A perfect place to make your home base while you enjoy North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains and all the activities that the local area has to offer.
The Road Less Traveled Cabin is located in the town of Piney Creek inside a gated community, on a 1 acre wooded lot that sits on the New River in a very private and secluded area. The cabin location is part of a 26 mile segment of the New River that is designated as part of the U.S. National Wild and Scenic River System- perfect for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and exploring nature. Enjoy all the comforts of home, with a stocked kitchen including crockpot, hot air popcorn maker, pots, pans and cooking utensils. There is a gas grill on the main floor deck. The dining table sits 6, with two more seats at the bar. There is also a toaster, coffee maker and a washer and dryer. All linens are provided.
The cabin sleeps 11, with 2 queen Sleep Number beds and two twin beds in the loft sleeping area, two full sized pull out couches and one twin pull out sleep chair. Please note that although the pull outs are new, they are pull outs, which means they are not the most comfortable for sleeping. We recommend that guests bring an air mattress if they are concerned about the comfort of those using the pull out beds.
The main living room has a beautiful stone wood burning fireplace and cozy, comfortable leather seating area.
The cabin has Wifi internet, Blu-ray DVD players, Netflix, and a phone. The upstairs loft is the perfect kid hangout with old school Atari (or plug in your own gaming system) and a Blu-ray DVD player with Netflix and tv. You can also play cards or board games on the gaming table in the loft overlooking the river or throw darts on the kid-friendly dart board. DVDs and books are also available. The lower level is perfect for the grownups with a foosball table and dart board, as well as a flat screen tv with Netflix and Blu-ray/DVD player. There is also a second living room area downstairs, making the lower level a private sanctuary from the rest of the house.
Outside you'll find two porch swings, a picnic table and plenty of places to sit on one of the three huge decks overlooking the New River, where you can watch the geese and hummingbirds, catch a glimpse of deer walking by or just sit and listen to the bubbling of two small creeks on either side of the property.
When you're ready to venture out there are several common areas in the neighborhood with easy river access. There is also great fishing - the New River has small mouth bass and trout. The neighborhood also has an old Indian cave where you can explore and then head down a short trail to a picnic area and bench by the river.
Other things to do in the area:
There are several outfitters within a 5 minute drive that rent canoes, kayaks and tubes.
West Jefferson is about 30 minutes down the mountain, where you can shop, take in art galleries, restaurants, farmers market, the famous Ashe County Cheese Factory, bowling, movies, or go antiquing.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is about 25-30 minutes away, as are the New River State Park, Stone Mountain State Park, Mount Jefferson State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park and the town of Sparta.
If you like bicycling then you can check out the famous Virgina Creeper Trail (50 min. drive), where you rent bikes or bring your own to coast down a beautiful trail that is great for all ages!
*The lot is steep and the walk up from the river is strenuous.
*During winter a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended during snow and ice.
*The cabin does not have a dish washer.
We are originally from Florida but have lived in Charlotte, NC for the last several years.
Heidi purchased this cabin in 2012
We love the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and have always dreamed of someday owning a place with some moving water on it. We still pinch ourselves that we found this amazing place on the New River! The Road Less Traveled Cabin has the safety of a gated community and yet lots of privacy. Great family friendly area with tons to do.
One look at the breathtaking views of the new river and the blue ridge mountains and we were hooked! We love the outdoors, and here we can canoe, kayak, tube, mountain bike, hike or just sit and stare at the river or a fire. Perfect!
We came, we hiked, we conquered. For us it was a well deserved breath of fresh air from (pharmacy/med/grad) school and work. We'll go back with memories of midnight bonfires, waterfalls, class I rapids, and the joys of sitting down to a grilled meal with loved ones. Thank you for making this dream a reality!
My family and I stayed October 14th thru 16th, the home was very inviting, and relaxing. We had everything we needed to cook meals, and enjoy our weekend. I loved having my morning coffee on the deck taking in the beauty God created!
The home is in a very peaceful, beautiful area, everyone was able to relax and enjoy our time!.. thank you both for sharing your home with us!
We were so happy with our choice to stay at the Road Less Traveled. I knew I found the right place when my husband took a few steps in the door and said "wow, this is great!" The cabin was very, very clean. The interior layout worked so well for our family. The boys loved the loft area with a separate alcove for sleeping and their own sitting area with TV. The entire family enjoyed the game table in the loft with the most amazing view. The selection of games was impressive, no need to bring any with you. The main floor was perfect, the kitchen was well stocked. There was plenty of room around the dining table and the grown ups enjoyed hanging out on in the seating area around the wood burning fire place. The bedroom on the main floor was comfortable and had a hall bath. The bottom floor was great, my in-laws joined us last minute for one night and said the queen master bedroom down there was very comfortable. There is also a sitting area, TV and foosball table on that level. We used the gas fire pit on the porch both nights. It was so quiet, peaceful and the night sky is full of stars. There is a pretty, flat walking trail down the river to the right by the bench that takes you along a creek in a valley to a gazebo with a swing. We also enjoyed the grassy common area on the river. Our dog was able to run around in and out of the river and we all enjoyed fishing. A few notes: 1) the walk to the river was more than I expected, I thought it was at the bottom of the stairs from the porch but once you get to the bottom of the stairs it is a steep walk of about 50 yards. It was no problem for us and our boys but my older in-laws couldn't make it down there. 2) There are three TV's but no cable or satellite. If you read the description carefully you will realize this as it says there is a dvd player and Netflix. I thought it was great to get away from the TV but others may not agree. We just got home tonight and said that we needed to get the mountains more often and our son added "and stay at the same cabin". We all can't wait to come back!
My family and I had a wonderful time at your cabin. We especially enjoyed sitting around the fire pit on the deck. The walk down to the river was steep, but it's nothing too bad. My 63 year old father was able to walk down. It wasn't easy for him, but he did it several times.
You can really tell the owners care about their renters through the details. They made sure we understood that they were available for any questions or concerns. Luckily, we didn't need to contact them for anything. ;) Our stay was very comfortable. The notes they provided on the "fun stuff" was very thorough as well. What a great time creating fond memories with my family! Thank you!
We enjoyed our family vacation! The cabin is delightful and has all of the amenities you need. Fishing was great by the river...kayaking from the state park is a peaceful float. We've kayaked the new river for years and can't get enough of the tranquility and ability to spend precious time with our kids.
Heidi was extremely responsive in all of our inquiries...even the last minute phone call about the common area. HINT...read of the material the owners have taken time to provide haha! As fellow Homeaway home owners, we were very pleased with our stay and appreciated all of the attention to detail.
Some of the reviews mention the hike to the riverfront from the cabin...I wouldn't complain about it because it is well published in the information. Instead, take your time and enjoy the scenery while getting away from it all.
We stayed recently at the Cabin on the New River and had a blast. We had a family of four and with all the levels, there were plenty of places to have some privacy as well as great gathering spaces for fun together time. We enjoyed the porch swings and the games in the game room. Kitchen was well stocked but would benefit from a couple wine glasses to enjoy some wine out on the porch. We did two day trips from the cabin, one to Stone Mountain State Park (the kids enjoyed the hike and swimming in the falls at the park) and Grayson Highlands Sate Park, which we were lucky to find the herd of wild ponies had many baby ponies so our girls were in heaven! River was a bit muddy due to recent rains so we skipped our original plans of tubing but really enjoyed the places we did go. The owners were fabulous and sent a huge list of activities and information about the area well in advance of our trip allowing us time to research and prepare.
Cabin is well stocked and clean. Roads in neighborhood narrow and steep a little scary for me. Would recommend improving steps down to river. The owners were great very responsive and a pleasure to work with.
