A fabulous vacation property
We spent two wonderful weeks at Le Sommet. The house is very comfortable and well equipped. It has some upgrades but maintains many original features like stone walls and timber beams. The house has a fabulous upper balcony that overlooks the rooftops of the town below. After spending the day biking, hiking, or exploring neighbouring towns it was a pleasure to sit on the balcony sipping wine and watching the setting sun light up the surrounding hills. Despite some fabulous local restaurants, most nights we stayed in and cooked dinner. The shop in the centre of town is a 5 minute walk and carries most anything you need; fresh baguettes and croissants for breakfast and duck and local vegetables for dinner. Le Sommet provided a quiet and restful environment; the bed was wonderfully comfortable and I haven’t slept as well in ages. We definitely want to come back to your beautiful home and enjoy the experience of life in a small French village.

Lovely Home in a Spectacular Setting
I recommend La Serre completely and without reservation. Paziols provides a true immersion into French country life, and the house offers a fantastic base from which to explore a remarkable part of the world that joins French, Spanish, and Catalan cultures. The apartment (one of three in the house) offers all you need, and the photos on VRBO give an excellent representation of what you'll find. It's fully contained and outfitted, and the owners provide all the information you'll need to take full advantage of your stay. Before this experience, I'd never rented directly from an owner and I was a bit hesitant, but the owners of La Serre made it a positive experience. Don't hesitate to take advantage of all that La Serre and Paziols have to offer.

LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT
This studio is exactly what we, two older women, wanted: a nice place to stay in a small village in the south of France with a garden to eat outside, a village café place to go and be greeted with a "bonjour mesdames" with the accent. We loved it! Well equipped kitchen, super beds, a bottle of wine on the table upon arrival, neighbours that each morning greeted us and a nice housekeeper always there to answer our needs . We loved to buy the saucisson and the boudin noir done by traveling butcher in his truck once a week... I am hoping to go back one day because the village of Paziol is so charming, and the studio was great to come back each night since we did 2000 km all over the area, from Narbonne to Carcassonne to Perpignan in a rented car from Perpignan airport. Mirepoix village was our "coup de coeur" and so was our gastronomic dinner at the Abbaye de Camon between Mirepoix and Paziol. We swam in the river when tired of driving, we walked around the village, we visited the local vignoble in Tuchan and tasted lots of wine and we had wonderful days at the beach nearby. The description is exactly what you get, a warm and comfortable little gem for a few weeks to visit the Languedoc Roussillon, l'Aude and l'Ariège as we did; driving is just so easy, well marked and we never got lost.

About the host

Host profile image
We are Susan Martin and Adrian Hussey, Canadian owners of La Serre. We are retired and live in Owen Sound, Ontario Canada. We spend 3 months a year in our French home. We love to travel, enjoy fine dining, wine tasting and immersing ourselves in the local French culture. We also enjoy trips to Spain which is only an hour away! Adrian explores the region via mountain bike and we both like to hike and swim in the local rivers.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with this part of France as it is stunningly beautiful, off the typical tourist radar and has lots to see and do. It is also a prime grape growing region, home to many small vintners who make really good, reasonably priced wine. The people in our small town of Paziols are very friendly and welcoming. The area is quiet and peaceful. We like to be physically active and there is lots of hiking, cycling, swimming in the local rivers and lovely Mediterranean beaches. It is a great part of the world for bird watching. For excitement, it is only an hour's drive away to Spain, 1 hour to Figureres, 1.5 hours to Girona, 2.5 hours to Barcelona. Toulouse is 2 hours drive, Montpellier 1.5 hours, Narbonne and Carcassone one hour's drive and Perpignan 45 minutes drive. We also love the excellent, award winning local wines and superb restaurants and food!

What makes this property unique

The village of Paziols is a rustic, charming, hillside village which encourages a laid-back lifestyle and boasts plenty of sunshine in which visitors can enjoy the stunning surroundings and cool off in the local swimming hole. The village is well placed for exploring the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, taking a day trip to Spain, hiking, or discovering the fascinating history of the Cathars. Superb local restaurants explore fresh regional cuisine to accompany the region's award-winning wines.
