San Diego County Villa Rental Photos and Description

Fabulous 1 bed, 1 bath - total renovation with backyard grill, ping pong

# 13 on Forbes' list of the 'hippest' neighborhoods in the US, North Park is a vibrant, diverse urban village with a life of its own. Conveniently located near terrific restaurants, cafes and nightlife as well as Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, downtown San Diego and Coronado Island, this location can't be beat.

Our 1926 Spanish villa -- 'Villa Barajas' -- combines historic character with modern features. We restored this place for everyone to enjoy the kind of travel experience we most appreciate ourselves -- authentic local living, in luxury style, with the comforts of home! Serene, comfortable, private and yet so accessible to what's happening in the village!

The Baker's Suite (#3321) is a cozy, compact 1 bed, 1 bath (just under 400 SF), ideal for two, but can accommodate up to 2 adults with 1-2 children using the comfortable full size sofa bed (auto inflating air mattress). Overall, the feel is organic, clean lined, modern and very warm and inviting -- The French baker's table used for dining was made from reclaimed 19th century scaffolding.

Gorgeous original hardwood floors, exposed brick, fine cabinetry and furnishings, deep Euro tub/shower, central heat/AC, washer and dryer in suite, all new fully equipped kitchen and bath.

We also provide amenities to get your trip started the right way -- K-cup and French press coffee makers, beach towels, blow dryer, iron, luggage rack, shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, hand soaps, laundry detergent, paper products. The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware, dishware, utensils, spices...pretty much whatever you'll need. There is free WIFI and smart TV -- Stream Netflix and Pandora while you relax or enjoy a light meal in the suite.

We have a 50mb WIFI network in the unit -- nice and fast -- and 4 other networks in the building, all of which are accessible to all guests, so if your WIFI happens to go down, just tie into any one of the other 4!

Spacious grounds with gas grill, ping pong table and delightful seating areas. There is parking for your car on the property. Parking on surrounding streets also is free and typically available.

Walk just two blocks to terrific restaurants -- Italian, French, Mexican, Asian, Vegetarian, Sushi, Pizza -- as well as cafes, breakfast places, home-baked goods, micro brewery, wine bar. Enjoy "La Perla" gourmet tacos with a short or tall brew under the stars. The ramen/noodle house "Underbelly" hops -- there's communal outdoor seating around firepits that make this a lively social spot day or night. Our guests also love "The Smoking Goat" french bistro. A few blocks more and there's a weekly farmer's market (every Thursday), more wine bars, artisan pizza, Asian fusion, American/Californian, homemade ice cream...too many places to list.

With all this eating and imbibing, you may want to get your fitness fix as well, or tune up your mind/body connection, and North Park has yoga, pilates, dance, boxing, various full service gyms...there's even a pole dancing school, for the daring amongst us.

Then again, you're here to enjoy the outdoors, right?

So walk a few blocks to Balboa Park! -- community pool, tennis, golf, hiking and running trains, bike track, bocce court, picnic area, children's play area. On the farther side of Balboa Park, still walking distance (20-30 minutes) or a short ride, are San Diego Zoo, museums and Old Globe Theater.

Drive 5-9 minutes to downtown destinations or take the bus one block away (about 20 minutes with stops) -- The GasLamp Quarter, Little Italy, Seaport Village, Convention Center, Petco Park. Drive 10 min over the bridge to Coronado Island's beautiful beaches and the famous Hotel Del Coronado -- This is the best spot for a beach day, with a huge stretch of beautiful fine sand beach, a promenade for strolling or peddling along the water, beach chair and cabana cover rentals, peddle car rentals, oceanfront restaurants, lounges, cafes and shops. Or, drive 10-15 minutes to other central San Diego beaches (Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach) and other major attractions, including Seaworld.

We love homes, vacations, people, and customer service. Making people happy in beautiful environments is our 'thing.'

Beth Galdieri purchased this villa in 2012

Why Beth Galdieri chose San Diego County

When we saw this building, with its old world charm and sophistication - we knew that we had to own it, renovate it - and then provide fabulous, beautiful, comfortable and 'cool' accommodations where people could relax, enjoy the Park, the Zoo, the many restaurants- all within the context of a local San

What makes this villa unique

This building is thought to have been owned a century ago by a church nearby and resided in by church members or out of town visitors. It is a beautiful building and stands out as regal yet simple. This combination of simplicity and beauty attracted us.

We love the laid back style of San Diego and this was a nice location to call home while we were exploring. Lots of great restaurants close by. Nice neighbourhood to walk, felt safe. We felt looked after, and would stay here again on our next visit. :)

Property was excellent

  • 5 of 5

We live locally and rented this space while family was in town for 2 of my family members to stay at. The apartment was small and nice - suited our needs great. The furnishing and decorations appeared new and well cared for. And the backyard space with ping pong table was a fun bonus! The location was close to restaurants and parks. The owner and rental coordinator were very easy to work with. We'd definitely rent this space again if the need arises!

Safe, Clean and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful stay for the week. They worked with me despite my last minute need for a rental. The accommodations were just as pictured on the website. I will definitely stay here again whenever I visit San Diego again.

Great property in central location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 3yr old son stayed at this North Park area unit for 4 nights. What an awesome time!! I loved the central location of this property close to everything if you have a car. We visited the San Diego zoo (a few mins away by car), Coronado beach (about a ten to fifteen minute drive), ocean beach and pacific beach, downtown (10 mins by car), and gas light district. Nothing took more that 20 mins to get to. We did stay during the week, so I'm sure additional travel time would be required on the weekends. Each morning we walked to Santos coffee shop which is only 2 blocks away. We also walked and ate The Smoaking Goat one night, good food and good vibes.

The unit is modern and has a peaceful vibe. Everything was very clean. We left the place like we found it, with the exception of some dirty towels and were promptly refunded our deposit. I saw some other reviews with complaints of not getting back the regund, the rental agreement is very clear so just follow those rules and be respectful of this well kept property.

Some recommendations for anyone looking to stay here. Take a good look at the outside picture of the unit if coming in at night. I forgot and the addresses are not easy to see on any of the homes. The streets are full with parked cars and my husband had to get out and walk to find the place. If your driving and have the option of a small car that would be better. We drove our minivan and that was not a good option for San Diego where you have to parallel park everywhere. I can see why there were so many of the little smart cars on the road ;-) Also the minivan wouldn't fit in the garage, so had we traveled during a busier time we would have had more difficulties parking our vehicle. These are not complaints at all, just advice for any other travelers.

We will 100% be staying here on our next visit.

Great unit in a great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

My wife and teenage son stayed at this North Park area unit for 5 nights. We had a great time exploring the San Diego zoo (about 8 minutes away by car) and frequented Coronado beach (about a ten to fifteen minute drive). In addition, we had fun finding new funky coffee shops and restaurants in the North Park area. The unit had modern kitchen and bathroom appliances with beautiful hardwood floors.

Good, but could be better

  • 3 of 5

Overall, this is a nice small place for an individual, couple or three at the most. My wife, 19yr old daughter and I stayed for 4 nights. My summary is below:

Good:

-The modern cabinetry, kitchen and bathroom. Top quality with little expense spared.

-The bed in the bedroom is very comfortable.

-The closet space in the small bedroom is spacious and large enough for your luggage.

-The pull-out bed was also comfortable for my 19yr old daughter.

-Parking was convenient and free

-Many cooking seasonings were included

-Nice to have detergent included with the washing machine

Opportunity for improvement:

-Lack of personal touch. We've stayed in places where there was a kind note to welcome the guest and a welcome basket with a few snacks. There was nothing that added a personal and welcoming touch. It would take a very small investment to have a big impact on welcoming the guest. A simple welcome basket could include something as simple as two coffee packs for the Kuerig machine, a single pack of microwave popcorn and a nice welcome note.

-Owner pushed strong for damage insurance plus a deposit. I get the deposit, but have never seen an insurance charge. I pushed back on the insurance, so my deposit was doubled.

-They charge a significant cleaning fee, but expect you to clean and put away the dishes upon check-out. On the day we checked out, we put the dishes in the dish washer, but did not have time to put them away. We received an email after we checked out reminding us that this was our responsibility (per the rental agreement) and that we could have had funds deducted from our deposit. Although we were not charged, I don't think it should have even been brought up. Why am I paying a cleaning fee if I have to clean and put all the dishes away, especially when many rentals charge less for cleaning and don't require you to clean and put away the dishes upon check out?

-Outdoor grill has aluminum foil just under the grill irons to keep the grill clean. However, the fire never reaches the food, so you do not get the grilled flavor. It's basically the same as baking the food.

-The location is good in terms of proximity to key areas, but the neighborhood is not the greatest.

Overall, the place was small, but very well put together with high end equipment. I'm just most disappointed with not feeling like a valued and welcomed customer. The dish situation really left a bad taste in my mouth!

Owner's Response: We wonder about the "personal touch" and "welcome customer" feeling that were reportedly lacking here. This was a last minute booking -- same day. Owner responded personally, immediately and graciously accommodated on the fly. Gave the guest a significant discount. Granted an early check-in request. Gave restaurant suggestions. Offered an extra night at half price, which guest enthusiastically opted for. (We do this when a single night is 'orphaned' between reservations.) Rental coordinator also sent a welcome email with additional info and made a phone call to touch base and ensure guest had a point of contact for any issues or questions. Guests left a big mess behind -- not respectful of our property, or the care we obviously put into maintaining it --- and we absorbed the additional cleaning charge, even! We've thought about providing a welcome basket -- Would guests rather have coffee and sweets or the eco-friendly amenities we supply, which we think save guests time and money? We supply detergent, soaps, shampoo, paper products, cleaning products, spices that guests may not want to cart with them or might have to leave behind, but perhaps coffee and treats would please more people? It would save us money, as all those supplies cost a small fortune! We'd be interested in feedback on this. There are two cafés, several restaurants and a grocery two blocks from the property -- So we figured, why not check out the immediate neighborhood for a few minutes and get the coffee you like, as you like it? Walking about the area and getting the local experience is one reason people choose vacation rentals. We do all the laundry and clean the units top to bottom and ask just two things of guests -- run the dishwasher (or wash) and put away. Scrape/clean the grill after using so other guests at the villa can enjoy without having to clean first. This guest did neither. Some folks see reviews and ratings as a means to demonstrate power they may feel is lacking in other spheres of their lives or to project upon others their own very impersonal, petty way of being. This is not a hotel, we're just regular people. The vast majority of our guests are wonderful and we enjoy interacting with them. Please read the other reviews. Peace out.

Additional information about rental rates

Refundable damage deposit $250
Check-out Cleaning $100
Property Damage Protection $59
Tax Rate 10.5%

Rates in table are representative and may vary based on number of occupants and specific dates requested. Rates and minimum stays during holidays and special events, such as Comic-Con, are typically higher. San Diego requires that occupancy taxes be charged for stays of fewer than 31 nights (10.5%). Cleaning fee, insurance and refundable security deposit are additional. Rates are subject to change until reservation has been confirmed.

For stays of one month or more, we charge for bi-weekly cleaning, in addition to a final cleaning fee. This will not be auto-generated via a reservation request -- We will need to revise the quote to include the biweekly cleanings.

Many people ask about this: We include a third party damage protection policy in our quotes, which is a nonrefundable fee. The policy protects you and us. With the policy in place, we're able to charge a very low cash security deposit that covers minor damages (such as stained towels or linens or broken plates). The insurance policy covers more significant accidental damages (for example, to furniture, floors, appliances, counters, walls, mirrors, plumbing fixtures, lamps, window glass and coverings, other elements). The insurance also enables you to recover your security deposit in the event of a qualified incident. VRBO offers you the option of either purchasing the insurance policy we've quoted or paying an additional refundable security deposit equal to the coverage/face value of the policy. For example, suppose we are charging $250 refundable security and you opt NOT to purchase the insurance (which in this example has a coverage value of $1,500) -- Your new combined REFUNDABLE security deposit would be $250 + $1500 = $1,750. Please note the price of the insurance policy and coverage amount are subject to change.
