About Karen

We were the owners of an exclusive store named Peking Lounge located in Vancouver's Chinatown and have been in business since 2003. We use our house on Bowen Island on a regular basis but welcome rental opportunities as well. Currently living in Toronto now, we have entrusted the management to Heidi and Karen, Bowen residents.

Karen purchased this house in 2008

Why Karen chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

We bought this house on Bowen Island in 2008 due to its proximity to Vancouver and to all the services available on the island alone with hourly ferries. Although only 45 minutes door to door from downtown Vancouver to the house, the island's unique setting and quietness allows one to relax and unwind without having to drive for hours or having to pack food and other necessities as everything is available right on the island. Because the house is located so close to the ferry terminal and the village, it is possible to leave your car behind and walk everywhere. We are also less then 1 km from Kilarney Lake and its amazing 5 km hiking loop.

What makes this house unique

The Peking Lounge Guest House has a unique Asian inspired decor that provides guests with a sense of peacefulness and comfort. Access to Vancouver is so easy that it is the perfect place to call your base as you enjoy all the beauty and activities of the Vancouver area without having to stay in the city and often pay much higher prices. The Guest House is fully equipped for those who prefer to lounge around, relax and share fantastic home cooked meals without having to go anywhere. The house is not ideal for functions, weddings, family reunions etc, but perfect for quiet retreats or small groups of friends to spend time together. The back garden is shaded and private and features a yoga/ meditation platform.

Wonderful, relaxing stay

We had the pleasure of staying at Peking Lounge Guest House again for a wedding this summer, and it was just as great as we remembered. Check-in was smooth - even when I forgot the passcode(!) - Karen was quick to respond and we were able to get in immediately. We were only there for 2 nights but it was exactly the calm, quiet getaway we were looking for. It's in a perfect location as we had people in our party walk off the ferry. I highly recommend staying at the Peking Lounge Guest House, and I can't wait for our next stay!

As a family of six adults we really enjoyed the four bedrooms and space the house offered.

After a day of activities, it was great spending time on the outside patio. The kitchen was well equipped. We enjoyed having two living spaces - room to relax in.

Fantastic property, beautiful grounds.

Our group had a wonderful stay at the Peking Guest House. The space was beautiful and serene, with plenty of space for 7 adults and three kids. We especially loved all of the natural light throughout the main floor. Our younger guests were in absolute awe of the outdoor space, it was their own private oasis / forest / secret garden.

The house was equipped with everything we needed and we even stumbled upon some great music and games!

We walked into Snug Cove / Artisan Market numerous times each day for coffee, treats, and dinners out. Bowen Island was full of many delightful surprises and the area is just lovely. The playground and fields at the Community Centre were a real highlight, what a well done play area.

Owner's Response: Hi Jen, I am glad you had a great visit to Bowen Island last summer. The property really is a fun place for kids to explore (and also nice quiet place to meditate or do yoga is sit in the cool shade). Bowen island has a healthy population of families and children so is a good place to bring them on holiday - especially if you like beaches and forest walks. Our community school has a great upgraded playground which is open to all, as well as a turf field for soccer and tennis court. I hope you come again (we are taking bookings now for next summer - hint hint!!)

Spacious and well equipped but some issues

The house is very conveniently located to Snug Cove. The two floors made the house feel very spacious and it was very well equipped.

Issues:

1. Appearance and construction happening at the property next door which the patios look over. The use of power tools was stopped after communication, which was appreciated.

2. Bedrooms lacked air due to the picture windows, which did not open but gave lovely vistas and the very small opening window without bug screens, which let in various flying insects including a wasp that stung one of the guests.

3. The septic tank produced odours, which were offensive on the lower level, particularly in the back bedroom.

4. The mattresses were not to our liking. My husband and I slept in different beds as we were disturbing each other. This may be as we are used to a firm mattress. My daughter-in-law who is pregnant also found the lower level back bedroom too soft and had back ache.

5. The bedding could have been fresher. This may be because the duvet covers and possibly the pillow protectors are not laundered between guests.

Karen was fantastic. She was always on hand and very accommodating.

Owner's Response: Hi Helen, I just wanted to respond to the issues and thank you for your constructive and detailed comments. It is always helpful to get this feedback to help us do better - which is what we are striving for always. I care very much about our guests' comfort and enjoyment of our property. We have been working hard on these issues lately. 1/ yes our neighbours have been doing construction with machinery which is unfortunate timing with our summer season. The result though is that there is now some attractive landscaping next door if you were to peek over the deck. 2/ We have received some quotes for new screens to be made for the windows in the bedrooms, as well we have fans available for each. 3/New sheets and bedding have been purchased which we do every so often. We pride ourselves on luxurious linens like real down duvets and pillows. However everyone has slightly different needs for bed softness and I am sorry you had some uncomfortable sleeps. 4/The septic system has been upgraded which has eliminated the odour problem. Extra maintenance has to be done with a home with so many guests. I hope you will come again and give us a chance to show you our improvements!

Lovely home that was well equipped for a weekend getaway
