About Dan & Jackie Minaghan

We bought this home to make memories. We have a large family and we love nothing more than to share it with friends.

Dan & Jackie Minaghan purchased this house in 1995

Why Dan & Jackie Minaghan chose Southwest Michigan

Union Pier is close enough to everything. The house is so unique, but what sold us was that the beach was so close. Just grab a beach towel, sunscreen and a drink and off you go. The fact that the steps were not numerous or steep was an added bonus with a landing right there to just sit and watch the sunset if you didn't want to get sand on your feet.

What makes this house unique

We have worked very hard to make this our home away from home. When our grown up children visit they love having their own bathrooms. The older grandchildren love to sleep upstairs and enjoy their private loft area. Whether listening to the waterfall, feeding the fish, making smores at the fire pit, this home will surely fit your lifestyle.

One of our favorite spots is the fire pit that was made with real old Chicago bricks. Telling spooky stories and roasting marshmallows are one of our families favorite night activities. There is seating for 8 people around this and a special metal cover that goes over it for safety. Beach combing. One of our favorite activities. We go hunting for crinoids. (fossilized vertebrae that look like round stones with holes in the center) These are said to only be found in union pier. You can buy them made up in boutiques near by. It seems that everyone loves to collect beach glass, bear claws and drift wood.

the house is excellently located for getting down to the beach and back conveniently.

Dan, the owner, made it easy for our extended family to enjoy a week at Lake Michigan. He communicated promptly and clearly about details. The house provided abundant space, linens and towels, kitchen gear, and outdoor relaxation areas. We did use the loft for sleeping space for two adults and four children. It would be more comfortable with its own ceiling fan installed and window shades on the west windows. We loved the old house charm and the updated renovations. Large, open living room/kitchen is spacious.

Owner's Response: I do agree with this review, and it is great to have guest that respect your home such as these. Since this review I have added a Box Fan to help improve comfort in the loft. Their is however central air and the great room has two large Ceiling Fans and if left on it improves the loft circulation. Like I tell all my guest if you have any question or discomfort please let me or my wife know we are only a phone call away to make your stay as relaxing and enjoyable. I look forward to having then back again. Sincerely Dan & Jackie Minaghan

Great week

  • 4 of 5

Our whole family--grandparents, parents, kids--had a great vacation here. The beach was close, the lake was good for swimming, even the youngest enjoyed the sand bar. Warren Dunes is a short drive as is New Buffalo for groceries and restaurants. Dan was very responsive to any questions we had.

Great Week

  • 5 of 5

This lake house was perfect for us. 7 adults and 7 children. The kids loved the loft and proximity to beach was great. Someone was able to go home and have lunch ready before we brought the kids home. Kitchen well stocked.

Did crafts on tables on deck, read on the screened in porch, towels lined the wrap around porch. Owners wonderful to work with and deposit returned very quickly. Fire pit perfect for smores and you could walk to ice cream/gelato shop!! We had a wonderful week. THANK YOU!!!

Perfect for a large family reunion

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has 4 bathrooms that was a big help with this crowd. We had people from 80 to 9 and all were comfortable. Singing around the fire pit was great as was the hot tub if anyone needed any further relaxing. There is ample seating in the living room and it has a super HD tv for watching the Cubbies.

Short of the lakefront, this location was very handy for beach access being just kitty corner across the street. The owner is great to work with & my damage deposit was returned in days.

Fun beach cottage rental

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this cottage. There is room for a ton of people; my grandkids loved the loft. The screened front porch is great for relaxing with fans and plenty of chairs. The deck on the side has two tables and is is nice to sit on in the morning with coffee. The location is great for the beach with the access almost right across the street. The beds had good mattresses(very important!) and there are 4 baths. The main living area has tons of seating and the kitchen is pretty well stocked with pans, plates, etc(maybe get a few more wineglasses). The hot tub is a nice extra. We fed the fish in the little pond and there were birds with babies in the birdhouse. My only quibble is a small one and quite common in rentals we have stayed at. The grill grates were rusted, so we bought a grate at the hardware store and put it on top of existing ones so we could use the grill.

Your vacation worries are over when you come to Viltis Gardens or otherwise known as Gardens of Hope.

Union Pier is one of the treasures hidden with close proximity to Chicago. With miles of beaches, dunes, state parks, orchards, sight-seeing, casinos, shopping and antiquing Harbor County has a lot to offer.

With our hectic life styles we invite you to join us at our family retreat a place you can call home. There are sp,ay

You will absolutely love how close you are to the beach. Just walk out the door, cross the street and walk down to the beach. This is the perfect house for extended families. With four of the bedrooms downstairs, 3 having their own private baths, grandparents with their adult children and grandchildren love this arrangement.

The home was originally built as just a 13 bedroom rooming house. It was renovated with vaulted ceiling, 13 skylights, huge great room, and custom fireplace. The original transoms on the bedroom doors and wood work add charm to this home. The 3 season room with fans allows one to relax, read or chat. The front wraparound deck has hand carved spindles and is great for watching people walk and bike by. The side deck has 2 tables with umbrellas, an in-line gas grill and a gate so toddlers don't walk off. Included in the yard are a small koi pond with a waterfall and a custom fire pit with seating for 8. If you are there for the month of July and August there are 2 blueberry bushes you can pick from.
