park and Grand Lake are just two miles away. We hope to make this a yearly family retreat.
Our extended family of 10 (2 grandparents, 4 parents, 4 children ages 11-15) had an amazing time at Hill's Hideaway. The location was absolutely ideal - a short bike ride to so many things including the adorable town of Grand Lake, right at the entrance to RMNP, in a meadow at a bend in the Colorado River. Fishing, horseback riding, ATV rental, wildlife viewing all right there or a short walk away. Momma moose & baby greeted us the evening we arrived. The birds and chipmunks were amazing and we came to expect a moose in our yard, viewable from the magnificent floor to ceiling windows each night (and were only disappointed once!).
But that wasn't the best part. The best part was how absolutely beautiful the home was and how incredibly well appointed it was and how welcome the owners made us feel. We felt like kings & queens every morning when we awoke and enjoyed everything about the property. We felt very lucky to have found such a wonderful hideaway.
Thank you for an absolutely splendid vacation that we will think of fondly forever!
We had a magnificent five night stay at Hill's Hideaway full of relaxing family memories! We had lots of fun with the our two young children fishing both on the river and the private access lake! We spent one night watching a moose for two hours! We enjoyed making wonderful meals in the beautiful kitchen! The pictures on the site do not do the inside of the home justice - it is gorgeous! Our breakfast at Fat Cat Cafe was delicious and our hike to Adams Falls was well worth it!
The owners, Kirk and Melva, are genuinely nice people who take great pride in their home. They were kind and easy to work with and they really take care of you. If we are ever in the area again, we would definitely stay at Hill's Hideaway!
We are 5 minutes from Rocky Mt. Nat'l Park entry to go over Trail Ridge Rd., a must see area for spectacular mountain vistas, hiking, abundant wildlife including elk and moose and only 45 minutes to Estes Park. Horse back riding at Winding River Campground. Enjoy a good soak in the hot springs at Hot Sulfur Springs, 40 minutes away. Adams Fall is a must see water fall located at the north inlet of Grand Lake. The best spot for elk and moose viewing can be found right off our deck which backs onto a game trail entering our meadow-Keep your camera ready!
