I'm a retired interior designer. My husband and I moved to Kalispell in 2008 to join other family members who have been here for years. I'm a 3rd generation Montanan and love this state. I also love sharing this beautiful part of the world with the people who come to stay at Huckleberry Nest.
Susanna Eaton purchased this condo in 2013
Ptarmigan Village is a year-round vacation resort with charming homes and condos spread over 52 acres on Big Mountain. Even though we live nearby in Kalispell we enjoy all the amenities it provides and love to stay here often when our condo is available. Winter skiing is nearby at the top of the mountain.
Even though it is not a large place I like the layout and the open space the upstairs loft provides. Condo's in the trees are often dark but ours has full afternoon sun and 3 skylights add to the ambiance. A cozy little Morso wood stove provides warmth and charm. Free firewood is included. What attracted me most to this unit was the large deck built out into the trees. We often get visits from the mule deer that populate the mountain!
This location was a few mins drive into Whitefish, and about 45 mins into West Entrance Glacier National Park. We stayed 5 nights in this rental and drove each day, all 4 days into Glacier. We came back each day and ate in Whitefish , where we found a nice variety of restaurants. We really enjoyed Tuesday evening Farmers Market in Whitefish, lots of food vendors, great local produce etc. The unit was well equipped and had a kitchen and small stacked washer and dryer which was really convenient . The down side of this unit is that the one bed was up in an open loft , as described, but it was so hot in the loft queen bed area. I would think at least a fan up by the bed would have helped?? My husband started to come on the couch, each night, and alternated back and forth between the bed and couch throughout the night, because he would get so hot. Neither of us could get much sleep do to the fact it was just too hot up in the loft. We turned the heat very low as to make it cold downstairs, just trying to make it tolerable upstairs. This did not seem to help. Reserved this location because I saw the description and pic of the indoor heated salt water pool. I thought it would be great to go in the pool after hiking all day. We drove over to the "heated" pool and the water was very, cold and that ended that idea. There was an outdoor hot tub, that we decided to try, but it was pretty cold outside and the chemicals were extremely strong to breath in. So we only stayed in the hot tub a few mins. You can not open any window coverings and have privacy, which was not ideal. I like to open up and look out etc. This does not have any view, it looks into the parking spaces. Location, like I mentioned was great!
We used the unit as a base from which to see the area, with emphasis on the park. We were there from Aug 31 through Sept 5. The unit was well located just a couple of miles from Whitefish and a short (30 minute) drive to the West Glacier entry to the park. It is just minutes from the Whitefish Mountain Resort ski area.
The unit is very well equipped. Although there were many interesting places to eat in Whitefish, we had breakfast and dinner at the unit. The unit is well equipped and we had no problems preparing ourselves meals that we enjoyed. (Grocery shopping at the local Safeway is better if you use one of the loyalty cards we found in the silverware drawer - saved about 30% on groceries.)
A good location and a comfortable and quiet place to stay in Whitefish.
We had an excellent time staying at Ptarmigan Village. The condo was very clean, cozy, and contained everything we needed for our trip to Glacier National Park and nightly visits to Whitefish. The temperature in the condo was perfectly fine even when the outside temperature was hot. I highly recommend this condo.
We had a wonderful time in the condo. The special touches are welcoming and added to the charm. The place is impeccable.
Lovely little condo. - VERY clean and cozy with a comfortable bed and cute, efficient, little kitchen. Though Ptarmigan is an older property, Huckleberry Nest is convenient and the owner very nice.
Whitefish Mountain Resort is 1 mile away. Fabulous Alpine skiing in the winter ~ 2 zip lines and Tree Walk in the summer! Great restaurants open in the summer as well as winter. SO much to see and do!
