'Alani House sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Honoli'i Beach is at the end of the block. With direct access to the black sand beach and lifeguards on duty, Honoli'i is one of the Big Island's favorite destinations for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing. With a panoramic view of the ocean, you can watch whales and cruise ships from the front lanais. There are 3 lush waterfalls within easy walking distance from the house.
We are only 2.4 miles (about 3 to 4 minutes) from downtown Hilo along Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast. Driving to the airport takes only 10 to 12 minutes. Before you book anywhere else, ask if there's access in and out of the ocean with lifeguards to protect you and your family. Will you be located south of Hilo and possibly exposed to dust and vog in the Puna Distric, or will you enjoy the clear skies of the Hamakua Coast? And also ask whether you'll be drinking purified municipal water or catchment instead. 'Alani House provides all of these benefits, plus wireless connectivity via high-speed internet cable modem.
Places to see:
Driving south, downtown Hilo is only 4 minutes away. Another 4 to 7 minutes will get you to four additional swimming and snorkeling reefs. At about the same distance are Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, Lyman Museum, Ocean Discovery Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. Another surf break, called Pohoiki, located at the Isaac Hale Beach Park is about 45 minutes away. While there, you are within 2 miles of the Kapoho tide pools, Lava Trees State Park, and MacKenzie State Park. Within 50 minutes from 'Alani House, you can drive to the hiking entrance for flowing lava, or to Mauna Kea where you can view the North Star and the Southern Cross in the same night sky.
Driving north from 'Alani House, you will find a scenic drive within 5 minutes, and Akaka Falls about 25 minutes away. An additional 30 minutes will get you to the sacred valley of Waipi'o. You can descend into the valley, or just take photos from the breathtaking overlook.
Are you a visiting physician and need an extended stay? We have experience working with medical staffing companies. And consider this when choosing a location, Alae Point has several advantages over Hawaiian Paradise Parks. Alae Point is only 5 to 7 minutes from the hospital and there are 2 routes to get there. HPP has only one main road and it can take from 40 to 55 minutes depending upon traffic.

We are professionals who love and enjoy the unique beauty of each Hawai'ian Island.
Rory Foster purchased this house in 2011
For us, the Big Island is one of the last havens for 'old Hawai'i.' We hope you will enjoy seeing the sea turtles (nā honu) and humpback whales (nā koholā) in their natural environment.
It is difficult to overstate the advantages of location. Parking at Honoli'i Beach can be extremely limited, and there are times when no parking is available. Staying at 'Alani House means that you don't have to worry about it.
Check-in is after 4:00PM, and check-out is 10:00AM
The home was all that we could have wished for. The rooms were spacious, the home was very clean and modern. The view from the patio's was a million dollar view. It was located to all of the places on the Hilo side we wanted to visit during our first trip to Hawaii. Rory was at the home to meet us when we arrived late (9:30 pm), showed us around and then let us get on with our vacation. We would recommend this place to stay in a heart beat.
This is a very comfortable house in a great position. The bedrooms and living area are spacious, with lots of light, and the kitchen is a delight to work in with that lovely view of the sea. Rory was always available if we had questions, and the house was well supplied. Our main problem was the weather, which was rainy at times - something you gamble on if you stay on the east coast. Another issue was the noise from the main road, which passes close to the property. It was only a bother at night and we found that ear plugs were a good solution.
We LOVED this house, and would go back there in a heartbeat !
This is an updated, well maintained home with gorgeous views. It is just a few minutes north of Hilo so it is convenient to the stores and shops there but you are in a quiet neighborhood. The home is elevated so you can sit in the living room or on the front porch and watch the sun rise or watch the ships arrive in the distance. The best surfing beach on the east side of the island is a quick walk right down the road. I've stayed at a lot of places on Kauai, Maui, and Oahu and this home was "more maluhia" (peaceful) than any other place. Rory and Wren were gracious hosts and will always be friends.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is modern, clean, very nicely finished, and easily accommodated our family of four. The view is amazing, and I already miss the mornings at this property: coffee on the front porch, watching the sun rise and spotting occasional whales close to shore.
The caretaker was respectful of our privacy, but very friendly and helpful with advice on the local area. He even let our children help him harvest some bananas from the trees.
Although we had read so much about the coquis tree frogs in Hilo and were a bit leery of staying anywhere so close to the rain forest, we slept very well and there was no problem with noise.
This property is first class inside and out.
Nicely appointed home away from home for exploring the Hilo side of the Big Island. Rory, the manager, did a great job of providing us with local knowledge and keeping the home well stocked and in tip top shape, very clean. He also gave our 15 and 11 year olds a surf lesson at the Hilo area surf beach at the other end of the block. The house has beautiful hardwood floors and granite counter tops. Only a short 5 minute drive to central Hilo. Don't miss the Snow Factory food truck at 619 Manono for something beyond shave ice. We also enjoyed Le Magic Pan for a cute crepe cafe with excellent service. The Hilo farmers market in the center of town is full of tropical fruit and souvenir deals. This home is a find! I would definitely stay here again.
Our first time to book with VBRO and we landed a great property, for our home away from home. The home is everything and more than what is listed. We found pots, and pans and lots of spices for our meals. We had a little bird nest in the orange tree out front, so everyday we got to see her on our way in and out. Rory, the property manager, was a font of knowledge.
The house is immaculate, the koa wood floors are beautiful, and the location is supreme. Our entire group said they would return to this house for a vacation. I travelled with my parents (70's), two teen aged daughters and myself. The beach down the road was a popular spot to see surfers and we took lots of pictures. The neighborhood was quiet and we received our deposit back before we got home from vacation.
Absolutely, consider this house, if you're needing a home near Hilo. It was a five minute drive to town, and hour drive to Apaka Falls and the zip line tours, and about 90 minutes to Volcanoes National Park.
