About Katherine B. Francis

My passion is design, the minute I laid eyes on this building I knew I had to have it. So much character, I even took my daughter and showed it to her, telling her I was going to buy it and what did she think?. I then thought I would have a tea shop there, as my Mother and Father are Irish. It seemed like it could be a family affair. Shortly after I purchased the building Charles Nelson who was the State Historic Architect suggested to me that I get on the Stillwater Heritage Commission, as they needed my help. Charles and I had worked on other projects in the past together. WA Frost was one and other Twin City projects. I dove into the second floor of Excelsior building opening up all the rooms that had been separated by doors and exposing brick where it would make a difference. Then the worst happened, my Mother died and my whole world feel apart. My passion was gone and the building restoration stopped. I was lost without my Mom's encouragement. So the building was rented out, left to it's own. In the last two years, I have restored woodwork and had all but one room floors restored, new windows, painting and the fun part decorating. I had a new roof put on with a new outside rooftop deck, a new deck outside master suite, complete new kitchen, all materials out of recycled historic items. New Furnace/Central Air. Tuckpointing of Exterior. It takes you back to the late 1800's with flair of the 2000's. I am so proud of the restoration at Excelsior Escape. It's fun, open and a great piece of living history. It is centrally locating on Main Street and it's a contributing part of Historic Stillwater.

Second Visit and We'll Return Again

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at Excelsior Escape, both times for a long weekend. There were four adults both times and it meets our needs so well. The bathroom update was a good choice. We love how the apartment is decorated. So many amazing touches. We love sitting on the top outside deck with the beautiful views of Stillwater and St. Croix River. We love the location right on Main Street with so many places to walk to. Katherine and her husband are extremely welcoming and available to answer any question.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words Susan. We are so thrilled that you enjoyed our home away from home. I really wanted the 'Bathroom' to be a "WOW" reaction, totally not expected. Thank you for thinking of Excelsior Escape and look forward to sharing our place again next year. ( the new furniture looks great up on the roof)

Best place to spend our wedding weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Katherine, your home is lovely and you are also a lovely host. The space was perfectly located and it was perfect for getting ready the day of the wedding. The roof deck is also pretty spectacular. Perfect for our quick rehearsal. Also, I may need to add some pressed tin to our bathroom. That was so cool! Thank you for everything!

A little slice of Heaven in Stillwater!

  • 5 of 5

My now wife and I stayed at the Excelsior Escape for a total of three nights on our wedding weekend. It was the perfect space for us to spend some down time, relax from all of the excitement of our wedding weekend and to share with the bridesmaids as they got ready for one of the days. Each room had its own unique feel and it allowed the experience to heightened only that much more. The escape was full of little areas to sit, everything we could need for food prep was there and the dual channel electric blanket was so enjoyable. The bathroom upgrade was fantastic as well. The pictures of the space really do not do the space true justice. We for sure plan to be back in the warmer months for another stay! The surrounding areas was fantastic too with literally everything you could veer need be it food, antiques, or clothing shopping. A truly highly recommended place to stay!

Charming and historic. Great Ambiance and views

  • 5 of 5

I am not much of a writer but I NEED to tell everyone that the Host's were WONDERFUL. The place was charming, warm and inviting. Lots of cool old school and quirky decorations. Upper deck has an epic view. The Pictures don't do it justice. The remodeled bath is super cool. We had ten people for Christmas Dinner very comfortable. Walking distance to all of the cool spots in Stillwater... We loved the entire experience. We WILL be back. Thank you Excelsior

Fabulous location!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was fantastic. We stayed over Labor Day for a girl's weekend, and could not have asked for a better location. The apartment is tastefully decorated and the rooftop deck is huge. On our second night there, we loved the deck so much that we just stayed on the rooftop all night instead of going out. Katherine is very easy to work with and gave us lots of good recommendations for our stay in Stillwater. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this place to friends.
