Eccentric but delightful space
If you're looking for a 5-star hotel with a mint on your pillow and hospital corners on the bed, you've come to the wrong place. But if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing space out of time with a few quirks and eccentricities, this is a great spot to unwind and recharge.
The Captain's Quarters are connected to the owner's main house, but they are private, with a screen/glass door for entrance/exit. The space is cozy and clearly lived in, but also brimming with fun furniture and curious nooks and crannies (along with all the usual staples, like a TV and Netflix). Outside is a small wonderland right on the water, complete with reading nooks, grassy lawns, and, yes, goats and chickens! (They never woke us up, so noise is not really a factor.)
Barbara is an attentive hostess and if you ask nicely, she'll give you fresh eggs and show you how she dances with her goats. It's a fun, lively place -- perhaps not for everyone -- but if you've got a creative bone in your body, you'll respond instantly to this homey spot.
Hi Randee - It was great and interesting to meet both of you and to meet Byrdie ( the first guest dog to stay in The Captains Quarters). I never stayed in a 5 star hotel with a mint on the pillow but I will investigate mints for our guests. I love that idea. Fresh eggs and garden flowers are waiting for all guests. If they visit during happy laying season (like now), guests can enjoy extra eggs, if requested, if we have them. I will not soon forget the very lovely image of you 3 sitting by the pool reading a story. Thank you for choosing our eccentric New Englandy Captains Quarters for your get away. I loved your idea of a writers group staying at The Goat Cottage .I'd love a group of artists to stay there some day as well. I hope you have the most amazing time in England! Till the next time - all the best from Barbara
Built-in goats and old-fashioned kindness at this one of a kind, scenic artist's retreat!
From the farm fresh eggs left on the doorstep each morning, to the stories of her locally famous, ship-building father, and the spontaneous tour of her magical garden, owner Barbara was in a constant state of hospitality during our stay. Surrounded by a copse of trees, a friendly family of goats and chickens, and the nearby ocean, it's hard not to breathe easy and feel at home here. If your cup of tea is a down-to-earth, surrounded-by-nature retreat (as opposed to the polish of a modern, city-scape apartment), then by all means make haste for The Goat Cottage and the Captain's Quarters!
Note: Tiverton is a swift and gorgeous drive to the nearby towns of Bristol and Portsmouth, and less than 30 minutes from Newport.
Also note: this place is very kid-friendly (and that includes grown-up kids... ha.)
Dear Thomas - of so many pockets 🎶. It was a joy to have your family stay with us . Next time I hope you stay longer and I get to meet your mom . Send her this way if she wants to paint a goat or two ..... many blessings to you all from The Captains Quarters
The Captains Quarters is a 2 second walk from The Goat Cottage. Both rentals are separate from each other and from us but if a family or group of friends came together its the perfect place for a lot of fun and enough space for everyone to connect and to also have their own space. The Captains Quarters is a two floor apt with a small porch entrance into the kitchen where guests can sit in the sun to have their morning coffee. The down stairs large bedroom living room with TV, work table has a pull out couch for one adult or a couple of kids. Upstairs is a cozy queen and the bath/ shower. There is long list of favorite spots near by to visit in Tiverton, Little Compton, Newport, Providence and Bristol .A few highlights are The Black Goose Cafe - take out too, Red Dory, The Boat House, Little Bear, Coastal Roasters ( best coffee), The Rock Shop, Sakonnet Vineyard, Fog Land beach, Helger's ice cream, Evelyn's Seafood, Newport everything, Water Fire in Providence.
