A perfect place to make your home base while you enjoy North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains and all the activities that the local area has to offer.
The Road Less Traveled Cabin is located in the town of Piney Creek inside a gated community, on a 1 acre wooded lot that sits on the New River in a very private and secluded area. The cabin location is part of a 26 mile segment of the New River that is designated as part of the U.S. National Wild and Scenic River System- perfect for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and exploring nature. Enjoy all the comforts of home, with a stocked kitchen including crockpot, hot air popcorn maker, pots, pans and cooking utensils. There is a gas grill on the main floor deck. The dining table sits 6, with two more seats at the bar. There is also a toaster, coffee maker and a washer and dryer. All linens are provided.
The cabin sleeps 11, with 2 queen Sleep Number beds and two twin beds in the loft sleeping area, two full sized pull out couches and one twin pull out sleep chair.
The main living room has a beautiful stone wood burning fireplace and cozy, comfortable leather seating area.
The cabin has Wifi internet, Blu-ray DVD players, Netflix, and a phone. The upstairs loft is the perfect kid hangout with old school Atari (or plug in your own gaming system) and a Blu-ray DVD player with Netflix and tv. You can also play cards or board games on the gaming table in the loft overlooking the river or throw darts on the kid-friendly dart board. DVDs and books are also available. The lower level is perfect for the grownups with a foosball table and dart board, as well as a flat screen tv with Netflix and Blu-ray/DVD player. There is also a second living room area downstairs, making the lower level a private sanctuary from the rest of the house.
Outside you'll find two porch swings, a picnic table and plenty of places to sit on one of the three huge decks overlooking the New River, where you can watch the geese and hummingbirds, catch a glimpse of deer walking by or just sit and listen to the bubbling of two small creeks on either side of the property.
When you're ready to venture out there are several common areas in the neighborhood with easy river access. There is also great fishing - the New River has small mouth bass and trout. The neighborhood also has an old Indian cave where you can explore and then head down a short trail to a picnic area and bench by the river.
Other things to do in the area:
There are several outfitters within a 5 minute drive that rent canoes, kayaks and tubes.
West Jefferson is about 30 minutes down the mountain, where you can shop, take in art galleries, restaurants, farmers market, the famous Ashe County Cheese Factory, bowling, movies, or go antiquing.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is about 25-30 minutes away, as are the New River State Park, Stone Mountain State Park, Mount Jefferson State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park and the town of Sparta.
If you like bicycling then you can check out the famous Virgina Creeper Trail (50 min. drive), where you rent bikes or bring your own to coast down a beautiful trail that is great for all ages!
*During winter a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended during periods of snow and ice.
*The cabin does not have a dish washer.
We are originally from Florida but have lived in Charlotte, NC for the last several years.
Heidi purchased this cabin in 2012
We love the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and have always dreamed of someday owning a place with some moving water on it. We still pinch ourselves that we found this amazing place on the New River! The Road Less Traveled Cabin has the safety of a gated community and yet lots of privacy. Great family friendly area with tons to do.
One look at the breathtaking views of the new river and the blue ridge mountains and we were hooked! We love the outdoors, and here we can canoe, kayak, tube, mountain bike, hike or just sit and stare at the river or a fire. Perfect!
We came, we hiked, we conquered. For us it was a well deserved breath of fresh air from (pharmacy/med/grad) school and work. We'll go back with memories of midnight bonfires, waterfalls, class I rapids, and the joys of sitting down to a grilled meal with loved ones. Thank you for making this dream a reality!
Pictures of the property do not begin to describe the tranquility of the area and the comfort of the home. It is all they describe and more. The home was comfortable and we lacked for nothing. The river, an enjoyable experience time and time again, and although the property is a steep walk to the river, once there, kayaking became a daily event. A day trip to West Jefferson to replenish a few basics and to enjoy the quaintness of a small town added to the charm. If you want to enjoy your family/friends, relax in a peaceful environment and feel like being home away from home, this "cabin on the New River" is worth the trip.
We enjoyed a week of peace and quiet at your cabin in the woods. It was nice to get up early and watch the deer as they wandered around the area. The cabin was clean and worked well for our family. We took a trip to the Virginia Creeper Trail and would reccommend the bike ride to anyone looking for a beautiful and easy family activity. Our anglers caught a lot of trout in the area trout streams and even caught a few bass in the river. Spent our evenings playing games and enjoying campfires. A great spot to reconnect with family . . . Thank you for sharing your home.
We had a great stay at the cabin on the river. My boyfriend and I went with 4 other couples and we had more than enough room to sleep and hangout. We spent a lot of time down by the river (I highly suggest water shoes because of the rocks) and the community area by the river. The community area was a great place to allow our dogs to run in the large grassy field and for us to spend time in the river. The community area also had a little easier access to get in and out of the river compared to right behind the cabin. We got to see many deer (which was fun for us since we are from Florida and don't get to see them often) and even a baby deer that walked right by us when we were down by the river behind the house. I also highly suggest visiting Grayson Highlands Sate Park if you are wanting to go hiking on your trip. We walked the Cabin creek trail that had a beautiful creek and multiple waterfalls, and we even got to pet and hangout with a wild pony at the state park. We all had a great time and are looking forward to making another trip back to this cabin as soon as possible.
Our experience with the homeowners was such a positive one, they were responsive each and every time I had a question. And the cabin......where do I begin? I knew the cabin would be awesome when I walked in, and my most favorite of poems, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, was posted just inside the door. The poem set the tone for the rest of the weekend. The cabin was perfect-extra clean, tidy, well equipped, perfect location, peaceful...etc. I could go on and on and on.......I have nothing but positive things to say about this cabin. Seeing the deer whilst enjoying the view on the back deck was magical! Hiking to the Indian Cave-not to be missed!
We hope that someday, again, that........
"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Thank you for the opportunity to share your home for our family Christmas "get away". The setting was awesome, the home and amenities were perfect for what we had planned. I was a little disappointed in the downstairs area. Although the weather was very nice and the temperature above average the downstairs area/bedroom had no dedicated heat source. The fireplace was equipped with gas logs, but no gas source to be able to light the logs and heat the area. If it had been cold that are would not have been functional.
My family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed staying in such a beautiful cabin on the river in the peak leaf season. We had everything we needed and more. The main floor bedroom was perfect for my elderly mother and our two teenagers were happy in the upstairs twin beds with the darts and board games right there with them and they had an amazing upper floor view of the gorgeous forest and New River. My husband and I loved the downstairs bedroom quiet time with porch swing and stairs down to the fire pit for smores and some of the most amazing star gazing I've ever seen. You could see the Milky Way! We did some baking and cooking and had all the kitchen gadgets we needed! We took a wonderful day trip just 30 minutes north to Grayson Highlands to hike a bit on on Appalachain Trail and to see the wild ponies and fall leaves. The surrounding area is so pretty and peaceful. We would highly recommend this cabin to anyone! LOVED it!
